Ordering my 25L Explore v2 now... sooo excited to have it for an upcoming trip! Also my first non-black bag... lol. Amazing dedication to design and making useful products. Love the videos!
Just wanted to say I watched a ton of videos looking for a bag and this video sold me. I have never seen a designer take so much time to elaborate on all of the little decisions that add up to a great experience. I just received my 25L green and it is a great looking and more importantly great feeling bag to wear. Kudos to you and your team!
Appreciate all the thoughts behind the Shimoda backpacks and improvements in the design based on customer feedback, making them stand out from the other brands. The spirit deserves every entrepreneur to learn from.
My seemingly never-ending search for the perfect camera backpack came to an abrupt end exactly 2 weeks ago when the Amazon delivery person dropped off my new v2 black 25L at my doorstep. This fine piece of gear is absolutely incredible in every aspect. It even stands up on its own and doesn’t have that camera-gear backpack look to it it - minor details that most bags fail to incorporate. It’s a very classy (but definitely rugged) design that is completely appropriate for the mountains or an urban environment. The bag is not cheap but if you appreciate fine quality you will forget all about the cost. I see myself using this bag for years to come. Ian, you guys hit a grand slam with this bag. Thank you!
Watched your video, and a few others, and placed an order with you. Watched a few more videos and now wish I had it overnighted. Very excited to to travel to Switzerland. I ordered the 35 and I am a dual Canon 5dm3 traveler.
What?? The most important feature of this bag is how comfortable it is!!!!! I love my PD bag but i salute to whoever can wear it for more than 2 hours. Its the worst bag for travelling..... This. On the other hand. I can stuff whatever i want onto it and it doesnt hurt. Love it. Thank you for your attention to details.!!!
I started to check Shimoda's bag first. And I become to recognize how well this bag had designed. But I become to realize that I was fascinated not only by the bag but by Ian himself!
This bag is really well thought out. Might be my next travel bag. Please consider these changes in the next version: 1) The compression straps should be removable just like the accessory straps, with G hooks. Then if I'm not using the compression straps, they don't dangle. 2) The side bottle pouches would be neater if they were just bigger versions of the shoulder strap bottle pocket design. A straight zipper that reveal an elastic expandable pouch. 3) Would rather the rain cover be sold separately with more color options like a matching green/black 4) Bigger rear access opening so I can fit a 16" laptop in the 25L bag. I would sacrifice the 3-size adjustable straps feature for a larger rear opening. Or just have the rear zipper go around the straps. The straps could be held under 2 flaps like the peak design travel bag, keeping the straps out of the way when not in use. 5) More transparent mesh material. It's still too hard to see inside the mesh pockets. 6) Add a tablet sleeve on the laptop sleeve 7) Would love if the removable belt could be used as an expandable waist/sling bag like the pakt backpack has. Adding the top loader is cool, but would be nice to have a smaller built-in option. 8) Need 3 pen pockets for a pen, pencil, stylus I think this would be a solid V3 and would solve my main gripes with the current design. Of couse, you can't please everybody, but maybe some of these are common wishes. This is still probably the most well thought out travel/camera bag out there. Nice job!
3) I disagree, I got a Wandrd Prvke which no longer includes the rain cover and they confidently pour a bucket of water on top of it. But it let a lot of moisture in when I first used it in moderate rain. So a rain cover is a must IMO especially at this price point. The Wandrd Prvke got sent back. I think a better option would be to include the basic rain cover, but also sell different colours separately that include a reflective side like the Tenba covers. The Tenba covers have a rain side and a reflective side for sunny conditions so the bag doesn't get super hot, making it worth it for those in drier/sunny climates.
Congratulations on the launch, you've done a sterling job of communicating which has helped me in deciding not only to back the bag, but also in which is best suited to my needs. The green and brown pallete is fetching, reminiscent of Barbour's iconic jackets, which employ waterproof fabrics in shades of greens with shades of brown leather, one alteration i would consider in a V3 is switching to brass coloured zippers to complement the brown leather in both green and black bags, which would really set the outdoor/urban chic look off, and further differentiate with the X series.
Hi Tristan, thanks for the feedback and kind compliments. I'm personally not sold on the brass idea, it might be a bit to flashy for my liking but will keep my eye open for examples of it in the future. I've always been pretty set in my zipper ways and finish colors :) Possibly for a pack more committed to urban and less mountain might work. I haven't thought of a Barbour jacket in the same light, but now that you mention it, the oiled canvas is reminiscent of the our resin coated nylon (if that's the coat you mean).
@@ShimodaDesigns Nae, thank ye for the bag, it's uncannily perfect fer me and will get plenty of use in the Scottish, Highlands when i can travel home again. hello, fantastic review, definately decided to buy Shimoda Explorer V2. seen the x35 and way to big for me, so going for the x30 version. I'm not sure whether medium or large Mirrorless insert is best suited to the x30. Camera is a Leica SL2 + Vario zoom and spare lens, plus filters. Large version means more camera container but less extra storage for non photo. any advice welcome.
What a great bag, Ian! I hope the base handle (REALLY missing this on my X50) and the Aired-Out Harness also comes to the X series v2! Would be sold in a second. :)
Thanks! As for Action X, the Base Handle will likely make it over but the harness on Action X is specifically a more durable construction to deal with mountain and sports tools.
@@ShimodaDesigns BTW: Do you plan to release a more compact version of the Toploader für APS-C cameras? I'd love to get one but I figured the current one is way too big (especially in depth) for my a6400 with a Tamron 17-70 mounted). Would be perfect!
I just bought the V2 25 and this video has really helped me get familiar with all the features. The one thing I don’t really understand is the use of the dividers in the main compartment. Why does one end of the large divider not have Velcro? I have tried numerous configurations to make it work with my Fuji X-H1 and a couple of lenses, and nothing works very well. I love the bag, but I am struggling with configuration.
Hi, the velcro-less end is for a horizontal divider layout and using side access. You would place that end at the side-access door - where you don't want velcro. Ofcourse not all set-ups work with all core units - but your welcome to email more specific gear details to ian@shimodadesigns.com
Thanks Ian. I LOOOOVE my 25litre. Yes, the handles at either end!, wow, who'd ever think those would be of such benefit. The 25L is hands down the best everyday carry bag for me as it includes on a daily basis: my camera w/ lenses, my 13" MB Air, my iPad Mini 6, clothes, water, etc. I have 2 of the Action Xs, but this bag is daily use, goes EVERYWHERE!!! Incredible bag........
Thanks Todd, I had the same feelings when I put on the base handle, such a simple and affordable addition, but is one of the most used features (for me at least). Appreciate the comment - Ian

Hi Ian. On the Kickstarter it shows an internal frame of sorts on the ICUs. Do the bags have an aluminum frame to help move the weight to the hips in conjunction with the hip belt? Is it in all 3 sizes?
I use a few different ones, but the soft one with straw is HydraFlask, the Yellowish Green one is a Nalgene and the Black one is Camel Back Podium - which might be favorite but they are all good fits.
@@PeteD If you/I need more than 500-750ml, that is my preferred way to go. It's very ideal to have water available without breaking stride, that you can top off when needed from a bigger bottle in the pack. The one advantage this has over a bladder is that any weight on front of the shoulder straps (like the water) becomes free weight as the pack out weighs it and somewhat holds it for you.
I can't say for sure, there are too many seats to check but it fits in some. My guess would be yes but any issues will be with the agents not the actual seat.
@@ShimodaDesigns that's my thought as well...making it tough to decide between the 25 & 30, but I feel like the 30 should be fine the majority of the time. As long as it fits width wise, i feel like the extra couple inches of length shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the response!
@@briansteph I've had the 30 under the seat before, but some seats have different assembly. Maybe this will help give you an idea of what you can expect: ruclips.net/video/aD6xePR7yMc/видео.html
@@ShimodaDesigns Yes this is super helpful, thanks so much! It seems that the Explore v2 30L and this X30 are almost the same size. I feel that the vast majority of flight attendants would not put up a fuss about how much the backpack is sticking out. Final question: is the only difference between backpack-only and the starter kits the core unit insert being included? I am thinking I may pair the v2 30L with the small mirrorless rather than the medium if that's the only difference. Thanks again for the responses!
Oh ! Saw the details of this bag apparently too late for the Kickstarter campaign, after coming back from vacation with my X50. Is there any way to sneek in a pledge for a Explore v2 green (or black for the matter) 30 L ?
Hey I missed the campaign and was told it would be available this month, is that still a possibility? I didn’t see anything on the site. I have a trip the middle of November and I would love to have this bag for it
Hi you will have to check the measurements of your camera and compare them the dimension of the actual Core Unit. Dims are posted on the bottom of this page: www.kickstarter.com/projects/shimodadesigns/shimoda-explore-v2
Yes for sure, I think we could market this as just a 'travel bag' and it would do just fine. The rear access really makes very ideal for access and safety.
@@ShimodaDesigns I like the harness system & the appearance of the bag. I'm not a photographer. I want to use it as a One Bag Carry on only Travel Bag. My only concern is the back access opens only 3/4. It may be difficult to put in and get packing cubes out of the bag. And the weight is 2 kg, budget airlines carry on limit is 7kg. The One Bag Travel market is bigger than the Photographers market. It would be great if you can design a bag for the main purpose is One Bag Travel. I would be looking forward to that. Thanks Ian.
I'm wondering about weight capacity and comfort. Which of the three, or would all three handle 30 lbs of gear comfortably? Even for a day hike. If I put in my full kit with big glass, plus some water and accessories, I'd be at 30 lbs easy.
Technically you can load over 150lbs in the bags - that is when the strap seams will start to actually break... at least from the mechanical tests we have done. I do not give actual recommended weights because it's more mindful of the users physical conditioning and strength. 20-30 pounds of gear should be OK for any of our packs. Consider that the bigger the bag is, the bigger the area the weight is spread over. So if we put 20lbs in the E20 and 20lbs in the X70... the X70 will be a much nicer carry because the weights are more spread out and not in a smaller area. I may be a bit biased but others seem to agree, our weight distribution is really good. IMO it's better or different due to our unique harness / strap shape. The shape also distributes weight across the chest.
@@ShimodaDesigns thanks for that thorough answer. My question i guess is aimed at the support system (straps). Some large capacity packs have puny or thin shoulder and hip straps. Yes, you can load up those packs but by end of day you are miserable. I just wanted to be sure the pack is comfortable carrying the actual weight you could put in it. I've committed to the E30.
The one thing that I have my doubts about in this backpack, is the back-panel. How well does it ventilate? what's the material behind the outer stretch layer -- how hard is it and how is it shaped to keep it airing? Is it something similar to the central section of this pack: www.decathlon.co.uk/p/women-s-travel-trekking-50-l-backpack-travel-500-blue/_/R-p-167471?mc=8383138&c=TURQUOISE_BLUE See the rigid material behind the netting, which is comfortable yet seems to allow breathing relatively well. Or is it a more homogenous soft padding?
12:47 answers your questions, with regards to decathlon, I've never handled their bags, but ours is padded air-mesh over high-density EVA. Buy the looks or theirs it mesh over some kind of foam.
@@ShimodaDesigns Thanks for the answer; I did listen to that but didn't pick up on all the detail. I'd like to see perhaps a more close-up photo of what it looks like? The Decathlon pack has a kind of ridged / spiked material, not perforated. It seems to provide a decent amount of air circulation.
@@TimvanderLeeuw Sorry we don't have images of the internal composition other than what you see of the exterior. If you are uncertain at this time, I suggest waiting until you see one in person or until more reviews from customers are online.
@@TimvanderLeeuw Sorry, I'm not sure what else I can provide. The images on the video or campaign page show most of what you will see in person. We are not able to photograph the inside of the construction. Also the decathlon pack is perforated... that's what the hole pattern is. I've never used a dec pack so I'm not qualified comment on their performance.
@@ShimodaDesigns I don't think I was asking for a shot of the inside of the construction! 😃 But perhaps a more close up photo. Anyway I think that the info I now have is good enough for me for the time being, thanks for your reply! I understand that you can't compare performance of two different constructions if you haven't used one of them. I wouldn't be able to compare either!
You almost made perfect bag... What I wish: 1) Regular shoulder straps ( like F-stop Loka UL ) This Shimoda straps are ridiculous (from 1990's ) >>> maybe Shimoda Women's Simple Straps make more sense 2) Colors are nice but it will be great if you offer also Blue Night/Sea Pine like your other bags 3) "Carry on friendly" / not really > 35 l bag is 2kg ( 2.5 kg with core unit ) Many airlines has 7kg limit and some of them are very strict ____ Filter Pocket - are you really gonna risk to put there your $200 CPL filter without plastic case ? ( I guess many people will learn expensive lesson ) As F-stop Loka 37 UL user I really like this Shimoda V2 - 30l is still not too heavy and good size. If you add good looking straps and mentioned colors it could be huge hit ( I know this kind of straps works for some but they should be optional ) Great review and really nice step forward in Photography Backpack design - I may get one for myself
Hi thanks for sharing your opinion. There never will be a 'perfect bag' as we clearly can't make everyone happy. The Explore v2 fits Carry On regulations. Many airlines also have height restrictions shorter than the UL. As for the Filter pocket, your exact comments are covered in the video - where I recommend using plastic cases, but also identify the positives in both. Simple Straps are also available and work for men too (just like the stock ones also work for women). -You'll have to explain your 1990's comment - that one is way my over my head. I designed the Loka over 10 years ago :) to my knowledge it has not changed since. But it is a very different pack with different design goals, reasons for existing and does not sit in the category or have the same end user in mind. I think that if you tried one of our packs, you might find adventure camera bags have progressed a lot in the last 10 years. Lots of good ideas making mountain photography more enjoyable. Hope to see you one of packs one day. Thanks for commenting. Ian
@@ShimodaDesigns What I mean with 1990 design is they look like old style photography jackets with milion pockets F-stop Kashmir 30l is only 52 cm and 1.1 kg so very good as carry on ( I guess designed by you as well ?) I like this design about 95% and really like many futures, including all extra pockets I may end up begin a new Shimoda customer and see myself getting 30 l with simple straps Thank You for your reply and keep your great work
@@pkmexplorers Please understand, you're comparing two packs designed for different tasks. Kashmir is a women's pack (also not the bag you quoted). It's also a minimalist UL bag. Explore was never designed to be as UL minimalist pack. If you want a lighter weight Shimoda bag - you can try the Explore 30 v1 - it weighs 1.6kg. Shimoda bags have more weight than a Kashmir simply because they have A LOT more features our community of photographers has specifically requested. While I am not knocking the Kashmir, it's essentially a shell, sized to fit a camera insert. Literally the 90% of the items this video is about --- the Kashmir does not have. If you do buy a Shimoda bag, please understand you're not buying a minimalist ultralight pack and your expectations will hopefully reflect that. :)
@@ShimodaDesigns I know difference between F-stop Loka and Kashmir vs Shimoda.... Thats the reason I want Shimoda V2 - because this bag looks to me like perfect design ...all futures must comes with weight compromises, and I am aware of that. It's very ideal to have water available without breaking stride, that you can top off when needed from a bigger bottle in the pack. The one advantage this has over a bladder is that any weight on front of the shoulder straps (like the water) becomes free weight as the pack out weighs it and somewhat holds it for you.
Great video! Will the 30L fit under most airplane seats? Asking as this would be my personal item, with a carry-on suitcase being my overhead bag.
@@briansteph correct - Starter Kit includes the backpack. The Backpack only is without. It will say what's included under Overview.
Oh ! Saw the details of this bag apparently too late for the Kickstarter campaign, after coming back from vacation with my X50. Is there any way to sneek in a pledge for a Explore v2 green (or black for the matter) 30 L ?
Sorry no :) you'll have to wait until October.
Do you guys have a bag which has camera compartments and a space for chucking in a fleece, and other items you might carry on a trail?
All of our backpacks are designed for extras.
Hey I missed the campaign and was told it would be available this month, is that still a possibility? I didn’t see anything on the site. I have a trip the middle of November and I would love to have this bag for it
October 4th is the global launch date, so you should see it start surfacing online very soon.
@@ShimodaDesigns perfect. Thanks a lot.
Well done thanks!
Will the Explore V2 fit either a Canon C70 or Sony Fx6? (The FX6 and C70 minus the top handle and lens)
Hi you will have to check the measurements of your camera and compare them the dimension of the actual Core Unit. Dims are posted on the bottom of this page: www.kickstarter.com/projects/shimodadesigns/shimoda-explore-v2
Your T-shirt is awesome, is it available to purchase?
Hi, they are available here: shimoda-designs.creator-spring.com/? Thank you!
the bag is really good, checks all the boxes. Wish it was little more affordable.
I wish everything was more affordable :)
I really like the look of this bag but the bright blue interior is holding me back. Will any future bags have a different color interior?
I pledged for the 35 litre bag. If it's as good as your presentation skills, then I'm sure it will be worth the wait :)
Thank you! Appriciate both comment and pledge!
That is a pretty bag
are the zippers watertight?
Can u use it as a Travel bag ? Or is it difficult to stuff clothes in there?
Thanks Ian.
Thanks Ian for this video. Is your manufacturing location in China or Japan?
Pretty sure it's China
Pretty sure it's Japan
@@CrazyPr0ducti0ns China
Confirmed it is in Tanzhou, China.
Is there a place for trekking poles?
Either side or the front panel. All you need is the compression/accessory straps to secure them.
Does the smallest fit a mavic 3 pro?
The 25L will fit it in the Core Unit.
The one thing that I have my doubts about in this backpack, is the back-panel. How well does it ventilate? what's the material behind the outer stretch layer -- how hard is it and how is it shaped to keep it airing?
Is it something similar to the central section of this pack:
www.decathlon.co.uk/p/women-s-travel-trekking-50-l-backpack-travel-500-blue/_/R-p-167471?mc=8383138&c=TURQUOISE_BLUE
See the rigid material behind the netting, which is comfortable yet seems to allow breathing relatively well.
Will the 35 get onboard an eu plane?
You're best to ask your airline and seating class - they are not all the same. But the first point in the video covers this... 0:31
You almost made perfect bag... What I wish:
1) Regular shoulder straps ( like F-stop Loka UL ) This Shimoda straps are ridiculous (from 1990's ) >>> maybe Shimoda Women's Simple Straps make more sense
2) Colors are nice but it will be great if you offer also Blue Night/Sea Pine like your other bags
3) "Carry on friendly" / not really > 35 l bag is 2kg ( 2.5 kg with core unit ) Many airlines has 7kg limit and some of them are very strict
____
Filter Pocket - are you really gonna risk to put there your $200 CPL filter without plastic case ? ( I guess many people will learn expensive lesson )
As F-stop Loka 37 UL user I really like this Shimoda V2 - 30l is still not too heavy and good size. If you add good looking straps and mentioned colors it could be huge hit ( I know this kind of straps works for some but they should be optional )
Great review and really nice step forward in Photography Backpack design - I may get one for myself

@@ShimodaDesigns What I mean with 1990 design is they look like old style photography jackets with milion pockets
F-stop Kashmir 30l is only 52 cm and 1.1 kg so very good as carry on ( I guess designed by you as well ?) I think Shimoda v2 are heavy because overcomplicated straps and many extra pockets
Don't get me wrong. I like this design about 95% and really like many futures, including all extra pockets
I may end up begin a new Shimoda customer and see myself getting 30 l with simple straps
Thank You for your reply and keep your great work
@@pkmexplorers Please understand, you're comparing two packs designed for different tasks.
Lack om many important futures in F-stop makes me keep looking for better option, and it looks like I found one Explore V2 30l )
