Regardless of Mr. Joel's ups and downs , and who of us hasn't has had them, he is one of the finest songwriters ever , not just in his generation ...BUT EVER! I have studied his work from the beginning. His very delicate motif based melodies and his uncanny administration of harmony are just very hard to beat. I think where he really shines is simply knowing exactly how a song idea should be developed. He delivers satisfaction every time. This song is no exception. He obviously wanted to do a classic ballad in the style of Frank Sinatra, man he delivered beautifully. Thank you so much Billy for all .
Jake Jds absolutely agree mate him and his old friend James (Jimmy/Jim) STars of the State of York city that never sleeps Billy day and James night opposite yes exactly the same musical soul and spirit putting the greight O in the state!
I fell in love with Billy Joel around '85, when I was 7 or 8. Now my 7-year-old daughter is obsessed with his music just like I was. As I was watching this, she came up to me and said, "Is that Billy Joel's dad?". Though she knows his newer stuff, she'd only seen video of him from his younger days. She couldn't believe that she'd been listening to 30 years of music from him. Now we're going through all these videos and having an awesome time. Thanks JoelFan. :)
I think at a certain age we all get to this point of reflection. Life looks so different from our youthful point of view and when you arrive at a more mature spot and look back, mostly nothing went as planned. But if you like where you are in this moment, then you couldn't have changed anything because it is those experiences that brought to this point. Own your past, but live on, smarter, kinder, and hopeful.
Billy Joel is a genius of 20th Century music. When he stopped writing pop songs, he was spent, done, bored, over, whatever. This song sounds like a Frank Sinatra leftover. If that's what Billy had left in him - and remember, I love him and I think he is an artist whose music will be heard 1000 years from now - I can understand why he stopped writing new songs.
He stopped writing music for other people and kept writing for himself. He just never releases or records any of that stuff. He also felt that he could never be as good as he wanted to be. Yesterday he announced his first new single since this song came out in 2007. Its called Turn The Lights Back On and it comes out on Feb first
He finally did it. An amazing new song February 1, 2024. It took about 20 years but he finally wrote an all new song that is a traditional song going back to his Piano Man days - Turn the Lights Back On. It sounds like his 1980s all over again and not like Sinatra which this was.
I feel that in this song, Billy Joel showcases the fact the his musical talent has aged well. Casual listeners may question why Joel isn't hitting power notes in this song like he used to with his older stuff, but the reason is because this song (and the way it is sung) reflects his life and age now, all with a comforting maturity. Current Billy is just as good as Billy from twenty years ago!
+Cris Matheson Absolutely. This reminds me of some of his simpler, pre Top 40 classic heart-felt songwriting, which is why I became a Billy Joel fan long ago. Songs like this, She's got A Way, You're My Home. He is a terrific balladeer.
oh poor Billy Joel he has had such a hard life and yet he were able to make such inspirational music for the rest of us. Why does fate like to conspire against such people just so others can learn from them, it seems almost unfair.
Ain't no greater fan of Mr. Joel than myself. However, regarding this tune, WAY below his usual gems, though I do think his voice sounds just beautiful. I'd love to hear Billy do an album of old standards. Rod Stewart did, with NO voice at all, and it sold bigtime. Betcha Billy would sell a boatload. Imagine Joel singing "Fly Me To the Moon". Anyway, he's still one helluva music man.
What a beautiful love ballad. First time I've heard it and really enjoyed it too. Billy ought to write more like this. It's in the good old Sinatra tradition.
I love Billy Joel and such a great artist and music composer..This is One of his many from Great songs that I really Love So Much, it tells a story of His Life, His Love , His Pain and His Happiness. It tells you that we're just human that we all made mistake and we learned from those mistakes, and here He somewhat relay thru his music in admitting those and turned it around and found the Love that Makes Him truly happy. Thanks for the sharing this nice music video :)
Billy is an absolute genius. Yes, his range has depleted, but wouldn't yours at age sixty? Just because his range has dropped it doesn't mean he's a bad singer, nor that he can't sing, he just can't hit the notes as he used to. Either way, I respect Billy because he left recording on his own terms. He said he was done and he meant it, don't push for another album because it wont happen, just be grateful of the fact he gave us 30 years of timeless masterpieces.
I love that Billy is trying to write new rock music. I would never dislike a Billy Joel song on youtube, and this is no exception, but this song is really not my cup of tea.
Billy Joel and third wife Katie Lee split. This was the Piano Man's third marriage, her first. The 60-year-old Joel is one of pop's most successful singer-songwriters; Katie Lee Joel hosted the first season of Bravo TV's "Top Chef." He recorded the song "All My Life" as an anniversary gift to his 27-year-old wife two years ago.
Such an odd path, to write 300 songs from when you are 20 to 44, and then just stop writing. He said he did so in order to pursue a Classical music career, and then released exactly one little album of etudes 8 years later, and that was it. One would think that just accidentally he would come up with song ideas every once in a while. People retire from construction jobs. They rarely retire from being a genius.
He may be composing the kind of classical pieces that he said he wanted to pursue without sharing them with the public. That's okay with me if it's what he wants to do. I saw him in concert a month ago and loved hearing all "the old shit" as he called it. He sounded great and really connected with the audience.
@@ThisWholeWorld100 yes. He has been very open about being extremely prolific during those years. There’s so much stuff still in the vault that we haven’t heard yet. Just so weird that he decided to stop and stopped writing entirely. He said recently that “all my life“ is the only song he’s written since 1993. I don’t know how a songwriter does that. I started writing songs when I was 14 years old when I joined my first punk band. I’m 41 and I still write at least one song a week during dry spells and sometimes all right five or six just depends on how inspired I am and what’s going on in the world and what I have to say. I’ve tried to stop and I can’t. So I don’t understand how someone is brilliant is Billy can just turn it off and walk away from it. Because the best song I’ve ever written in my life is not even remotely as good as the worst song he could write. the man is goals
Either Billy was listening to Tony Bennett ALOT, or he was taking lessons from Tony. anyway, wowee OMG! SPECTACULARAMA!!!!! I believe the doctor says Billy has a bad case of Cole Porteritis. MAY THERE BE PEACE All Over GODS Good Earth!
Ay, yi, yi... as they say in Jewish... Two words... Liberty Devitto... He's a humble guy (Lib) and a great guy to talk to online. Not to mention the best drummer. Yup, better than Bonham. Go ahead, give me flack! Snack Pharm!
I think it's too much Sinatra, not enough Billy Joel. Maybe if he had done it with just him and a piano? I'm a huge Billy Joel fan. This video makes me cringe a little.
how did he have a hard life? yeah it was hard to start his career, but his love life was his own fault, its not like fate said, here im going to give you love then dissolve it , his suicide was also his own fault, i love billy joel and his music, but as for feeling sorry for him, the only thing i can say is it is sad people don't love his style as much as they should, but that is about it
Dang. I thought he was getting on in years back in 2007, and now his new song is out in 2024, and he sounds as good as ever!
Who possibly could hate Billy Joel and why? His music is amazing and he looks like a fair man.
I was thinkin' more like Tony Bennettish.
Well done, Mr. Joel... You still got it.
Welcome to the wide world of Billy Joel!
Regardless of Mr. Joel's ups and downs , and who of us hasn't has had them, he is one of the finest songwriters ever , not just in his generation ...BUT EVER!

I strongly agree with you.

How is your daughter doing now? Still a Joel-fan as she was 8 years ago? ^_^

So grateful to the Sirius Channel - I heard this for the first time just the other day. Such a beautiful song.
Those last three notes :D
no words, he said it all.. Billy is definetively a poet, i love you Billy Joel
Shows that he' still got it. For Some reason, many people hate this song because it's a jazz song.
Whether you like the style of this song or not the words are very open and confessional. Still the greatest songwriter ever

I thought I heard every Billy song until I got his new keyboard book and saw this gem. 🥰
LEGEND!!!!
Excellent song, excellent singer. Congratulations, Billy is one of the best singers in the world.
(From France).
I heard this for the first time, last week... Thanks Billy great song... you remind me of Sinatra.
Si è cimentato in ogni tipo di musica compresa quella classica e sempre a livelli eccelsi ... Piano Man forever
Anothet masterpiece from Billy
+Cris Matheson Absolutely. This reminds me of some of his simpler, pre Top 40 classic heart-felt songwriting, which is why I became a Billy Joel fan long ago. Songs like this, She's got A Way, You're My Home. He is a terrific balladeer.
I could sooo see Sinatra singing this

It is all his style and he keeps his voice in real good shape!... nice song and lyrics
I LOVE BILLY JOEL !!!!!!!
Let Billy do what he does best...play the piano and sing. He may have taken a long break, but he is still a wonderful performer.
What a beautiful love ballad. First time I've heard it and really enjoyed it too. Billy ought to write more like this. It's in the good old Sinatra tradition.
Sicuramente tra i piu grandi di ogni tempo, e forse nel suo genere il migliore.
This is a beautiful song
come si puo discutere un artista cosi grande??
Very nice.... thanks.....

Thank you so much for uploading!
Why wont he write more music like this! Please billy!
Wonderful song... Great vocals too :)

this is sooo cool and proves what a talent Billy is. Now go and listen to the FooFighters do it
very nice
Billy Joel if anything I LOVE YOU!
FRANKly great!
Billy Joel is just a pure talent but I sure miss Liberty on the drums.
Very very talented man. It's sad what he's been through in his life. Read his bio
I love that Billy is trying to write new rock music. I would never dislike a Billy Joel song on youtube, and this is no exception, but this song is really not my cup of tea.
good heart medicine.

27 years old vs 60 years old... ahhh the beauty of having money...
Welcome abord the Billy joel fan club
Turn the lights on is the sequel to this song
so sad, he wrote this for Katie and now she dumped him.....
I love your fid
You and everybody else are most welcome!
@mafiaosobob
he's 61, born May 9th 1949 :)
A cold war kid in McCarthy time...
He needs to record an album of jazz stuff. I don't care if he writes the songs or not.
Billy Joel should covert to cutting albums that are Sinatra-esque or Leonard Cohen-esque.
Billy Joel still has a great singing voice. However, if he chooses to make another album, he should sing songs in a baritone/base format.
Ok....go back to Christie already!!! Pleaaaase!!!
When they were together the world was a much better place! :D
Your the one that sucks for saying that. Billy Joel is a great singer and this is a great song. I think he should still sing.
The idea was Tony Bennett
he ain't Bennett, even ancient Bennett
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. I also abandoned songwriting after having composed several hundred.
@Japan01GK That was my first thought as soon as he sang the first word.
Oozes cool.
@Runaable No. Billy has his own unique sound.
@Japan01GK I agree, this sounds really like a Frank Sinatra song :)
ironic he writes this gorgeous love song for his new wife, then they split up shortly after
@jacjr6193 We can only hope. Real songs and not just the instrumental stuff he's revealed he's written.
how old is Billy joel?

Olicity feels for real.😭😭😭😭
Or, you know, the fact that he is Billy fucking Joel.

He's a humble guy (Lib) and a great guy to talk to online. Not to mention the best drummer. Yup, better than Bonham. Go ahead, give me flack!
Snack Pharm!
We all know he hasn't been sitting on his ass the last 10 years. He probably has written enough songs in that time to make at least two more albums.
I can see why he hasn't released anything since 1993.
I think it's too much Sinatra, not enough Billy Joel. Maybe if he had done it with just him and a piano? I'm a huge Billy Joel fan. This video makes me cringe a little.
I really do like this song. But this is basically the only thing he had left to write a song about. His life.
@Tolstoy111 It comes with age. You say it as if it's a bad thing and as if he can't sing anymore.
how did he have a hard life? yeah it was hard to start his career, but his love life was his own fault, its not like fate said, here im going to give you love then dissolve it , his suicide was also his own fault, i love billy joel and his music, but as for feeling sorry for him, the only thing i can say is it is sad people don't love his style as much as they should, but that is about it
i am only a little disapointed that he is not playing the piano, but otherwise it is great
This would sound great speeding it up like Moving Out. Try it Billy and it would be a #1 hit. Slow . . . Meh!
He's done...
I am a Billy Joel fan and I wish Sinatra was singing this. He sounds like crap. Sorry.
A bit egoic on your part, you don't like it so he should retire. LOL!
He's turned into Tim Healy! Not one of his finer moments IMHO
The best
