    This was from 1973, Houses of the Holy, my favorite Zep album. Its their most diverse and eclectic album, from the stunning string arrangements of The Rain Song, to exploring hints of the Island sounds of D'yer Maker, hints of jazz fusion in No Quarter. The Crunge was just another example of daring to explore some crazy funk/soul groove with Robert Plant rapping nonsense until the jam is trapped without the turnaround and he is literally pleading with the band for 'The bridge '!!! They must have been falling over themselves laughing after this jam. Funk , soul, and reggae had not yet reached the white mainstream rock
    genre, so this was all fairly shocking for a hard rock band, Lol!!
    The Stones didn't delve into the Jamaican influence until 1978, and we didn't start hearing funk influences from Pink Floyd until 1979. Zeppelin were always like pirates, pillaging every treasure trove that was linked to rock n roll roots. I love them for tributing other genres and even stealing bits from everywhere because no other group was confident enough to pull it off. (except maybe YES, lol!)

  • @henriettaskolnick4445

    As others have mentioned, this song is James Brown inspired with a little bit of Otis Redding thrown in for good measure ("Ain't gonna call me 'Mr. Pitiful'" from Redding's song, Mr. Pitiful). James Brown would often tell his band to "take it to the bridge" meaning the bridge of the song, but the funny part here is - this song doesn't *have* a bridge. This song started out as a jam session and wasn't meant to be a serious song, just something they were having fun with. At one point, Jimmy thought it a great idea to create a fake dance to go with the song and wanted someone to print up a sheet of dance steps that could be included with each album but it was decided that would take too long to do so they scrapped the idea.

    @bryanhale5254 2 года назад +1

    Okay my man check it out that was a homage to the hardest working man in Show Business The Godfather of Soul himself James Brown of course but the thing is yeah I mean your grandparents probably listen to this guy but you know he's Timeless James Brown it is the ultimate anyhow that was something that he used to say all the time you know there was this one song I think it was sex machine and he kept saying okay take me to the bridge are you going to take me to the bridge and now somebody see yeah I will take you to the bridge you going to take me to the bridge I'll hum yeah I'm going to take you to the bridge and so yeah it would be a part of the song where there's just an instrumental part and that's called The Bridge it's a musical term you know you have your chorus and you have all that kind of stuff but you know the verse that' sort of thing you're at James Brown had the tightest band ever back in the day then you should see him when he does those splits man wow you know I'm just a white Suburban punk from the South Bay Area in Southern California but you know when I was 5 years old when Papa's Got a Brand New Bag came on the radio I was all over that that was one of my faves now as far as this song right here the crunge I was in this group and I played the drums and I did the singing so I had to do both the drums and sing this at the same time and the vocals are like syncopated either off the beat from the drum or whatever so it's like oh my God talk about rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time so you had to really multitask. SON ! All right superdude I'll check you on the next gig
