Open Frame Pendant: A Silversmithing Tutorial
HTML-код

- This video tutorial shows how to fabricate a modern partially framed pendant featuring a bezel set stone. This is a relatively easy project that most with some soldering experience should be capable of. The materials needed are 14 gauge sterling square wire, 26 gauge sterling sheet, 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip, and some scrap silver to make balls. I used an abstract shaped crazy lace agate, but many different stones would look beautiful in this configuration. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Love the design. Thanks for the tip on thinning the sharp bezel corners.I never heard that before.
You’re welcome Bruce!
Just beautiful! You are very talented, both as an artist and instructor. Thank you for sharing this tutorial.
Thanks Julie! What a nice thing to say:). Thanks for the nice comment!
Very cool piece. And I love the jazz.
Thank you Cynthia!
Ya know, when you put that first border around the top-right that made you a designer. And when you added the smaller one on the left, that makes you an artiste. 💋💋💋Nice design!!! 😊
Thanks!
excellent!!!!!!! many thanks once again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re welcome David! Glad it was useful for you. Thank you for the nice feedback:)
That's excellent 👌👌👌👌. But I was hoping to see it spin slowly showing the back. I wish I was near you to go to class!
Sorry about that.
Nice design I, never thought of using ball to join things. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Pat!
Hi I watched one of your video’s a while ago in which you used a soft white soldering block that you pushed prongs into to solder. What is the name of that block please. I want to order one. Thanks
@@patredden4557 Hi Pat. It is called a magnesia block. Most jewelry supply companies carry them. Strangely, Rio Grande, where I get most things does not. I’m not sure why:). Hope this helps
@@chadssilversmithing I saw it on Gesswin Canada a while ago but when I went to order it I couldn’t remember the name. Thanks for your help.
If you are looking for ideas I have a bunch of small stones I’m not sure how to set other than flush setting. It would be interesting to see what you do with them.
I have made two round and one oval bezels with the jump rings in the bottom. Sure work great. Thanks
@@patredden4557 Glad this method is working for you Pat!
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! I appreciate the nice comment:)
Another great one like always
Thanks Sabreking!
use dentil floss under the cab when you are setting the height...easy to remove cab by pulling up the floss....then set final fit.
Thanks Ron! I use that truck on occasion:)
Nice custom piece
Thanks Tammy! I was pleased with how this one turned out. Thanks for watching!

Another GREAT video!! Thanks Chad!!
Thanks Karen! I’m glad you liked it:)
Mahalo 🌺🤙🏻🤗
Thanks Paula!
great video! I'll give this a try, love the design! Thank you for sharing! You are so calm when you solder......I need more of that! Did you put tag board in the setting? What if the piece got wet??
Thanks Laura! Yes, I did put some tagboard backing in there. It has been my experience that very little water gets under the stone, so it isn't much of an issue. Thank you for the nice comment!
Put a length of dental floss on the bezel and then push the stone in…to get the stone out pull on the floss
That’s a good trick I forget to mention to people. Thank you for bringing it up Larry!
I'm new to this ( less than 6 months) I'm really enjoying all the videos. I particularly liked this one and tried to adapt it to a crazy lace agate stone stone I had. . The problem I had were dings on my silver from shaping it. How do I avoid this or is there a way to get a better finish?
Hello Liza! I’m glad you are enjoying them:). You might try using nylon jawed pliers. They are less likely to ding up your metal, but they do make it harder to grip tightly.
Thanks again for a very interesting project. What is " Tag" board made from please? Cheers. Jim
Hello Jim. I usually tear the backs off of legal pads for it. Any compressed cardboard like what they make cereal boxes, etc will work:)
Thanks for the speedy response. I thought it might be plastic as card getting wet more cause a problem. Cheers Jim
@@jimbartley9125 I haven’t found that to be a problem. I occasionally run across someone wearing something I sold them 20+ years ago, and stones still seem tight and secure. Now if someone worked as a swim instructor, maybe…
Hello what kind of torch are you using?
Hello RD. I use a Smith Silversmith torch formerly called the Smith Hand-Torch. It is an Acetylene/air torch. I also have a couple of old Presto-Lite torches that work similarly. Thanks for the comment!
