    Fuck me, this is the best modes video on the ENTIRE internet. I figured out this was how modes worked years ago, but EVERY (modes are simple) tutorial describes using them absolutely wrong in comparison to this video. They have set me back years of guitar playing!! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😖 Thank you so much for confirming my original thoughts on how they work man 💪🤘

    Absolute brilliant! Sheer genius. Any adjective would be an understatement Gary!! The way you have explained two of the most complex concepts in guitar playing (1. Soloing over chord progressions; 2. Practical Application of modes for soloing over chord changes), JUST HATS OFF TO YOU. I could not find this kind of approach idea for beginner like us over entire youtube (be it that Music is Win guy, Rob Chapman; Sir Petrucci etc). You've proved again that one can be a greatest player but it doesn't mean that the same person can teach properly!!

    Ionian, in this context did not sound happy. At all. The backing track has a lot to say about it.
    It may not be “as dark” as you may like but “happy” is not the sound to describe it.
    Context is key.

    Oh my god, i was stressed thinking I had to learn all of this but now I realised that this third mode of D is just the Bb Major pentatonic shapes with the “spicy” notes thrown in.

    If you were using full triads rather than power chords, you would be sounding the thirds. How would that have changed the modes and notes you used in your solo?

    Just a suggestion Gary. 1. This vid is a little advanced for many beginners, so provide a disclaimer that atleast some basic theory regarding scales and modes are a must. 2. Please put up a tutorial for triad application (in that way people will be able to get out of that confusing "box shapes" and can play the B note of lydian when G(maj) chord comes in😁 and avoid the G# entirely, though it won't be lydian per se😝)

    I guess I was confused about how to play modes. I thought since you're in the key of D, you would play those modes (i.e D ionian, E dorian, F# phyrgian, G Lydian, etc). I checked that those would be the same notes but here if you play D phyrgian instead, you're technically out of key. Interesting stuff!

      The more chords in the progression the narrower your options unless you play a separate arpeggio/scale over each chord. Its harder cause you need to learn to recognise the chord in the progression and move with it. Thats what they do in jazz

      Dude, though its an old post, but I guess you have already studied some theory man! Its in the key of D only. The scale is melodic minor. From the chord progression he is playing (Dmin, G, A), these chords fit into D melodic minor scale. Thats why dorian and phrygian modes would fit perfectly since these two already has minor flavour

    I know this video is old but if you teach your video on how to solo over modes you don't have to treat the viewer like they're a beginner. It's so monotonous and it makes you scroll through the video like crazy. Chances are if you're looking up a video of how to solo over mods you're not a beginner....

    So overall pick D chord and solo over it some D modus that fit in?

  • @andychinn7674

    I'm confused cause the shapes your playing are not the shapes my paperwork or sheet music has. My shapes for phyrgian for example are shapes way different. Every video on modes everyone has different shapes.

      Andy Chinn don’t worry about it, some change the position of some notes for comfort or practicality. For example, you could be playing a G - A - B in the 6th string or you could play G - A in the 6th and B in the 5th string, it’s exactly the same. Some people learn the modes from learning the major scale, others from learning the pentatonic and adding two notes. I’m pretty sure there are even more ways. It’s two paths to the same objective

    So the key is D major ?????

    • @debasishdutta8352
      @debasishdutta8352 2 года назад +1

      No Mark, key is in D, (maj/min got blurred with power chords he was playing). The scale is melodic minor. Thats why phrygian and dorian sits perfectly
