When you come back it would be cool to do a video on indie bookstores/publishers or even our libraries. Libraries here are legally required to purchase their books from indie bookstores. The laws surrounding libraries here is sooo interesting and really helps cement the importance of literacy and local authors.
OMG it’s my hometown and my spots! The book you choose to read first is an essay on the Mont-Royal. 😊
That library is STUNNING. also, your French sounds amazing. I took French in high school for 3 years but I haven’t spoken in like two decades and as such I have forgotten most of it. But from what I remember it sounds great. Your pronunciation is 👌
OMG but can we talk about how delightful the shape of Quebecois paperbacks are?! So easy to hold, and can fit in a back pocket :P My fav bookstores during my last trip to Montreal were : Le port de tête, where I bought an illustrated comic of a dissertation on suicide (called "Vous avez détruit la beauté du monde") ; and the anarchist book store Librairie Anarchiste L'Insoumise, where I bought a bunch of zines (and stickers and pins) because luggage space is at a premium
I am French (from France) and I love your french ! It is really good ! For a French book I think you would like, there is "Du the pour les fantomes" by Chris Vuklisevic. Its one of the 2 5 stars that I had this year. It is a amazing book about death, family and trauma. Really, I recommend !
Wow, tu étais à Montréal??? I love how dedicated you are to learning French, and despite the Babbel lessons using métropolitain French, your accent definitely leans more Québécois! Also, I find it so interesting, because I live in the Montréal area and have trouble finding books in English (that aren't from Indigo...), but in your case, you absolutely used your time in Montréal to get francophone books! And yes, Québécois lit 100% tends to be absurd and a little weird!
I was born in Montreal, but grew up in Los Angeles. I'd love to get back there as an adult (I spent a week there when I was fourteen, but that's the only time.) I'd definitely want to know at least enough French to find my way around and order at restaurants.
I have been learning French for almost a year and a half and am always looking for new content. And you speak at the perfect speed. Not too fast or too slow. If you did just an occasional vid on littérature français ou quebecois that would be amazing! I'm always trying to find things that I can easily read. And I want to be familiar with the accent Quebecois even though I am working on speaking français métropolitain J'aimerais visiter Montréal un jour. Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo. J'adore. 💜
Ouhhh! Wajdi Mouawad also wrote Incendies. It was adapted into a movie, directed by none other then Denis Villeneuve!! Highly recommend the movie (never red the book though)
Dune's director, Denis Villeneuve, directed a movie adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad's best play (in my opinion) called Incendies a little while ago. It is heart wrenching and beautiful and profoundly human. You should check it out!
@@PlantBasedBride oh yes! It's the style, with the voiceover over a scene :) He used a lot of voice over to kind of...wax philosophical...as characters would wander around or if there was a passage of time
So nosey question from a non French speaker: is France French understood by people in Montreal? I know that Quebec French can be difficult for French speakers. I am from the US and my cousin (who is a bilingual Frech speaker) couldn't understand the Cajun (Acadian) French at all. Much to the sadness of the Cajun Drill Sargent, we met.
Yes, it is! There are some differences in informal French on both sides but the core of the language is the same in France and in Québec. I learned formal French growing up and I’ve used it in France and Québec with no issue!
Hi! Living in Quebec province, I'd say Quebec based francophones understand French francophones better than the French understand us. The Quebec slang is tinted by a lot of anglicisms, words that were somehow deformed over time, local expressions, making it weird and hard for French people to understand. Meanwhile Fench slang is much more literal and understood by most Quebecois. To be honest the French accent in general is simple, but I guess you could compare the difficulty of country Marseillais to Acadian, different in their own way but you really have to pay more attention when listening. Sorry for the long ramble!
Salut =) (We don't say "Allo" except in the beginning of phone calls by the way). Your french is quite good actually (I observe the quebec influence in the accent ^^). It's very difficult to prounounce the words correctly with so many silent letters and the diversity of sounds with the same letters. And the difference between female and male nouns... and the conjugation... Well be brave /o/ For instance, we pronounce "prophéties" like 'professies" (t as s). I wish you good luck and nice reading with your french TBR (we say PAL for "pile à lire" here). I think you choose very literary books, with metaphors (more complicated to understand if the first level is new). But I admire your ambition, you can progress very fast this way! Bonne continuation n,n
Merci! I actually had a French teacher in high school who always started class by saying “Allo Oui Bonjour” and it became a joke and a habit among my friends 😂 it just makes me happy to say!

Your french is PERFECT. Glad you enjoyed my hometown ☺️
Merci beaucoup 🥺 I’m hyper aware of how much practice I need to get back to where I was but I appreciate the compliment! You made my day ❤️
That library is so beautiful!!! I love the mosaics and stained glass. Yeah, some of those first lines of the books weren't super informative 😂
Haha right?? I was struggling to choose 😂 and isn’t that library beautiful? I wish my local library looked like that!
@@PlantBasedBride I would never want to leave if my local library looked like that. ❤️

Can you make a video on clean book recommendations for middle graders (Gr.7&8) that are slightly more mature, but not too gruesome or mature? Thanks!❤
Percy Jackson! It’s the greatest middle grade book series of all time (according to a lot of people-and me!)
