    Fantastic video. I’ve recently found your channel and these are some great videos. That camera placement provides what I like to call the best seat in the house. Nice job with the single pilot IFR workload…that vision jet is really nice to say the least. Nice flight. Thanks for taking us along. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you get a faster cruise if the temperature is higher if you're cruising at a fixed mach number, I seem to recall that the speed of sound goes as the square root of temperature or something like that, so mach 0.52 will be a couple knots faster if you're 15 or 20 degrees above standard.

Flu for a while and gradually decided I needed to do less stressful things. It’s amazing to see how automated flying has become compared to Planes from years ago. Great video as always! I am not a pilot but love airplanes and hope to someday get my PPL. Sorry for the noobie question, but when you levelled at FL310, there was no visibility for a while. What are the steps you take in that case? I assume no turbulence; no icing conditions allow you to stay at that FL? What would make you want to go to a lower FL? Thanks from Auckland, New Zealand!

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Месяц назад +1

      @@LucasPossamai Thanks for the question. The plane can handle the conditions at FL310 and it has the best fuel economy up there. We can stay in instrument weather unless there is thunderstorms or turbulence. Very cold conditions are not a problem for the jet. Moderately cold temperatures are more risky since ice can form. This does not happen when temperatures are cooler than -20C.

      @@Account-p1d We use maximum continuous thrust in the climb, which is all the thrust there is due to FADEC limitations. ☆☆☆☆Question:☆☆☆☆
    Is their a below or above certain air speed or a low or height requirement if you need to pull the parachute?

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  29 дней назад

      @@rwedel738 Thanks for watching and the question…. Yes to both… There are speed and altitude limitations. The CAPS system or Cirrus Airframe Parachute System can be deployed safety above 600 ft above the ground or more and IF the aircraft is between 135 knots indicated airspeed or 145 knots true air speed. Above those speeds, the system monitors speeds trends and will wait to deploy the rocket to send the parachute if the plane is slowing to envelope speed. If the system senses the plane is speeding up due to loss of control, it will deploy the parachute. You can imagine it would be hard to slow from 300 knots true airspeed to 145 knots true airspeeds quickly in cruise flight or in a descent. The only way is to abruptly pitch up to bleed off airspeed quickly.

    Why does the VNE speed seem to vary depending on your altitude?

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Месяц назад

      Vne was not mentioned. I refer to VMO and MMO as max airspeeds. They are always the same. VMO is 250 KIAS and MMO is 0.53 Mach. What is discussed is the relationship between IAS and TAS based upon altitude.

    • @BryantVucich
      @BryantVucich Месяц назад

      @@DonAv8s What I mean is at 27:30 in the video, on the airspeed indicator your redline seems to be right at 190 indicated. However then at 28:30 the redline appears to be just above 220 indicated, then in the descent at 32:00 it's at 250 indicated.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Месяц назад

      @@BryantVucich Yes, this was explained since KIAS and KTAS diverge as altitude increases. The plane will never display 250 KIAS or 0.53 Mach at the same time dues to changes in ai density as altitudes increase. The plane does not use VMO for speed reference above FL180. It uses MMO or max mach number in the flight levels. KIAS is used for stall speed and VRef at all altitudes, but KTAS is a better reference for actual speed in the flight levels.

    It does blow me away how poor of performance a $4-million jet has. Getting a 500fpm climb with engine anti-ice on is nuts. I mean the overall climb rate didn't look too spectacular.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  11 дней назад

      I fly them, didn’t design the plane.
      Blown away? 4 million? More like $3.2 million plus prepaid maintenance. Have you looked at flight level climb performance at max gross weight for M2, or Phenom 100? Those are about $6m and over twice the cost of operation. The Williams engine only makes 1846 lbs of thrust at sea level, but only burns between 58-70 gals per hour in MCT cruise. In icing we have to maintain 160 KIAS and that limits the climb rate.

    • @LimaFoxtrot
      @LimaFoxtrot 11 дней назад

      @@DonAv8s Never said you designed the plane. It's a great plane for people that want to have a single-engine jet rating I guess. Overall though, the performance is something that continues to plague the SF50. Aside from maybe a million dollar price difference -- which when we're talking "millions", what's another million -- I don't know why anyone would buy an SF50 over say a TBM 960.
      The SF50 is too wide for its length, so it creates too much drag. The engine is too small and can't move enough air which makes it inefficient. That inefficiency means much more fuel burned vs. thrust generated. The wing is too thick -- jets need a swept wing to get closer to mach 1.
      Once you factor in useful load is half of a turboprop, take-off and landing distance are twice a turboprop, fuel burn is twice a turboprop, range is poor unless the plane is pretty empty, etc...I just can't see purchasing one. The SF50 has very limited useful load and its hot and high performance sucks. On top of that, you need an annual 61.58 ride.
      Does it have cool factors? Absolutely. Do I see why some people buy them? Yup. However, if you're actually crunching the numbers on it, I just can't see the appeal -- outside of "I fly a jet!"

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  11 дней назад

      @@LimaFoxtrot Aviation is full of opinions and preferences. As it should be… Price out a TBM at acquisition and then cost of operation and ownership. Yes, another 2-3 million at acquisition does matter. Personally, I don’t have a budget for a $5-6m aircraft. Why pay twice as much to only gain 25% better speed, payload or endurance? Then review the cabin experience compared to other aircrafts. Passengers do not like facing rearward in club seats… You’re obviously biased against the Vision Jet, as many are. That is fine but you still watched this content… What are you flying? I have flown TBM’s, M600’s, and M500’s and I prefer SF50 based upon acquisition, maintenance support, standardized training, cabin experience, fit and finish.
