I'm guessing this omnibus is only collecting the Peter Tomasi stuff. The issues dealing with the death and resurrection of batman were a part of Grant Morrison's run.

This was the first omnibus I've ever read. I loved it even though I had no idea what happened in Morrison's and Snyder's run. I mean the mourning issues were so powerful. It really showcased the more human side of Bruce and Damien how they both learn to trust and respect each other and then seeing Bruce loosing all of that... Oh and as far as I can tell Frankenstein is a legit character in the DCU, he's a member of Justice Leauge Dark and Seven soldiers.

The New 52 is what really derailed this book along with Morrison's Batman INC. The reboot happened right in the middle of Tomasi and Gleasons run along with INC and a lot just fell through the cracks

I love this book, but it definitely requires some shuffling around to get the whole story. It's very intertwined with Incorporated and Snyder's Batman. Tomasi and Gleason are one of my favorite creative teams though. Once we get the rest of Morrison's run and then a Snyder omni, I am going to put sticky tabs with numbers on them across the 3 books to remind me of the correct reading order. XD

So, I love this book, and at first I was thrown off by your relative dislike of it, but as you explained it I definitely think your complaints have merit. This is a book to read after all of Morrison's Batman run. And I agree that they should have either included all of Death of the Family or not included those tie-ins at all.
Now, basically, Damian's death happens around the end of Batman Incorporated. At this point, Tomasi and Gleason were killing it on B&R, doing that really cool Nobody story and whatnot. And then the death happens. Tomasi and Gleason can't just keep using Damian, so they made the best of an unfortunate situation. They did a completely silent mourning issue which was incredibly well done, and then they turned 'Batman and Robin' into a team-up book with various members of the DC Universe all designed around helping Bruce cope with Damian's death, so 'Batman and Two-Face', 'Batman and Batgirl', 'Batman and Aquaman,' etc. I think the lack of the important tie-ins for Death of the Family and Damian's death made you feel like EVERYTHING was all over the place because its jumping from character to character then just exacerbated the issue. But when you know/have read Damian's death and Death of the Family, the latter half of the run doesn't really feel disconnected but more like Bruce's odyssey to face his son's death.

  • @Chasing_Labels
    @Chasing_Labels 5 лет назад +7

That is one of the problems that I had with reading a lot of The New 52 Batman Family comics. There was a lot of crossover stuff. To really understand what was going on, and get the whole story, you kind of had to read all of them, because the events were all happening in the same world and at the same time. I don't know why they didn't include the other issues in this omnibus? Maybe because the omnibus was already too big and they didn't want to have to make more than one volume? As for Dc's version of Frankenstein, he's been around since the 40s, he had his premiere in Detective Comics. In the New 52 he was in The Justice League Dark comic. I wish that book would get an Omnibus release.

  • @uncultured-collective

Great review. I love Tomasi and Gleason's work and I enjoyed this book. As you stated Scott Snyder's Batman covers most of Death of the Family. No GD idea why they have not released a Scott Snyder New 52 Batman Omnibus. That needs to be a thing.
Tomasi and Gleason took over B&R after Morrison (Morrison's run on B&R will be in his upcoming Omnibus). Morrison was writing main Batman title and Batman and Robin (Morrison and Quitely). Professor Pyg anyone! He sent Batman through time (read killed) and started writing Dick and Damien. Then Batman returns and you get this omnibus.
It's jolting the way this reads (trying to remember the 52) but I think it is a worthwhile omnibus. Especially if you're a Batman fan.
As always great recent reads. Cheers!

Like most lengthy runs, you have to jump around books to get the whole read. This reminds me of Bendis New Avengers run where you had to jump around between NA, Dark Avengers, Mighty Avengers and even a couple of non-Bendis stories to flesh it all out.

I'm reading this now, but I read Batman Incorporated last year, I think, and I read Death of the Family a few months ago. What this omnibus should've done was, well, one thing it should've done was tell you what issue you're about to read. But the the other thing is they should've at the very least had a summary of what happened in other issues that effect the current issue, like the X-Men Ghosts trade did with their tie-ins to the Beyonder storyline in 202 and 203. They could have told you what happened in those issues and given you the option of reading those issues if you wanted to before proceeding, and even if you didn't want to do it, you'd at least have the gist of what's going on. While not the best Batman run ever, I do think this series is worth reading, but DC could've put the omnibus together better than they did.

  • @keytothecity8155

I agree that they should have included the issue that Damian dies in at least, but it’s written by Morrison. They should have just called it Batman and Robin Omnibus and included everything that you said. Binding in the book was also not up to par with a lot of the newer omnibuses coming out. You should definitely read the new Seven Soldiers Omnibus by Morrison. It’s 30 issues of quality writing and art for 40$. You could then get the new Final Crisis 10th Anniversary Omnibus. It’s the only way to fully understand Final Crisis imo. Also Final Crisis is really important if you plan on getting Batman by Morrison Vol 2 which I’m assuming you are.

I just wiki'd the Court of Owls, Death of the Family and Batman Inc to give me a little background for the B&R tie-ins. I don't think you'll need an in depth knowledge of those arcs to help you with B&R. Maybe a short writeup explaining the arc to help understand the tie-in would've help if there's no summary in the omnibus.
Maybe it's a little different for the Batman Inc related issues as the events there have more consequences in B&R.

That way, I could have this run and still intersperse the Batman Incorporated volumes (where Damien dies) and the Death of the family run. I skipped buying vol 5 though: like you said, it's a random two-face story and just stuck out like sore thumb. It does mean I don't need to wait for Omnia or absolutes for this era too :)

Gem man, I love you to death, love your videos. Y’all put out great content. But I gotta completely disagree with you on this one. You can’t go hating on a book just cause you haven’t read the material that precedes it. This is a phenomenal run, one of my favs from the New 52. Granted, to get the full effect of the story, you need to have read pretty much all of Morrison’s run pre New 52, and then his Batman Inc. stuff, both pre New 52 and New 52 (it’s only like 20 issues total). And you also need to read Snyder’s Batman run, if not the whole thing, then the Death of the Family arc for sure. But all of it is so engrossing and encompassing, and it’s awesome how the three different runs (Morrison’s Batman/Batman & Robin/Batman Inc, Snyder’s Batman, and Tomasi’s Batman and Robin) compliment and expand upon each other. IMO, the greatest era of Batman comics ever (2006-2016). Keep up the great content man

I get that. We already have the one Morrison Batman omni. Volume 2 has been solicited, which will have all his Batman & Robin stuff. And the third volume will cover his Batman Inc. stuff I believe. But like you said, if you can’t wait for the omnis, you could go and read the Batman and Robin Absolute, followed by the Batman Inc. Absolute. That’ll fill a lot in for you. But I do agree with many of the other commenters. We desperately need a Scott Snyder Batman omni or two. Make it happen DC!! @@comicsandstuff616 But this is the thing that makes me collect manga still. Cause the stories are straight up vol to vol. No needless jumping around. I love comics but the way they release shit is fucking annoying.

I mean, once all three Morrison volumes are out, it’s gonna be a pretty straight read through... this run just takes place at the same time as Morrison’s Batman Inc. and Snyder’s Batman. Not a whole lot of jumping around

Never was really a fan of Peter Tomasi. Met him in person and he's kind of a jerk.

(I'm writing this comment also in the newest video to get more chance to get an answer from you, thanks in advance.)
