Nice vid! My current top 10 Batman stories would be: 1. Going Sane 2. Knightfall 3. White Knight 4. The Long Halloween 5. Return of Bruce Wayne 6. The Court of Owls 7. Bruce Wayne: Fugitive 8. Year Zero 9. Contagion 10. Absolution
Which is weird as the original book was on glossy paper. Looks like DC seemingly just aped the format of the Year One Absolute with the original colouring version on retro looking paper when it was originally a premium release resulting in an unauthentic original colouring. Good absolutebthough and a stone cold classic story
Grant Morrisons run is also my fave by miles. The 'what if all these things actually happened to one guy' approach to the characters vast history is such a great idea and masterfully executed. I'm.super glad I waited out all previous versions until the 3 omnis in the correct reading order 🙌
I was into comics in high school (2011 to 2015) and my senior year my English teacher recommended some of his favorite Batman comics to me because he saw me reading Watchmen in class one day. He let me borrow his copy of Batman Year One, Batman The Long Halloween, and The Dark Knight Returns. All three are now what I consider to be the foundational trinity of Batman stories.
It's amazing how many of these books are now out of print, or available only in either the cheapest paperbacks or Absolutes. The deluxe hardcovers and omnibus editions are mostly defunct. Gothic is op completely. Frank Miller has never had an omnibus as far as I can tell (!!!!), and his deluxe hcs are all op. Even Dark Knight Returns can't be found in a regular hc -- one of the all-time classics. The Tomasi omnibus is gone. Knightfall omnibuses are gone. Arkham Asylum deluxe hc is gone. Etc., etc. Very frustrating. In any case, as a fan of Batman who stopped reading the comics 40 years ago, I'm grateful for this list, which will help me get back into reading Batman, in whatever format I can find.
My top ten Batman comics 10. The Dark Knight Returns 9. Gotham by Gaslight 8. Devil's Advocate 7. Knight fall 6. Dark Knight Dark City 5. Penguin Triumphant 4. A serious house on serious earth 3. Eye of the beholder 2. Cult 1. No Man's Land
Thanks for the video! It's intimidating getting into such a huge canon that it's quite overwhelming. Im replaying the Arkham video game series and wanted to get into comics to scratch my itch for more Batman. Will follow your recommendations :)
Completely agreed on Batman by Grant Morrison. This is the Batman I loved most. Heck its not only the greatest Batman run but its the best superhero run i have ever read.
I was in Vancouver visiting my Dad, and he took me to see Batman in '89. I wasn't too interested, at the time. But after seeing that, I had him take me to one of the comic stores and they recommended A Death in the Family and The Killing Joke. I am really pleased to still have them.
Great list you have there! There is a very underrated story Batman: The Cult, written by Jim Starlin, which never seems to fall into anyone's top 10 list. It was a very dark and almost fanatical story. If you haven't checked that out, please do! :)
I finally found them in their single issues. This is one of the best Batman stories. The Dark Knight rises pulls plot lines from this story and it's the first appearance of Deacon Blackfire. Jason Todd Robin is also great in this story
In terms of accessibility, I think DKR is the Batman story for new readers cuz it gets to the core of what modern Batman is. With also giving us a very nuanced story at the same time
Dark Knight Returns and Hush are a couple of my favourites. I was surprised they didn't get a spot on this list. I'm yet to read any of Grant Morrison Batman.
Been collecting for a long time now and my top ones, (i might miss out some) but #3 court of owls #2 Batman Venom #1 Will always be The Dark Knight returns. Batman Venom is quite a rare one to try and get your hands on I actually own both paperbacks with the remastered issue 2 cover and the 1993 dc paperback with the horrifying purple pinky background colour. Its great at making Batman crumble as a character and how he regains his Batman identity back by going through alot of stuff with the venom drug. I also luv to pick out how Batman first took the drug and how it was introduced first to Batman and then Bane later using it to make his Bane appearance stand out and gain his strength. The court of owls is my favourite modern comic ever which is part of the new 52 of course and its such a great compelling story and its quite a short one to and it shows how much great quality Scott puts in his writing and how epic Gregs artwork is. The Dark Knight returns, ITS THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS CMON MAN!!!
As soon as I saw the Zenith, Animal Man, Doom Patrol and Seven Soldiers on the shelf, I knew that Batman by Grant Morrison had to be on this Top 10. I was very delighted to see it take the number one spot! And I fully agree! Morrison's Batman is one of the best runs of the character ever made, followed closely by Tomasi's Batman & Robin.
Superb list! Loved that you mentioned Batman: Gothic. I'm very picky with absolutes but I had to get black mirror and killing joke in absolutes. I hope they will one day make Gothic into an absolute edition.
i keep coming back to your list. along with some minor adds from Omar it makes for an amazing read. such a great job compiling the chronology and I'm sure has helped so many find their favorite batman.
So glad I stumbled across this channel. I love comics and especially the Batman graphic novels. I have The Long Halloween, Year One, and The Killing Joke. I have way more on my list to read! This helped a lot!!
Some honorable mentions: Batman Year 100 - a futuristic take on batman with a very unique art style, Batman Europa - great story that takes different artists taking lead each chapter, Batman Noel - essentially a Christmas story charles dickens esque, Batman year two - a story that brings the vigilante that was before batman. I could go on but these were afew I personally liked.
Newer fan here and I just got and read year one. I really liked it and I'm on my second read. Getting a lot more out of it this time! There is so much good stuff to get into with this character and I really am excited about it 😊
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend "Blind Justice" by Sam Hamm, for the 600th issue of Detective Comics in 1989. Hamm is a screenwriter (see Tim Burton's Batman). For his comic arc, Hamm did NOT go for the predictable Joker story, or an "all the rogues gallery getting together to take Batman out" plot. Instead he creates a conspiracy within Wayne Technologies, compelling Bruce Wayne and Batman to make choices, and accept consequences, that must be lived with. Hamm's story is also based on science (even if it is science fiction, but no magic, supernatural, etc), and morality, which make the best stories imo. It also explores some of the true costs of being Batman, how Bruce Wayne reinforces his obsessive focus and motivation almost daily, and the price he pays for it.
Bro hell yea hell of a vid people dont know about these great stories. We need a omni of the Legend of the Dark knight stories. Venom,Gothic,Prey theres so many.
My greatest, in preferred/recommended reading order: Year One The Long Halloween/Dark Victory Hush Under the Hood (plus awesome movie) Grant Morrison's Batman, especially Batman and Robin The Black Mirror The Dark Knight Returns (Actually prefer the movie) The Court of Owls/City of Owls Zero Year: Secret City/Dark City Earth One Vols 1 & 2 Still need to read Robin/Batgirl: Year One by Chuck Dixon, White Knight by Sean Murphy, New 52 Batman & Robin by Tomasi and Rebirth Detective Comics by James Tynion IV. Tom King's Batman and Gotham Central on my radar too
The version of DC Universe by Alan Moore shown in the video does not contain the Killing Joke! Only earlier printings with the cover by Brian Bolland do. And yes, those do contain the original coloring.
I used lesser known Batman graphic novels to connect all the most reputable ones and created a continuity between them all. Some of those lesser knowns include Prey. Highly underrated story that sees the introduction of Hugo Strange, a story set in the early years of Batman and the first time he’s mentally broken along with his identity figured out. This also shows him building the first Batmobile, as he uses the hang glider from year one throughout Prey until the very end when the Batmobile is built. There’s also Death in the family in this continuity of mine, which sees Jason Todd and Batman tracking down his mother, one of the possible ones being Lady Shiva, who would go on to heal Batman’s back in Knightquest which is another graphic novel within my continuity. Other stories in there not mentioned in this video that I highly recommend are The Cult, Batgirl/Robin Year one and Nightwing year one both by Chuck Dixon, Knightfall (origin and introduction of Bane) and its sequels Knightquest and Knightsend.
Year 100, The Cult, War of Jokes and Riddles, Earth One, White Knight, Three Jokers, Knight Of Vengeance, Batman Universe, The Batman's Grave, All in addition to your list.
Great video!! I would argue that the Joker became who he is because he allowed that bad day to consume him. I felt the message was that you always have a choice on wether you want to follow the path of good or evil, despite your circumstances.
I usually read Haunted Knight when I read Long Halloween and Dark Victory. I recommend Batman R.I.P. and Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader?, and Final Crisis. Also check out Zero Year then Death of the Family and finally Endgame. You won't be sorry. Lately here are some gems I liked... Batman White Knight Batman Earth One Batman: Court of Owls Batman: Three Jokers Dark Night (a true Batman story ) - Amazing work by Paul Dini who worked valiantly on Batman The Animated Series (which literally any Batman fan ADORES)
In the labyrinth section of Court of owls I remember when the pages invert I kept on turning backwards because it was upside down and thought Bruce was going through some loop
If you're a fan of the early career of Batman, I would also recommend Batman and the Monster Men/Batman and the Mad Monk by Matt Wagner. The stories take place between the Year One and Long Halloween stories.
Being a massive fan of Tim Drake, A Lonely Place of Dying will always be one of my favorite Batman stories. Another Batman story I love, it might be my favorite, is one that isn't that popular: Batman War Games. Finally, I really love Tynion's Batman stuff (Eternal, Detective Comics, and I'm betting his current Batman run is going to be great, even though it just started).
Great list and I agree with your number one. A little tip for absolutely new readers to the world of Batman. DO NOT read The Dark Knight returns until you've read some of or if possible all the books mentioned in this video. I made that mistake in 1987 and I had no idea who bald Harvey or old Selina was. Years later after I got to know the world of Gotham and it's players I read DKR again and my mind was blown. Amazing. But Grant is the absolute BEST for me
This is exactly the kind of video I needed because I'm trying to get into the Batman Comics and had no idea where or how to start it. Thank you for this video!
This is the first video I'm seeing from this channel and that intro was amazing and had me sold!😂 The rest of the video was great too, and as a comicbook fan myself, I'm going to definitely continue watching videos from here. Subscribed
I do get confused on the conversation bubbles cause it was hard to pick up which order they went. And I loved Batman hear one too! Listening to commissioner Gordon was awesome and you saw where the movie took something’s from the book! Thank you man!
Great overview Omnibus Collector. I think most people would include DK Returns in the Top 3 if not #1 so I'm glad to see you break the mold (it's #1 for me). A great story you didn't include was Paul Pope's Batman Year 100. Unbelievable story & art.
My favorites would be 1. Knightfall (Vol. 1) 2. The Long Halloween 3. Soft Targets 4. Under the Red Hood 5. Death of the Family 6. Night of the Owls 7. The Dark Knight Returns 8. No Man's Land 9. The Black Mirror 10. Batman: Ego
watching this because i just watched the new batman movie, i always read the comics i found randomly at bookstores so i dont really know the character, the movie made me fall in love with him
I just started at my local library. I was in frat during college and this girl in a sorority I use to hook up with her boyfriend read them, I use to go over there and when I was there I’d see them and this was during all the movies. Well the movies kickstarted it picked Batman out, and looking at those books sparked it for me. The last two weeks I’ve been burning them up! The court of owls was fucking badass! Thanks man!
One of the things I love about The Killing Joke is that it was meant to be an alternative universe type story and not part of the main Batman canon but both readers and DC themselves loved the story so much they made it canon and it's been a part of Batman's core history ever since and it's a great story for a newcomer because most people are aware of Batman and the Joker by now so you don't necessarily need to read anything before it to enjoy it.
I prefer to read the Omniverse/trade paperbacks bound form collections, because collecting one by one is too expensive and then you have to worry about preserving your condition
IDK if I’d say “best” superhero run of all time, but it’s absolutely one of my favorites, and it is far and away the best take on Batman. Plus; Frank Quitely, Frazer Irving, JH Williams III, and Chris Burnham deliver career-best artwork.
@@aztektheultimatewoman it’s in my opinion the best I’ve read. But I haven’t read too many stories so yeah. But among stories like Year One, Dark Knight Returns, Long Halloween, I love Morrisons run even MORE than those. It’s so iconic and defines the character of Batman for me.
I’m a big fan of the Darkseid v Superman/JLA . So I just purchased fourth world 1-2, infinite crisis, Morrison 1-3, final crisis. Hopefully I’m covered to understand the story being told 🤞
Thank you very much! I been wanting to start to read Batman and never knew where to start, Thank you for living the links to the books! I have been going to my local librady and it seems like they have lot of these books in trade paperbacks, So you telling me the name of the stories are helping me out!
Great list agree with all of them. If you’re looking for some lesser known reads of Batman which are amazing I’d recommend Holy Night by Alan Brennert it’s a great elseworlds tale. Matt wagners run “The monster men” is a great tale as is Darwyn Cooke’s Ego. Steven Englehart’s Strange apparitions is very well done for a Bronze Age story.
10-Batman No Mans Land 9-Batman Hush 8-Batman The Court Of Owls 7-Batman A Death İn The Family 6-Batman Under The Red Hood 5-Batman The Long Halloween 4-Batman Year One 3-Batman Knightfall 2-Batman The Killing Joke 1-Batman Dark Knight Returns My list is this
Grant Morison wrote the story for a video game Predator: Concrete Jungle. Theres a funny one Batman Crazy Love and other things. Also Batman VS Alien Batman VS Predator Batman The Last Knight on Earth Batman The Cult
You out in two quality Scott Snyder stories in there but one I think is often overlooked is Snyder’s Allstar Batman Issues 6-10 (the second story/graphic novel in Snyder’s Allstar Batman run.
Hey, great video, I would preferr to have the recommendations splited by individual comics, because those recopilations make me have repeated numbers between collections (I'm from Argentina and we don't have the same access to that collections). But I will look into the grant Morrison series. Aside from that, have you red "The seduction of the Gun". I was a child and read the series of The adventures of Batman in the 90's. and one day my mom bought me this number and really blowed my mind.
Awesome video, really liked that you added a list of books you talked about at the end of the video i always appreciate that for a top ten list, great work
Feel like you missed out of Knightfall, long Halloween, dark victory, and Venom. But no man's land and Hush are the main batman stories I will always recommend.
Thanks for the video! I agree with all your picks..I would have had DKR and Hush in my top 10 though. There are some less popular titles that I really enjoyed like The Cult, Year 100 and Vampire. It would be awesome to see your favorite Superman stories! Take care.
Jazz Cabbage Comics it’s just a parody of 90’s sitcom openings. Or like Adult Swim had a parody a while back called “Too Many Cooks” that was similar in style
For beginners I suggest start with batman year one than the long Halloween, the killing joke batman death in the family batman the three jokers and in the last read batman knighfall after that start reading the batman who laughs comic book.
Batman Long Shadows is frequently overlooked, it was actually the first batman comic I’d ever read, I was so young I didn’t comprehend or know what final crisis was. Not saying it’s a good beginner comic (it’s not) but to any average batman enthusiast definitely check it out before they stop printing it (which is going to be soon). It’s by Judd Winick, writer of Batman: Under the Red Hood.
great stuff on Morrison. Not many lists like this focus on the different runs of the amazing writers who have taken over the series. I am currently reading Post Crisis Batman in order so I've read a lot of the early Morrison stuff but I have not gotten to his run yet. I am currently at Starlin's run on Batman and Grant BreyFogle on Detective which are both bare bones gritty realistic takes on the mythos and some of the best Batman writing I've read. Snyder's legendary run is what got me back into the comics so I am super stoked about reading his earlier takes on Batman that I haven't read yet, like Black Mirror and such. Anyways, great list and insight from a fellow BAtFan
@@syedali9890 they’re in the descriptions of all my videos, so if you watch any newer content you’ll see them. Or just look up “the omnibus collector” anywhere else.
I read Year One and The dark knight returns. They where my fathers tho I'm interested in the black and white collection boxed set and the Batman boxed set.
You mentioned the killing joke, but i think the riddlerd one bad day story def deserved an honorable mention. but i do understand that it is rather complex
My list: The dark knight returns Year one The long Halloween The killing joke Ego The cult Arkham asylum Rest in peace Demon tales Ten nights of the beast
Thanks for input on past Batman books! I returned to collecting comics a year and a half ago and slowly collecting back issues of Batman (a lot out there)! This video will help me to weed through what to buy and not buy. I am only seeking major storylines.

My favorites would be
1. Knightfall (Vol. 1)
2. The Long Halloween
3. Soft Targets
4. Under the Red Hood
5. Death of the Family
6. Night of the Owls
7. The Dark Knight Returns
8. No Man's Land
9. The Black Mirror
10. Batman: Ego
watching this because i just watched the new batman movie, i always read the comics i found randomly at bookstores so i dont really know the character, the movie made me fall in love with him
Glad you gave the Tomasi run some love, I own them all in trade but would really like that omni
I love how detail orientated your video is and also not just talking about the classics ! thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Crazy coincidence I just bought Batman omnibus Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. I'm loving everything I'm reading so far!
amazing video. Definitely going to use it to build my collection.
Grant Morrison’s run was my entry to Batman (and comics) as an active comics reader, so awesome and fun.
I’ve never read a comic book but Batman is my favorite super hero so I’m writing all these down haha
The only Grant Morrison I own is Arkham Asylum. Thanks for the recommendation :)
You are right about of Gothic... My Favorite
Hey thank you for the video as someone who just starting reading comics for the first time this is really helpful on what to read and buy
Thanks man!
Great reviews. I 100% agree on the Grant Morrison run. Kudos!
Any recommendations of like longer runs? Something more modern that’s long running and features a lot of Batman villains.
Morrison, Snyder, Tomasi (Batman and Robin), Dini, King, Tynion (Detective)
I prefer to read the Omniverse/trade paperbacks bound form collections, because collecting one by one is too expensive and then you have to worry about preserving your condition
I have Year One, Killing Joke, Batman/TMNT and the Morrison run. I want to order Gothic Long Halloween/Dark Victory omnibus, and Gotham by Gaslight!
All good ones! I’m hoping one day for a thin omnibus of all three Batman/TMNT stories. Just order led the Gaslight deluxe myself!
Grant Morrison’s Batman is not only the best Batman run if all time, it is the best comic/superhero run of all time. Just unmatched brilliance.
Yeah, their entire DC oeuvre is one of the greatest superhero stories ever told. Hands down
IDK if I’d say “best” superhero run of all time, but it’s absolutely one of my favorites, and it is far and away the best take on Batman.
@johnlindsay7301 I fully agree!
10-Batman No Mans Land
9-Batman Hush
8-Batman The Court Of Owls
7-Batman A Death İn The Family
6-Batman Under The Red Hood
5-Batman The Long Halloween
4-Batman Year One
3-Batman Knightfall
2-Batman The Killing Joke
1-Batman Dark Knight Returns
My list is this
Grant Morison wrote the story for a video game Predator: Concrete Jungle.
Theres a funny one Batman Crazy Love and other things.
Also Batman VS Alien
Batman VS Predator
Batman The Last Knight on Earth
Batman The Cult
Awesome video, really liked that you added a list of books you talked about at the end of the video i always appreciate that for a top ten list, great work
Sam M I decided at the last minute to put it on there, especially since I wound up giving so many honorable mentions!
Thanks for watching!
@@omnibuscollector good choice! Your videos have only gotten better so keep up the good work man!
Take care.
man... one of the greatest videos on RUclips by far
Your intro is so great and makes me laugh. Is it a reference to a tv show? I feel like I’ve seen that style somewhere
Jazz Cabbage Comics it’s just a parody of 90’s sitcom openings. Or like Adult Swim had a parody a while back called “Too Many Cooks” that was similar in style
It’s too many cooks and the 90s for sure. I didn’t know if there was a specific 90s sitcom that did it.
You should upload it as a separate video like a separate intro video that shows up on your channel at the top for new viewers
@@omnibuscollector Too Many Cooks came to mind when watching the video, but I thought the song was a parody of the How I Met Your Mother theme.
hugorios the actual tune is just a free to use track I found on RUclips when I looked up “no copyright sounds sitcom music”
Your videos are so professional, well done!👍
Very kind of you to say!
@@omnibuscollector 😁👍
Thanks for the beginner recommendations
For beginners I suggest start with batman year one than the long Halloween, the killing joke batman death in the family batman the three jokers and in the last read batman knighfall after that start reading the batman who laughs comic book.
Would love to see you create more videos like this on either other dc characters or marvel characters
Fantastic video, I was not aware of the Loeb & Sale Omnibus and will be certainly getting that among others. Great work 👍
I think we need more videos of such kind. I know you are into manga now, but some comic recommendation from time to time will always be nice.
I make comic content on my other platforms.
@@omnibuscollector can you please share me the links?
@@syedali9890 they’re in the descriptions of all my videos, so if you watch any newer content you’ll see them. Or just look up “the omnibus collector” anywhere else.
@@omnibuscollector Tictok is banned in India, I see you update a lot on twitter. Hope you make more video content. Thanks anyways.
I read Year One and The dark knight returns. They where my fathers tho I'm interested in the black and white collection boxed set and the Batman boxed set.
You mentioned the killing joke, but i think the riddlerd one bad day story def deserved an honorable mention. but i do understand that it is rather complex
@@denny.h776 that comic would not be published for another three or so years after I made this video.
@@omnibuscollector i realized my mistake my b
Black mirror is a great choice!
Thanks for the video
I'd love to watch a video about your favourite Spider-Man stories, he's my fav character of all time after all 😂
My list:
The dark knight returns
Year one
The long Halloween
The killing joke
Ego
The cult
Arkham asylum
Rest in peace
Demon tales
Ten nights of the beast
Thanks for input on past Batman books! I returned to collecting comics a year and a half ago and slowly collecting back issues of Batman (a lot out there)! This video will help me to weed through what to buy and not buy. I am only seeking major storylines.
Thank you so much. A would highly appreciate more content about Batman!
