In the beginning, there was nought but a great yawning void known as Ginnungagap. The first realm to form was Muspellsheim in the south, a bright land, engulfed in fire and guarded by Surt with his flaming sword. To the north formed Niflheim, the freezing land of fog, containing the spring Hvergelmir, from where the primordial rivers began to flow.
From driftwood, Odin and his brothers created new life. Odin gifting them breath and life, Vili intelligence and feeling and Ve form, speech, hearing and sight. Thus, the first humans were born, a man and a woman, Ash and Elm. They were given a home in Midgard and it is here where humans still reside to this day.

Not really since this is my religion
Well, Christian religion is as true as all other myths
The difference is that Christianity had the biggest propaganda
Dr. DeadPool I can’t think of it off the top of my head but there is at least one civilization who’s mythology or belief also had a flood in in it. I want to say Greek but I just heard it. The difference was a king wanted to learn how the man, who was like Noah, become one of the Gods. He explained that he over heard how the world would be flooded and tricked the people into helping him build a boat. Told them he was moving away and the people couldn’t help any faster, they really wanted him gone. So the world flooded and the people died besides “Noah”. So the Gods rewarded him with Immortality for saving the human race. Listen to Mythologies on Parcast. Really great stories

Norse mythology predated Christianity
But Thora predate norse
After studying many of the worlds mythologies and religions it’s always striking to see some details that all seem to share.
Christianity shares a lot of small details with Norse mythology especially.
-Death and resurrection of the primary god
-Horn being blown at the end of the world
-A serpent being an incarnation of evil
-A world changing flood being escaped through an ark
-Two initial humans
-The world serpent and the leviathan
And really a ton more.
Everything comes back to the Bible. If you do research all religions steal from Christianity
I think the christianity resemblance is actually intentional because Indo Eruopean mythologies share many parallels like all the Greek; Norse ; Baltic and Vedic mythologies have many concepts that are basically the same. One of these being the world serpents and stuff ; So it might be that When first christians were compiling the Old testament they might have shoved those in.
It’s creepy once you start realizing how similar ALL religions and mythologies are. Ancient and modern. Makes you think all of these separate religions were created to sustain war…
Just from that list, there are many similarities with Islam as well
@@JocieFox53 I’ve not studied all religions, but it amazes me how many depict giants too.

Anyone else see the really strong similarity to greek mythology in the beginning? How 3 brothers kill the giant that created then. Reminded me of how zeus, hades, and Poseidon killed their titan creator.
Devin perry Roman, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc. MOST mythology follow a generic template and are very similar. All of the ones I just listed also had a sun god that was VERY similar to Jesus
Can we call this their counter part?
Most major religions including Paganism all have eerily similar creation stories and mythology. Super interesting considering all the conflicts we have today.
N Jugs Wrong. Jesus is very similar to these Gods. Norse Mythology existed long before Christianity terrorized the World.
Both religions come from earlier Indo European Pagan beliefs
It never ceases to amaze me that similarities in the creation myths. Many religions have common themes but different names, it just makes one wonder how the interpretations came about and what truth, (if any) could be derived from each. I bet the a culmination of a single truth from each religions creation story would in fact comprise a real origin story of humanity, it however, seems impossible to know which parts hold truth, and which parts are just very interesting story telling.
So r u an atheist then?

just one thing, Hel isn't where dishonorable people go after death. Snori had even written and described it as having gold floor, mead brewing, and waiting with a shield to welcome Baldr in his Eddas. Aside from that everything is pretty spot on.
Right Hel is basically where most everyone goes after death it wasn't meant for punishment.
I'd say leaving out Freyja and the fact that she gets half of the fallen warriors AND gets to choose first is also a bit strange. And if we talk about afterlifes, mentioning that the drowned ones go to Ran would also be nice.

Also some mangas/animes make some references to the Norse mythology (Vinland saga, The legend of the galactic heroes, Attack on Titans). Valhalla, Ymir and Odin are all words I heard for a couple of years now and haven't grasped their origin until recently.
In attack on titans for example, the original titan is Ymir. The warhamer titan is definitely a reference to Thor. All of that without dismissing the fact that we are talking about "titans", referencing the giants.

I wanted to learn more about Norse mythology. Ever since I finished watching Vikings, I've been fascinated with learning more about them and their culture. I've watched at least 3 different documentaries now. None of which explained Norse mythology or their God's beyond Odin, Thor, Loki and Freya. Listening to this has been not only informative but intriguing and eye opening as well. I would have never imagined there were stories that could rival the ridiculousness of the Bible. I was very wrong. I will say I have been thoroughly entertained though. Also fun fact. The first time I ever heard of Odin was when I played Final Fantasy VII, as he was one of the summons. At that time I had no idea who he was. Pretty cool to think about a Japanese made game incorporating Norse mythology:)
Hey you! I'm just starting down this path & I wanted to share a cool way to look at those "stories that could rival the ridiculousness of the Bible"
Lessons are taught as lessons today, although lots of lessons are hidden in music, movies, & media...
Now before technology took over, books & tales were how lessons were shared. Now take that another step back, to before language had developed into what it is today & suddenly it makes some absurd ideas make a lot more sense!
Just hear me out for a second...
Here's a weird thought I have about that one Bible verse about two men who lie together.. but using this new perspective...
What if before aids had been discovered & understood; they learned that men who had sex would die more often & made a tale to explain why that was a "sin" to prevent people from doing so
Vikings is very inaccurate to the actual practice as a norse pagan myself I can say do not use Vikings or assassins creed Valhalla for accuracy in depicting notse heathenry read The Poetic Edda. The Pros Edda isn't truly pagan and is written by a Christian where as the poetic is written by pagan folk.
I am a Norse pagan and I appreciate u being respectful of our culture! Their are a lot of comments where it seems people have come just to bash my religion and I am kinda pressed Ngl
@adalienicole4301 of course! Trust me, I know exactly what you mean, I grew up Jewish so I'm no stranger to religion bashing. Personally I think it's sad people can't accept and appreciate others beliefs and practices simply because they are different from their own. I love learning new things and I find other cultures and religions fascinating. :)
I recently discovered your videos and i'm hooked , you made me want to go and buy some greek and norse mythology books so i can go in depth. Thank you very much good sir!
Luv ur name
The music in the first part of the video is beautiful.
Great video...learned something new!
Whats the deal with Norse mythology and the number 9?
-Odin hung from Yggdrasil for 9 days and nights
-9 Realms
-Thor will take only 9 steps before collapsing onto the floor after beeing poisoned by Jormungandr
There are probably more that im forgetting
I'll have two number nines, a number nine large, a number six with extra dip, two number forty fives, one with cheese, and a large soda
9 waves gave birth to Heimdallr
9 maidens sit with Menglöð (Freyja)
There may still be more...
Actually, 9 MOTHERS gave birth to Heimdallr
9 waves gave birth to Aegir
What's with the number nines?!
probably cause they could only count up to 9
Mythology, for most parts, is a metaphor for birth and rebirth. If you take a closer look at Yggdrasil, you might realise that it actually represents the placenta. So, Odin hanging from Yggdrasil represents the process of him being reborn, hence the 9 days should be seen as the 9 months of pregnancy. Same goes for the other mentions of the number 9. It all revolves around birth and rebirth.
8:49 Thor!! Odin's Son! Protector of man kind! Ride to meet to fate! Your destiny awaits!!
Twilight of the Thunder God!!!
Randomly came across this channel......Good stuff!
Just finished GOW Ragnarok and had to get an actual history lesson on Norse mythology. Pretty rad 🤙🏽.
This was a very interesting video. Good amount of information in a reasonable time and I have a new passion for learning more about Norse Mythology.
Must've been some strong weed
Same as in christianity or islam right?
haha yeah
@@zdani1337 This is way more ridiculous and far fetched than either of them
I think you mean strong Liberty caps
Pulse Gamin Freal this sound like some movie they wrote down for entertainment not to be taking seriously
Very limited explenations and you made a few mistakes aswell as missed some ''key'' parts. In particulary about the creation of Mjølnir, Thor's hammer. It wasn't a fly that bit the Dwarven smith, it was actually a bee that stung his eye... And not just any bee, it was Loki who had transformed himself into a bee in order to sabotage the Dwarves work because he was jealous. The hammer was originally ment to be a two handed hammer, but as Loki in disguise as a bee stung the Dwarf's eye, the Dwarf missed his swing and hit the hilt of the hammer, splitting it off. Stories in Norse Mythology are alot of times attempting to shed light on a point, or a ''moral of the story'' so to speak. So the moral behind the story is that Loki's jealousy and his act done out of jealousy only created more problems for himself, because it resulted in the hammer actually being improved, as now Thor was able to throw the hammer as it was no longer a two handed hammer. You also forgot to mention another child of Loki, Sleipnir the eight legged steed, which he gave birth to when he transformed into a horse. (Loki is a shapeshifter.) There are also alot of interesting and funny stories about Thor in Norse Mythology, like about that time when he was tricked into a drinking competition to see if he could shot a mug, but he was unable to... Infact, no one would have managed it, because the end of the mug was connected to the ocean, and no one would be able to drink the ocean dry. Thor obviously didn't know at first when he accepted the bet. Or about that time when he had to dress up as a woman in a dress, to trick a Giant into a staged and fake wedding, so he could reclaim his hammer that this Giant had stolen from him.
Thats hilarious! Makes me want to look up more stories. Thanks for the comment.
Yes, beginners really need to watch/listen to many sources to get the full breadth of Olde Norse. Not many get everything right, but if you put many sources together, you can get very close to everything (i.e. all the correct details and accounts, complete stories, etc).
Exactly. But I have to point out that it's "Mjölnir" and that Þór drank from a horn when trying to beat Útgarða-Loki's games, not a mug. The story of Þór's visit to Útgarða-Loki is great but the video was supposed to be short.
Lokis children as babies
Jormungand:daddy i love eating rats
Fenri:I'll be the best predator
Hell:I'll be your leader
This is really interesting. I first found Norse mythology due to the Thor movie (when it came out, I’ve been loving this stiff for a while) but I’ve recently broadened my sights and have even recently started learning some Scandinavian languages so I can fully indulge myself in these amazing myths
Actually you should be learning icelandic and faroese to come the closest to old norse
@@NemoYT22 I’ve never heard of those and it sounds fucking awesome
This would be incredible to see this Ragnarok happen on tv or film.
J'acob Albers ah..ahem Thorragnarok
@@robertfarkas3865 he said this ragnarok. The MCU's ragnarok was sooooo much inferior compared to this.
An Intellectual Top Hat To be fair if Marvel gave Ragnarok the real universe threatening event it accurately is instead of just the end of Asgard then that would cause such events to loose their appeal before Infinity War.
This is creative, crazy how people could make up such a sophisticated orgin story
@Brock Beckman even if that were the case a huge amount of creativity had to go into the enterprise of mapping lived experience to what essentially is fantasy
DUDE you tell stories so good almost fell sleep
Excellent video my good man, thank you for bringing this knowledge to us.
I’m here cause of the Netflix series “Ragnorok”
Yessss, that series is amaizing
Yep ..waitin on s2
HaychGB im here because i want to learn my culture
Same, just finished it today, waiting for season 2. I had no idea i was going to get so attach to the Netflix series
I thought it was disappointing though, they didn't use the Norse mythology to thicken the plot when there were so many possibilities
As a swede, I fucking love this. I do love the greek mythologies from my childhood, but looking in to the whole Ragnarök-mythologhy as an adult is actually awesome. Got so much around me ya know. And naw, We usually don’t se Loke as an adversary. He’s more like the uncle with bagage. But, Balder. That was low, man. 🤔
Do you actually believe this shit?

Just watched Skillup s review of GOW Ragnarok, he said I should look up Norse Mythology and this vid was top RUclips search. Glad I did, very interesting.
Ymir literally means "big sound". Nearly every name/place/god/dwarf/giant/elf has something like an adjective for a name. Many with pluralistic meanings that still do not contradict each other. Odin-the Mind/spirit/poetry/frenzy. One that wields the power of runes, practice seider, and so on.. (Runes are "words". Amidst technology run amok, the written word remains our species greats achievement.)
The categories allow us to sort them all, and try to understand what the story's mean. Many of the story's hint at a deep understanding of the natural world- far ahead of it's time. Deep concepts of human psychology and pathology are also portrayed.
It doesn't get really get creepy until you realize the story of "Balder" is the story of a man named "the courage" who lives in "Breidablikk". witch means "wide perception". Getting killed by his own brother, named "strife- the blind", and that this heralded the end of the "golden age", the great wolf that's chained by all of the most subtitle of things is emboldening as subtlety flees, and Ragnarok is already under-way.
Mesmerizing and poetic... Subbed!
thanks god of war for getting me intersted on the Greek and norse mytholigies
