    Hi Neil, Great job editing that one! I've only seen 14 of those. Do I win? 😄
    Of those Frank, Dredd, Elephant and 24-hour Party People would be my top films. I'd be interested to see the Koreyoshi Kurahar films and (of course) Night Train.
    The rest (for me) are prime for ♻recycling into something more useful 😆

    Hi - I've seen 34 of these - IMO The Funeral is the finest gangster movie ever made - and Deep Cover is another brilliant film from that decade, a key entry of Black New Wave w amazing Michael Tolkin script - I never see these films discussed - Red Cliff is John Woo adap of a central work from Chinese literature - Blue Sky shows Lange and Jones giving striking performances for the dir of Look Back in Anger - Man Is Not a Bird is striking Yugoslav New Wave - also interesting to see Naruse and Oshima mentioned, tho I haven't seen those - I didn't know Scoffield had done Bartleby -

  • @barrymoore4470
    @barrymoore4470 Месяц назад +1

    Hi, Neil, that was a bewildering smorgasbord of cinematic adventure presented here, with very many titles, and some directors (such as Raffaello Matarazzo), of which I'd never even heard before. I counted fourteen films cited by you that I've seen, which I've listed below, with asterisks appended to those I was lucky enough to see on the big screen:
    --'Mahler'
    --'An American Werewolf in Paris' *
    --'The Subject Was Roses'
    --'The Naked Spur'
    --'The Cheyenne Social Club'
    --'Stan & Ollie' *
    --'Lady Bird' *
    --'Resurrection'
    --'Palm Springs Weekend'
    --'Poto and Cabengo' *
    --'Viva Maria!'
    --'Daughters of the Dust' *
    --'Water' *
    --'The Black Cauldron' *
    I don't own home-entertainment transfers of any of these, but the one that I think I value most as a work of art is 'Daughters of the Dust', a remarkable representation of a too little known culture and place within my own home country of the United States.
    Of the many films you cited that I haven't seen, I am especially curious to experience more of the legacy of Mikio Naruse, and as a great admirer of the Czechoslovak New Wave of the Sixties, I would especially welcome getting to know 'Return of the Prodigal Son'. Thanks for helping to expand my cinematic horizons today!

      Hi Barry. I love this interaction, thanks for taking the time to provide such interesting comments. I thought the mix of films would be fun to present to everyone and see what resonates. I’ve been unfamiliar with Matarazzo also and get the feeling he was considered a misunderstood director so it will be interesting to see. Considering his films are available via Criterion I note on Letterboxd that few have seen them. I’m impressed you saw Poto and Cabengo on the big screen. The Gorin documentaries sound fascinating to me. Resurrection I watched just the other night. And yes, Daughters of the Dust is very poetic and artful. Again, available via Criterion and as I recall it featured on the last Sight & Sound 100 movies of all time. My first experience of Naruse was Sound of the Mountain, which I loved and I’ve only seen a couple of others since then, but many are on the Criterion Channel. Thanks again for watching and commenting

    Great fun idea for a video Neil! I've only seen 18 of these, and own just 11. Both Meanwhile and Fay Grim are on my list to pick up, as I've been tracking down Hal Hartley's films, (no easy task for some reason!), and I've been loving them so far, so hopefully I can get to both before too long. You've certainly piqued my interest with Night Train after hearing your review of it. I think there are a couple blurays, but both are quite pricey and sadly the DVD is OOP, but it's one I'll keep looking out for. Also, I have always wanted to see the cinematic classic, Ice Ice Baby! When I was growing up, there was a guy I knew who always would quote it and loved the film, but I've never had the pleasure.

    • @neilsmoviechannel3199
      @neilsmoviechannel3199  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Warren. Thanks very much for watching and playing along. I thought it was a fun way of presenting the haul as it’s such a mixture. Yes, this has boosted my Hal Hartley collection as I have only seen his first two, The Unbelievable Truth and Trust….For Night Train, I suggested it would be a great fit for Criterion but turns out I should have suggested Second Run as I found out they are actually releasing in September another of Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s films, Pharaoh. The restoration trailer for it looks magnificent, quite an epic by the looks of it….Gotta enjoy a bit of Vanilla Ice, I’ve never actually seen the film so it will be fun to finally catch it. I like the Jim Carrey skit he did of Ice Ice Baby years ago “Stop…while I tie my laces” etc, very funny

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies Месяц назад +1

      Second Run did actually release Night Train on DVD, back in 2013 it looks like, but I think it's long OOP which is a shame. Maybe if a lot of us pick up Pharaoh they'll know there's interest in his other films too, and bring it back! Definitely still a great idea for Criterion though, as great as Second Run are I think they are UK only. Haha yes I love that sketch too, '...nothing rhymes with Winkle..'

    The Subject was Roses was a terrific film. Patricia Neal always delivered compelling performances, including this film. The interplay between the two warring parents was observant and cleverly played out. Just like Hud between Newman and the father Melvyn Douglas with Neal playing the go-between.
    Who is Killing the Chefs of Europe is one classy comedy. I have the Warner Archive release, and throughly enjoy the interplay between the cast. Great shame the film barely gets mentioned or considered. The style of comedy displayed in the film would be marginalised by today's generation for being politically incorrect. Sad reflection for a film that should be known better.

      Hi Dr Impossible. Many thanks for the comments. Good to hear you know The Subject Was Roses as it was a title new to me but exactly, Patricia Neal is always great to watch. Who is killing the great chefs of Europe is one I saw years ago on TV and as I recall I may not have liked it all that much so it will be interesting to rewatch. Black comedies in particular have to strike me in the right mood

      @@neilsmoviechannel3199 I felt the same with The Loved One directed by Tony Richardson. The film takes a significant swipe at the funeral business in 1960s, but then the dark and morbid tone of slight comedy turns into a farce right toward the end. Two separate films with two dividing comedic slants, and you either applaud it or just wonder what the hell was that about....

    I own 12 of these and have seen 11. My favorites that I have seen are The Guest and Bad Time at El Royal. You ought to pick one movie a week for everyone to watch and then let people discuss it in the comments. It might challenge people myself included to watch different things. Maybe pick a movie from tubi, I think most people have access to that, because I know everyone isn't going to own the same blu rays dvds etc.

      Hi. Thanks very much for watching and playing along. Yes, I’m trying with my various haul videos and movie mix reviews (such as the last 10 movies moviewatch video) to talk about a mixture of movies in the hope that whilst not every film will be of interest, maybe one will unexpectedly pique someone’s interest. Tubi and RUclips are great for the variety of movies available that people just want to stream but there can be differences country to country so I don’t always know what’s available where. I’ll definitely be rewatching Bad Time at the El Royale soon. I didn’t really like it on first watch but don’t remember Cailee Spaeny’s role and now that she’s an actress much more on my radar, it makes me interested to revisit the film.
