Being understated is part of the appeal imo. That's what a gentleman is. Who cares what the majority thinks? Watching these videos is totally mesmerising. And the subtleness is a big reason for it, i think. He does things that are seemingly impossible and makes no fuss about it. Like it's nothing. And you sit back thinking what just happened there. He is more of a magician trying to hide his tricks than he's a flashy entertainer trying to make everything bigger. That's why he's underrated imo.

The funny thing is that Laudrup himself has said that he is actually quite temperamental, but that in his youth he was taught not to show it. It's a sort of Nordic cultural tradition to try and always stay calm and not show one's emotions. Who knows, maybe if Laudrup had been born in Italy he would have become more assertive, and maybe, just maybe, an even better player. Even if that's hard to imagine...
I hope Platini gets his way and puts in a salary and transfer ceiling of sorts. It's ridiculous the amount of money is involved in football these days, and when "outside" money comes in, like at Man City, it causes a kind of inflation and everyone else's money loses value. No player is worth 110 mil. Not even Laudrup would be today :-) I really like what Platini does at UEFA. I also hope he gets the 6+5 rule implemented. I think more national identity in the clubs would be a good thing.
Being good isn't a matter of how many tricks you do, it's a matter of your overall impact on your opponents as well as your own team. When Ronaldinho was at his best he was certainly at Laudrup's level and perpaps even slightly better, but Laudrup was a world class player for 16 years. Ronaldinho was for maybe 5, before his level dropped. That's why Laudrup still ranks higher with me than Ronaldinho. But, of course, I'm biased because of my nationality, as I'm sure you are too ;-)

It's ridiculous the amount of money is involved in football these days, and when "outside" money comes in, like at Man City, it causes a kind of inflation and everyone else's money loses value. No player is worth 110 mil. Not even Laudrup would be today :-)
I really like what Platini does at UEFA. I also hope he gets the 6+5 rule implemented. I think more national identity in the clubs would be a good thing.
Being good isn't a matter of how many tricks you do, it's a matter of your overall impact on your opponents as well as your own team. When Ronaldinho was at his best he was certainly at Laudrup's level and perpaps even slightly better, but Laudrup was a world class player for 16 years. Ronaldinho was for maybe 5, before his level dropped. That's why Laudrup still ranks higher with me than Ronaldinho. But, of course, I'm biased because of my nationality, as I'm sure you are too ;-)
