Judas Priest - Mother Sun (Reading 1975, better sound)

  • Judas Priest performing Mother Sun, a track that never made it on any of their studio albums, at the Reading Rock Festival on 22nd August 1975. Only a guitar + vocal demo version was recorded in the studio, and the rights to this recording (along with everything else they recorded with them) were lost when Judas Priest broke their contract with Gull Records in late 1976. Therefore, it is unlikely this demo version will ever surface.
This particular version comes from an alternative source tape, and not from the various bootleg CDs all other versions on RUclips are sourced from. It's seemingly recorded a bit closer to the stage so it better captures the band's playing instead of crowd noise.

    Lyrics:
The liquid sun is pouring out her heart
    To every living thing
And no one cares, but while she's there
    Existence is getting you in
Yet every day, a piece of her is gone
Gone to give, never to return
So she sighs and slowly fries
Cause soon she knows she'll cease to burn
    Mother, mother Sun
Thank you for what you gave us
    Mother, mother Sun
I know that soon you'll leave
    The rays of her
    The Sun will go
    The face of her
    Upon the shore
    And through her eyes
This song's for the hurting sky
    Recoiling in her shining self
She says she's desperately for peace
Then she knows and as anger grows
She starts to swell praying for release
So now her body blasts the sky
    Every age on her face
Then there's born by each shadow
    Trees reflecting into space
    (She's no longer )
    Mother, mother Sun
Thank you for what you gave us
    Mother, mother Sun
I know that soon you'll leave
    The rays of her
    The Sun will go
    The face of her
    Upon the shore
    And through her eyes
This song's for the hurting sky
    Mother please believe me
    If you ever leave me
May it never prove of use
    Sending light
    Since time began
    Through fall of man
    Chaos has been self-inflicted
Now it's too late to talk of fate
At long last the plan has reacted
    Throughout the universe harmony prevails
For every move that you make there is an equal
    For all we have done
For the total of the sum
    Here is the final sequel
    The final sequel(x3)
    Earth shall live no more
    Justice will not arrive
    Fathers must bear witness to
    Destruction, destruction for all eternity
    For every place that's 'neath
    The falling sun
    The age is over
    Before their own soul
    To redeem from a song
That brought an early Fall down
Glistening, shimmering, burning a hellfire sunset
    Mother Sun
Thank you for what you gave us
    Mother Sun
I know that soon you'll leave
    The rays of her
    The Sun will go
    The face of her
    Upon the shore
    And through her eyes
This song's for the hurting sky
    The Sun!
    Oh Sun!
    Mother please forgive me
    Don't you ever leave me...

When I was in high school a friend came back from a summer vacation in (I think) the Bahamas and said he saw JP at a festival there and they sang a song "Prisoner of Your Eyes" that never appeared on any of their albums. I smiled and agreed with him, but didn't actually believe him until a few years later when "Prisoner of Your Eyes" appeared on a special edition of one of their albums.
Anyway, the moral of the story is, all their stuff is awesome aand I hope that, before they finally hang it up, they put out a special collection of all of their unreleased songs.

Already at that time they were able to create some evolving songs with raw and heavy passage. Very cool ! Can you imagine if they had been signed on Columbia right from the start... Rock Rolla would had been a good record and Caviar and Meth and this Mother Sun would have been 2 more classics from the band ! I hope one day we will see some other things !

    • @marcstevens3761

I think they didn't release this because it was a cover. They pretty much stuck to original songs, until Joan's Diamonds. Would have liked to hear the complete Caviar And Meths. Didn't like Alan singing an early version of Victim. They called it Whiskey Woman back then.

    • @fartkerson
      @fartkerson 6 лет назад +7

More like a Queen song -- not really at all Spinal "Tappish" -- although Spinal Tap is partly based upon the Born Again era of Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple as lead singer (in which Sabbath had dictated a small Stonehenge replica be built, but instead a GIANT Stonehenge was built, and a dwarf danced on top of it and fell off -- reverse "Tappish") and Judas Priest's name was inspired by Black Sabbath's name. But really this sounds way more like a Queen song such as "My Fairy King" (in which the lyric 'Mother Mercury' may be directly tied to the title of this track, "Mother Sun") with the layered vocals and higher pitched guitar, as opposed to Tony Iommi of Sabbath's downtuned guitar. Anyway... You must've failed your History of Rock & Roll 1970s/80s class.
