  • Toxic Tuesday: Does the “Sonic Endo” technique make a root canal better?
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being interviewed on the “Be Well By Kelly” podcast (thank you @bewellbykelly). The question arose if “Sonic Endo” technology improves root canal outcomes. I took the opportunity to share what I am sharing in this video today: the roots of teeth are porous! Once your body’s blood supply and nerves within a tooth are removed, your immune system is no longer connected to the dead tooth. Therefore, as microbes from under the gums start to migrate into the porous dentin (see final image in video), your body has no defense against them. Keep in mind that one square millimeter of dentin has approximately 20,000 tubules. That’s millions of tubules in a single tooth! This is why root canal-treated teeth turn dark over time and become filled with microbes. There is no way to defend against the microbial invasion, regardless of how the canal in the middle of the root is cleaned and sealed.
One of the benefits of being in patient care for more than a quarter of a century is that I have seen trends come and go. Every year dental supply and technology companies come out with the “latest and greatest” approach to different procedures. With regards to root canals, I have seen pastes, gels, heated fillers, laser techniques, sonic vibrational approaches, resins, and others used to perform a “better root canal”. My experience has been that they all become loaded with microbes regardless of cleaning and sealing technique.
Keep in mind that a “better root canal technique” is equivalent to a better embalming technique for cadavers. It’s still dead and puts the bone around the tooth at risk no matter how you perform the root canal.

What do you suggest people do if they are still relatively young but have had multiple root canals?
