This non-union tour looks like a good community theatre production.

I really wonder about this review. I totally respect the actors, but we went last night and the rewrite from a writer/director perspective was a mess. It isn't the job of the tour to think about how to make it easier for local and youth theatre to adapt big costumes and sets, they know how to do that on their own, Sweatpants and a bike helmet for donkey is just lazy, leotards and black pants for ensemble??? There are 2800 seats in our theatre at $70-130 per seat (e.g. $238,000 a night)--no excuse for the low budget they gave, not fair to the actors who were giving it and not getting the cut of that money (awesome understudy for Fiona last night too). You can't cut donkey's song, the tap section, or not give a motivation for the Lord F to hate the "freaks." You really have to do your homework on your reviews. It's not Eddie Murphy that he is adapting, its Daniel Breaker. You have to understand the motivation for the songs that were written to review this, for example why there's a broom and a reference to wicked with Lord F? Cause in the original he rises to the top of the castle and lights go green. Have to do your homework, the original is 2 hours on video, just important if your review is called "revamped National tour". that you know what was revamped IMHO,

Completely understand and respect your point of view with this. My intention with these “mini-reviews” of the National tour shows that I see is to ultimately review them as their own thing and as quickly as I can turn it around after seeing the show so everything is fresh. When we do full reviews of musical movies then there is more research put into the previous productions, history, etc. That’s why I always try to put the disclaimer out, like I did in this one, that I’m not a Shrek expert, either the movie or the original Broadway play. I understand that he’s adapting Daniel Breaker from the Broadway show, but Daniel Breaker was ultimately adapting and inspired by the movie and Eddie Murphy’s performance, just like the other performers were. I do appreciate you taking the time to explain your full thoughts and your perspective on the show.

I totally agree with this comment. I just got out of watching the show. The actors did really well and the singing was awesome. But yeah the costumes, set, and just overall “revamp” kind of felt like an “unvamp”. The original is definitely better. Both the movie and the broadway show.

What’s wrong with someone going into a review with a fresh take?? Wouldn’t you want to hear a non bias opinion? He did do his homework, his review just didn’t come out like YOU wanted it to. Did you see the show?

  • @Oneasianpersuasion

This is a nice fresh take, I like that you haven't seen the Broadway musical and can look at this tour without any bias or previous expectations. I saw the Broadway on RUclips and Netflix and even bought the DVD, so seeing this new tour might be a disappointment for me in terms of set, production, and costuming. But I'm sure the actors are doing their best with their performances despite the other setbacks. ❤️

Just saw this live and (as of May '24) they don't use the black suits anymore, I like the new costumes waaaay better than the old ones I saw on Insta with the black suits. Simpler than what some other productions have done, but charming in the right ways, and they feel much more fairytale without the undersuits. The actors now dress in street clothes when acting as storytellers.
The whole cast was phenomenal, Cecily as Fiona made so many vocal stylistic choices (like the sudden belts and growls) that had me in awe and really shows how she's not your typical princess. And OMG her voice just in general, aaaahhh!!! Naphtali as Donkey opted up several times in Forever and made it seem effortless -- and his portrayal of the character was spot on! And Nicholas as Shrek was simultaneously so powerful and so sincere. Especially in Who I'd Be and Words Fail.
People might disagree with me on this, but I actually prefer having the Dragon singer being fully onstage and able to interact with Donkey to having a Dragon puppet.
I wish there would've been much more scenery for Farquaad's castle and Dragon's keep. The simpler set worked for the swamp and travel, though (which is majority of the show). Like, you don't need super elaborate sets for most of the show because the swamp and travel parts are truly focused on the characters.
I did miss the cut songs a lot, because I love the whole soundtrack of the musical and I know that those songs added even more depth to the characters. I honestly wish this phenomenal cast would've had the chance to perform them all, especially for Naphtali to get the chance at Don't Let Me Go after being stunned by his part in Forever!
Even though I had an amazing time at Shrek, I hope that the cutting of the songs that were cut in this production doesn't become standard. The more awesome songs from the original, the better 😊

Saw this production two days ago in Wheeling WV. I also respect the actors and feel they did well considering what they had to work with but this production was a mess; set was amateurish, costuming and makeup was mediocre - all the magic of the story was gone. I saw a tour of the Broadway version about 10 years ago with a friend and it was magical. So I strong-armed my husband into seeing this one. What a huge disappointment. We left at intermission (would have been sooner but didn't want to be rude by climbing over other audience members). We saw a number of other people leaving as well, including a family with 3 children. My husband quipped on the way out "we could have bought a nice meal at Ruth's Chris Steak house for the price we paid for those tickets" lol

Look, I can’t even finish your review because you keep saying how you knew nothing about the original musical. I hated this production SO MUCH. It’s WAY too simplified. Now, I love all the actors and they are very talented and deserve way more. Costuming/ makeup was a MESS. Set was so basic. They cut all the dance numbers. They cut donkey’s song. They cut the dragon’s song and replaced it with a mediocre song. They sucked all the magic out of it. I was so disappointed to take my daughter to see one of my favorite shows and instead got a high school musical.
There is a community theater about 15 mins away that is doing the show next weekend. I am tempted to go and see if their production is better. I should NOT have had to pay $100 per ticket to see a show of this production value. In addition, they had an understudy go on for Fiona and didn’t even inform the audience.
To the actors: you were all wonderful. None of my shade is for you. I am so sad I didn’t get to see you in a full production.

hello! thank you so much for this video -- i'm a big big shrek musical fan but i'm in the UK so i'm not going to be able to see this tour! i do have a question, if you can remember: since the song 'don't let me go' has been removed -- did fiona and donkey still join in at the end of 'who i'd be?' (in the broadway version, fiona reprises a verse of 'i know it's today' and donkey reprises a verse from 'don't let me go' as shrek finishes the song, and i've always liked that three-part-bit between the leads) or was it just shrek solo the whole song?

    • @downoncemorepod
      @downoncemorepod  4 месяца назад +1

Hi! So I remember for a fact Fiona joins in at the end of it and I’m about 80% sure that donkey joins in at the end too so you still have that three-part-bit! Like I said, I’m not 100% confident it’s all three, but I’m pretty sure!

Ime sorry, but everything i have seen about this production is shit, especially when they make it that cheap and crap. Like i have seen 2 fantastic amateur productions off it, with WAY!!!! Better costumes and a full shrek costume and mask, just like the Broadway produktion.
And the fact they they made lord farquard tall, just ruins the jokes about him... they took them out because off the snowflakes out thete....
Oh and I mention, they had a full dragon puppit...
If i went in to see thst production, i woud demand a refund like a karen, and ime not a karen.
