Keith Richards revealed that Charlie personally anointed the band’s new drummer, Steve Jordan, to be his replacement in the event he could no longer perform. ♪♫♪
Steeve Jordan is an amazing drummer and was recommended by Charlie himself, but he doesn't sound like Charlie and nobody can sound like him. He was unique and such a humble man.
Something that just caught my eye....no in-ear monitors. No ear plugs. Just good old-fashioned monitors beside and behind him, hearing his drums, the beat. NO CLICKS to play to. Just Charlie's own perfectly imperfect timing laying the beat of every Stones tune.
THANK YOU MARTIN SCORSESE for giving us a view/vantage point of the GLUE that held together The Rolling Stones through all those years... a vantage point where there is no distraction by the ornaments of Mick and Keef, blessed as they be.
I so love to watch him playing and I am more than happy that I've seen them, when he was still there. Such a huge band, such big concerts and yet you could fit his gear in a medium sized family van. That's all he needed
Somehow it works? But as a drum teacher for all ages from as young as 4, it's really frustrating to watch someone play like this... at least he can pull it off because he is Charlie Watts after all!
It's interesting to play this way. I'm used to playing the 'regular' way but switching to this affects the timing of the backbeats and the hi hat, which tweaks the groove a bit. With all the different cymbal variations out there, I'm actually surprised that this option isn't used more frequently.
Yeah, I'm not a drummer but this is so cool and I think that affects the sound a lot, hi hats don't do a "mess", snare is more present and more audible, while along with hi hats it sounds more noisy... my opinion.
Those weird UFIP china’s, 18” UFIP flat ride, old 17” Zildjian crash, A custom hats from the 70’s, a Rogers hi hat stand from the 60’s, Gretsch kick and toms and a DW wood snare. Charlie could have played any kind of kit. He had a warehouse full of kits he collected over the years. But this was his comfort zone kit. I love that he was like that.

Swing and a miss with that one. He naturally played that way, it worked for him and the Stones were groovin, There's commentary out there from guys like Jim Keltner, Steve Jordan and Kenny Aronoff about this way of playing and how it affects the feel of things - but nothing about how it's substandard or wrong somehow...
Charlie was not a technical drummer but he had his special touch, and was a VERY Big part of Stones sound. Just listen to Mick and Keith solo works and you will understand what I mean... Or even their last tour with Steve Jordan... I can't tell you why exactly, but even with my eyes closed, I know immediately that's not Charlie behind the drums...
Without Charlie it's not the Stones anymore, he was the engine of the band, as precise as a Swiss watch!
And yes we have his soundalike a.k.a. Steve Jordan.
No he is not
Charlie is not about precision, it's about rolling and feeling

YES! 😮
One of the all time greats!!
"Perfectly imperfect timing"..
Best definition of Charlie's genius I've heard 👍
Never have I seen Charlie Watts behind an enormous drum kit. Yet. He got all that sound from a kit that you see him using here. What a legend.
THANK YOU MARTIN SCORSESE for giving us a view/vantage point of the GLUE that held together The Rolling Stones through all those years... a vantage point where there is no distraction by the ornaments of Mick and Keef, blessed as they be.
Amen to that!!
His professional layout when he is drumming is so smooth
True❤ But here is my version as a storry teller:" He will always be a star, remember his inner light shining so brieght in the darkest skys"
One of the… if not THE… greatest. Never a show off, never trying to be fancy, just pure groove and precision
Charlie Watts was a cool dude. It's exactly his fragmented, but yet strong beat, which gave The Stones their original sound.
Interesting that you said fragmented. I noticed those little skips he does with his right hand.
Perfect touch, perfect feel...
Charlie was a BIG part of Stones sound.
I love watching old concert footage and the blank board looking stare he had on his face always made me laugh and smile. What a badass
Only if "blank board" actually translates to focus, dedication and integrity!!! ♪♫♪
A reason for that met be the fact that he didn’t like playing rock music. He was primarily a jazz drummer
I so love to watch him playing and I am more than happy that I've seen them, when he was still there. Such a huge band, such big concerts and yet you could fit his gear in a medium sized family van. That's all he needed
As a bass player I can tell you that I would have loved to play with Watts. Vastly underappreciated.
One of the coolest drummers ever
Look at that. Pure class.
the coolest to ever do it ...
A man at work - a master of his craft
A human groove, pocket drumming metronome machine! RIP Mr. Watts!
He actually plays behind the beat.
@@JamesG1126 Yes he did. And I'm sure it was totally by design. It helped give the Stones their vibe and groove.
Very cool!
A much more enjoyable perspective than a front view with Mick's endless preening and flouncing around.
Iconic. Nothing more to add.
Charlie Watts nuff said.
Always holding that right hand back on the snare hits

I used to know someone who played like this. Drove me nuts lol. That’s Charlie’s thing!

Great video, great playing by Charlie
He played the drums like spreading butter on toast. His sound just got in your bones, man.
I totally agree. My first stones album was
12X5

wow..so nice....drummin as it should be...simple and direct.
I love his fills here. His playing is a lovely bunch of bones to layer all that beautiful musical murk on top of. The Roiling Bones.
Charlie watts always had the best seat remember that god bless!
Sitting in with Charlie!!!!!
Dearly❤ Charly, we miss you so much!
Charlie was the Stones period.
Girls have periods.
It's full stop.
Learn proper English.
The best drummer ever.
Such a great video. Great to see the Stones in concert from Charlie's POV. Fantastic!
What a great view. Thanks for posting!
Miss you Charlie.....you were the best guy ever!
He was amazing.
Charly Watts had it all! I remember a graffity in Vienna it was about toilet paper...which was gone a quote from Charly . People loved him and me too!
So effortless
Thank you for this amazing video!!
banging away! much love Charlie
@Sound&Vision is there any chance you can upload more Charlie-Cam videos from the Shine a Light Movie? I could watch the entire concert like that...
No Charlie, no Stones. RIP
The best of the best
Professor Charlie.
That blinking at 2:50, he was the best
Looks like he was winking at someone, acknowledging the fact his drumsticks hit each other.
The King of Kings

Super grandpa of za drums. Za teacher!!! R.I.P. Teacher!
this guy always had great time.
El mejor batería de la historia y además un ilustre del jazz
Charlie's energy and feel..and quirkiness...he just bangs it out..and doesn't get overly pushy..good give n take...is whats needed..

Man, I luv this perspective as a mysicician.
, myself, ty.....
How underestimated that guy was !
RIP..... love you charly
Pure class
R.I.P the best engine created by God.
THANKS CHARLY.
we all might think that the Rolling Stones are all about Mick and Keith. but when Charlie Watts passed away, The Stones lost 50% of their power
Super cool perspective
Legend
Formidable !!!!
He was economical. No wasted motion. No clutter.
Tempo y contundencia lo que necesita el baterísta en una banda de Rocanrrol!
Shudder called it quits after Charlie died. But. Life goes on.
Last gentleman. R.I.P.
SACRED DRUM MONSTER!!! SOVEREIGN!!!
Iv noticed Charlie was a no frills drummer. Small setup and awesome timing
Estava procurando vídeos onde só aparece o baterista!
Charlie era un metrónomo humano.
RIP Charlie
Charlie doing, Jerry Allison! Love the Stones, but ya can't get away from Buddy Holly and ghe Crickets!!!
Charlie
❤❤❤🎉
Charlie's just lookin' forward to getting back into the changing room for a quiet cup of tea.
Anybody know what crash he's using above the hats?
He loved UFIP chinas - might be one of those
This sounds like one of those ”shreds” videos
Myslím si, že podle Charlieho bubnování vyrobili první metronom :) Jeho bubnování je přesné jako švýcarské hodinky :)

It’s like Watts is conducting as much as drumming.
Grandi Ufip!
Puro e simples
音を極限まで濁さないプレイ😭
Stay out the camera view 😖
Usa los China al revés
fun stuff but awful mix
His right hand pauses during the snare note not a great drummer. Sorry to say. Busted Charlie!!

99% of Rolling Stones covers have better drummers.
That's by design, dude
You thought that was a musical criticism hahahahahaa
Perfect drummer for the Stones but all in all overated drummer.

Overrated..lol. Respected by all drummers.
