Love your video! I just wanted to add that there is review in most mastery based programs. Math U See for instance, which is the most mastery based math program I know, introduces a lesson for a couple of days and then gently reinforces previously learned concepts for the rest of the week in addition to continued practice of the new concept. Primary Mathematics (Singapore Math) sort of spirals through concepts in a mastery kind of way by spending a couple of months on each concept and introducing a certain depth of a layer before moving on. Primary Mathematics also has 1-3 review practice tests at the end of each segment which bring back previously taught concepts. So I think that the myth that mastery programs never review previously taught concepts is just that - a myth :-).
We found Dr. Shormann through Colleen too and have loved it. My daughter did Shormann through Calc 2 and then transitioned seamlessly to Calc 3 at an in person college for dual enrollment. He teaches math skills, but also note-taking and study skills, which have been so incredibly valuable.
Hello. Both my sons have been doing Shormann Math for the last two years. My oldest is now enrolled in dual credit and I feel Dr. Shormann taught him more than just math. We love it and have recommended it to friends. Thank you for the great review!
Since you're doing Shorman, I'm now considering it for next year. Not trying to be flattering, but I really respect your opinion on homeschool. Thank you for sharing!
I am forever grateful for Colleen for sharing Shormann Math. When the pandemic hit, we were Math hunting... I think we went through 5 or more Math programs before finding Shormann Math. It was almost the end of the school year when we started and I started with Pre-Algebra for my 8th-9th grader. Just so everything is refreshed. Plus they give sibling discounts. ❤
Yes! Thank you so much for your review. It’s so good to have an idea of what options I’ll have for high school. We’re only in third grade right now, but I know it’ll be here before I know it!
We use Saxon for our 5th grader and just started Dive with Dr. Shorman we LOVE it soooo much! My son takes so many notes and now loves doing math. I don’t think we would have know about it if you didn’t talk about it, so thank you!
This video is so timely for me. My oldest is starting high school next year, and I’ve been looking for math options. (Also, I totally cracked up when you took a sip of coffee then remembered the word you were looking for. 😂) Thank you for your time in making this video. It’s very helpful, and I appreciate it so much.
My daughter is in the same situation. She did Algebra 1 and did well until she hit a wall mid year. We both think she would benefit from doing algebra again and I like what I'm hearing about the integration of geometry and tying it into biblical principles, the larger why of why math is important.
It is such a gift to find something that works and you are super confident about. Going into our 4th year, I feel like things are working great for one child and love the options we chose for him (one of which was math, and he said he loves his program. FINALLY!), and I’m struggling with getting things done with my 10th grader. His schedule is really difficult, taking 2 classes daily outside of the home on top of marching band practice 3 days a week. Anyway, I’m more worried about the oldest one 😬, but we are powering through. I’m sure, looking back in 10 years, I’ll see that what we’re doing now, through the struggle, really isn’t that bad 😊.
One of your videos led me to shoreman math for my 7th grader and it has been great for her. She does think it is paced a little slow, but she does an extra lesson on the days that go real easy for her. We will probably start dive science next year also, since math is going so well.
We are starting this year with a pre-algebra, coming from Good and Beautiful, as well as my two older kiddos starting Calculus--I'm interested to see how they do coming from Math U See. You're the only one I've ever heard about this curriculum from. Our internet was so bad last year we couldn't make the jump, but YAY for speedy internet and moving into new math territory.
My son has been using teaching textbooks for a few years and he was doing really well till algebra one. I ended up having to download the textbook and teach him every lesson myself. I am so grateful for you being completely honest about your children's progress it helped give me peace about switching my son over to shormann.
Thank you so much for posting this review. Now that I know we are homeschooling through at least middle school, I am starting to freak out over making sure I have a plan in place for those years to set us up for high school success!
I have never heard of Shormann Math before, so glad to hear about it. Might consider it. Glad other math curriculums are finally getting reviews. Tired of hearing about all the same ones al the time. 😊
This is really helpful looking ahead. My oldest is the same age as your youngest and is also using TGATB. With math 7 and 8 (prealgebra) coming out soon from TGATB, when do you anticipate you'll switch to Shormann for her? I've heard Math 6 can easily transition to prealgebra so wasn't sure if I should spend the additional time with TGATB. I hope that makes sense :) thanks! -Heidi
Ashlee oh my goodness you just helped me so much!!!! I did not realize about the sibling discount! Or that jt was so significant! I still have yet to purchase an official curriculum for my son this year for science so I just went check out the earth science with sibling discount and I will be able to purchase it this weekend! Thank you soooo much , I can’t believe I had missed that!
Oh sweet! We use Shormann. I didn’t realize that about the sibling discount! Nice! My son likes me to print out the “textbook” which is around 300 pages, however, I think it is a good option. He is a paper/pencil kinda guy and likes to take notes. Also, we have to save our “schoolwork” for two years as per our division rules so it is justification for what he has done.
What HAD you been using previously? Just curious. We will wrap up Alg 1 Saxon (3rd edition) by end of May. I'm considering Shormann Alg 2 so he can finish the Alg 2 and Geometry credit.
He sounds exactly like your hubby!!! 😂 thanks for this! We are looking to switch for next year!! My oldest is starting 8th grade and we want to switch from the same one you were using. Also. What are your thoughts on the 8th grade LA with Good and the Beautiful? I know it is a book study. I’m wondering if I should do more for that? Thoughts? Thanks so much for sharing Ashlee!!
Sorry this a little long (soooo appreciate this video!!!) You mentioned about the time (Shormann) -- "working on math for 1.5-2hrs then they should stop. We've never really had that problem but a few times, and I just want them to finish the lesson." 🌟This is what Dr. Shoremann recommends time wise, so how much time on average do you think your children are doing math 4x/wk (off for Fun Fridays still?)? •6th & 7th: 1 Hr •8th & 9th: 1 Hr-1 Hr 15Min •10th & 11th: 1-1.5 Hrs •12th: 1.5-2 Hrs I think time has been my only hesitation with going with this program because I don’t want my children doing math more than an hour per day. I use to be a math TA and tutor, so I know math shouldn’t take a very long time if the concept is taught well. Last couple questions… Are there days they are finishing up a lesson if they are doing math 4x/wk? Wondering because an average school year for most states (I know yours doesn't have this requirement) is 36wks, & 4 days week would be 144 days. Then you mentioned there are 100 lessons. Are there quarterly, end of semester, or final exams for the courses? This could add to the amount of days. Thanks for your help with this! I have watched their sample videos and read their information online, but just needed a little more info (like this video) for understanding. 🔬Would ❤️ a video like this for BJU Press Distance Learning Science + lab courses 😁 Thank you again!!! 🤗
Really appreciate this. How much “reading” is there for students who struggle with reading? Does one have to print things often? Is it multiple choice? If a student gets the answer incorrect after all the tries, is there an explained solution or just a reference to where the answer is found? Thanks again!
i’m so glad you did this video. my daughter is taking this exact class this year. this is her first year homeschooling and she was in all honors classes, but she’s having some trouble following him. i’ve been wondering if it’s because possibly the public schools doing things differently. just curious your thoughts if you wouldn’t mind.
Definitely due to public school! Give it more time and slow down when needed. Reach out for help if it’s still not clicking. But yes public’s school exit into homeschool is hard no matter what grade
We have had the same experience with Shorman Math! What an answer to prayer! I also have a 6th grader currently in TGATB Math 6, are you figuring Math 7 will be released in time or do you use something else between TGATB and Shorman for 7th?
can you print out assignments and do them apart from the computer? (I understand that you would have to manually enter your answers into the computer once you finish)
If you had upper elementary kiddos knowing what you do now with Shormann would you have used a different curriculum? I have 4th and 5th and I want to use Shormann come 8th grade (ish) we switched to TT this year because we are PCSing overseas and I wanted to have more time to do all that jazz BUT I’m not sure (even with it “skipping” my kiddos a grade level up) that it’s going challenge them. It’s still review at 30+ lessons in… In your research if you still had a younger one in elementary would you switch to Saxon to make the transition smoother or have you found any other curriculums that would be a complimentary elementary/middle school option? Thank you! Your channel is sooooo helpful to me 👍🏼 thumbs up all the way! I’ll be looking out for more of you middle grade videos. Can’t believe next year I’ll have a 6th grader!!!!
I would never use teaching textbooks again, I have a video on my channel on why and it’s called math update. I made the mistake with my oldest and never did it again with my others
We tried Shorman based on your recommendation and it has been awful....it is supposed to be Algebra 1 and he is jumping all over to Trig to Calculus to who knows what in the first few months...hate that we wasted our money ;(
Love your video! I just wanted to add that there is review in most mastery based programs. Let me clarify, what I meant was mastery programs review less than spiral learning method based programs. 💗
I know that some of your children use TGTB math. Do you believe TGTB has prepared them well enough to move onto Shormann?
Wondering the same thing. Thank you!
Hello. Both my sons have been doing Shormann Math for the last two years. My oldest is now enrolled in dual credit and I feel Dr. Shormann taught him more than just math. We love it and have recommended it to friends. Thank you for the great review!
“My brains not working today… I need a drink”
**Sips yummy looking coffee**
“MASTERY!”
Lol loved that
😂
Since you're doing Shorman, I'm now considering it for next year. Not trying to be flattering, but I really respect your opinion on homeschool. Thank you for sharing!
Thankyou! This means alot to be, to be a trusted source!
I am forever grateful for Colleen for sharing Shormann Math. When the pandemic hit, we were Math hunting... I think we went through 5 or more Math programs before finding Shormann Math. We love Shormann too! Third child will be using soon. Both high schoolers are using it, including my senior!

I remember telling you about this! We love Shormann Math! He is such a great teacher! ❤️ thanks for sharing I know it will help others. Blessings

We're on our 2nd year of Shoremann Math for my 8th and 9th grader and we've been loving it!! 🤩🤩

We love Dive!! We switched this year to Saxon to prepare our kids for Shorman (my kiddos are upper elementary)! So excited to see your review!
Thank you for this video! My oldest is currenting doing TGTB Math 6 and I've been considering Shormann math because of you.
We are loving Shormann! It has taken some getting used to but it will definitely be our go to for math.
Great info for future reference!! ❤ Thanks for the review.

No problem 😊
This was very thorough Ashley.

I’ll evaluate once math 7 releases for her. Can’t say yet!
I LOVE HOW THE COFFEE HELPED YOU REMEMBER "MASTERY" LOL

Where do you find the “textbook” to print?
Thank you for this video! 😁😁😁
You are so welcome!
This makes me so excited for high school! I love that they overlap Geometry with Algebra.
Me too!
Are you kidding me? I just searched your channel yesterday for a video on this!! Yay!!!
No way! Love how God does that!
We found Shorman for our oldest through you and love it! 🎉
Makes me so happy 😊

We use Shorman for my oldest in 8th grade. I didn’t know about the sibling discount! That will be amazing!
It's so good!
Sorry this a little long (soooo appreciate this video!!!)
You mentioned about the time (Shormann) -- "working on math for 1.5-2hrs then they should stop. We've never really had that problem but a few times, and I just want them to finish the lesson."
🌟This is what Dr. Shoremann recommends time wise, so how much time on average do you think your children are doing math 4x/wk (off for Fun Fridays still?)?

How much “reading” is there for students who struggle with reading?
Does one have to print things often?
Is it multiple choice?
If a student gets the answer incorrect after all the tries, is there an explained solution or just a reference to where the answer is found?
Thanks again!
Can you compare to Denison Algebra I? Thank you

if my son is current 8th grade using teaching textbooks pre algebra.....do you recommend pre algebra shormann math for ninth grade??
How long is the average video/lesson for Algebra 1...also, is there not a 'answer guide' or parent answers to help them with problems?
Watch my most recent video
So funny how your brain immediately started working again as soon as you sipped your coffee.😂 ❤️
So true!🤣😅
Thanks for the video ! I have a question. We are using Abeka grade 7. I would like to try Shormann but don’t know which algebra should we start on?
They have assessments on their website to help
Is it all done on the computer or is there a book to purchase and work from as well?
All computer but can print what’s needed for physical sheets
Is Shorman accredited?
Mastery programs don't mean that you never do it again once you learn a concept. Math u see is a mastery program and there's a ton of review!
Thank you so much for making this, Ashlee!!🫶
You're so welcome!
