- Just got a new Dell PowerEdge 2950 III with 2 Xeon Quad-Core @ 2.3Ghz, 1333Mhz FSB, 4GB Memory, four 15K RPM SAS Hard Drives, and a DRAC 5 Card.
Decided to give a little tour of the hardware for people unfamiliar with rack mount servers and how they fit everything in there.

Yea I imagine they just swap out the components, since making a solid base for multiple servers is a good idea.
I love how you can change the LCD display from the Server Administrator console, nice touch lol.
We used a 2950 for our web server and were quite happy, great value for the cost when we purchased it in 2010.. (And still runs fine)

That one as configured was around $3500 without the OS. But this model starts around $1800 if you can live with out the fancy hard drives... I got one PE2950 for as low as $1600 shipped when it goes on sale and you don't want a lot of extras. Just check our Dell's website and play with the configuration tool. (Use the Small/Medium business section cause they seem to have sales and promo's more often)
The chassis looks exactly the same as the new Dell NF500 NAS we just installed lol.
Absolutely amazing piece of kit, had it up and running in 30mins, and serving files within an hour.
I think we are gonna grab a 2950 for our new PDC when we migrate it to new hardware. I assume its just as rugged as all the other Dell servers? We have 9 now and every single one is great.
Did yours come with the metal bezel? I think thats a really good decision by Dell to go back to the metal bez!

Yeah they have those new size racks. Though they're very handy, especially for hooking up the power supply won't cost you any U's.
You can't really compare laptops and servers. Servers don't have lcd screens, 3d video cards, a bunch of ports for connecting things, wifi, card readers, sound card, etc... All the money goes into processor, memory, and storage... and you only need so much of those 3 things for any given application. Also, you usually buy more than one of these... one for each application / type of server. One standard rack can hold more than 30 of these... so it's nice that they aren't too expensive.
Dell uses the 2950 platform for some of it's other products. We bought a "Windows Storage Server" from them that wound up being a 2950 with the special OS on it. I'm pretty sure the NF500 like that.
The bezel is included, but they take like $30 off the price if you don't want it.
Great video! I just got a PE 2970, basically the AMD equivelant of yours. I configed it with dual 2.6GHz six-core procs :D I have a video, I just need to edit and upload to youtube. Ill do that tonight. NICE SERVER!
@adamsb33 the dell remote access card is embedded on the motherboard.

thanks for the info on the dual power supplies. i just got 8 poweredge's for free from a law firm, and want to sell them, but wanted to know what i am talking about before making a deal, so thanks for the info

Just noticed also that you said the rails never fitted your rack! I have the exact same problem with the NF500.
What rails did you get to fix the problem? The hooks hang out the back on the Dell supplied ones.
What's the background ambiance there? I can hear something in the background, yet the server's off?

lol dell propriatary rail wont work with dell servers ... mega lol ... but nice overview of the server man :D gotta love those sort of hardware
@KDCvideos Hi - Thanks for the video. Just wondering towards the end you mentioned about 'Dell remote access card'. I bought the same from eBay for 1075. I can see there is a blocked port at the left hand corner at the back (Possibly that ethernet port you mentioned). Does that mean that this is not available in my server?
Hi KDC: I bought one of those from ebay about a few months back with 16GB memory, Xeon quad core processor. Its running fine and I love this server. It came with 2 300 GB SAS hd. There are 4 empty slots. Cost me around 1000 AUD. I do not have RAID configured at this stage - got 2 logical and physical drives. I am wondering can I configure RAID only for the REST of the 4 slots? That is leaving the two as they are?
May be thats a stupid question but I am quite newbie. :)
I cant find anything about how servers work, I Need to speed up my animation rendering (3dsmax>vray) and I have found a load of dual xeon servers on ebay for cheap, What would I need to get one of these (just for rendering) or is it way to complicated to set one of these up for personal use?
I have a Dell power edge 2300 with two 9.00 gb harddrives 1gb of ram and windows nt 4.0.
Fuck I wish I could work in a datacenter instead of managing damn cloud instances :'( That would be so fun!

can these be configured to be a normal computer? if so i want one must be so powerful. what is its Energy Consumption (watts)?
I use the fixed PE2950 rails from racksolutions(dot)com because the dell ones have this part that sticks out and does not let our rear door close.
How much did one of those server's cost?

holy shit, they sell for $300 barebones now!
heat sinks, fans , transformers, more heat to dissipate ... servers are a totally mess of power (and losses).
There are some on eBay that are very much cheaper:

I have that exact server and there is something that is baffling me.
There is an internal USB port near the raid control board and next to the cable coming from the DVD drive.
Far as I am aware (and as little info as the net or other tech friends seem to know jack about it) that you could load up an OS onto a drive and boot from it there.
I just want to know what its there for and what can I do with it?
Seems the simplest questions are the hardest to answer.
Anyhow, nice basic run through on the server. I'm happy with mine and for the price of $163.07, I made out like a bandit.
run ESXi / VMWare on it.
You can use it for storing your boot partition if you are using a software raid array or ZFS as a root file system.
I just got one of these off ebay for $56.00 in perfect working order.

The PERC card is not a PERC 5 it is a PERC 6
