Hi guys, for those wondering about the noise level of rack servers I can say this from experience. Older servers like this are generally very loud with hp servers being the loudest by far. Newer servers really are not that bad unless you are running full racks of them or if they are 1u form factor (smaller fans have to spin really fast) the bigger 4u units are actually fairly quiet because of the 120mm fans inside. Anyways nice video Morten keep it up !
The Adaptor on the back is an interposer for SATA To SAS conversion. Apparently it helps with SAS commands, RAID etc. Not sure how true that is, but for enterprise, I've brought a few before.
HI +Phillip Ireland It is a weird thing right ,,, I read some where that on the Dell PE 2950 III they are not needed,,but that was the servers that had them. Thank you for watching! :-)
The 2650's are VERY loud even at their lower fan speeds. Dell really optimized that when they went to the R710. It's MUCH quieter. Glad that the power supplies were the only problem for your old servers giving you 4 working servers to sell plus some small CPU and RAM upgrades for your spare parts bin.
HI +Tear Spacer Are you sure you want this big a server for that? It's Big, noisy and power hungry :-) It,,might also be cheap :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) Mainly getting it because it is cheap, can't find anything else that has 6 hdd bay and quad cores for $100 so this server is the one in my budget. Plus it would be good for like random vm testing as i don't have anything to try that one at the moment
Hi +hughgarsehotmail HeHe I'd go for the HP too,,of the two! but both is spar parts for my IBM/Lenovo :-) Just making fun.... Thank you for watching! :-)
Wise of you keep them far away from Brazil, a client of mine have two of them, oh boy, if there is a way to something go wrong, then they will do it. I usually say that they are with "enconsto" (I doubt that you will undestand what I mean ^^)
Thanks for another great video Morten! I have 2950s with x5450 processors, I know, I know, you don't like them very much, but they seem to work fine for my storage servers. Do you think they would be good enough for some virtualisation? I guess you will tell me to go Lenovo! BTW the SAS controller works with SATA drives. I use it instead of the PERC for ZFS RAID. Anyway, thanks for doing a 2950 video!! eric
Hi +epd807 Yes You NEED a x3650 M1 :-) It is the same at an Dell PE 2950,,, I would think you can install VM ware ESXi 6.0 on a Dell like that... Blah blah,, I'll do that video,, I need to format the disks anyway,, and i have four servers to practice on. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi, i have a DELL PowerEdge 2950 II and i got two Xeon E5320 1.86GHz quad CPUs in it. I host a Minecraft server on it and sometimes i feel it helds back the game. Will the performance be much better if i upgrade to two Xeon X5365 which is the best CPU's i can have in it? I saw a comparison between them and they looked very similar to each other. But then the actual question is: Do you think the 3.0GHZ of the Xeon X5365 will be a good upgrade to prevent the slowdowns and increase the performance? Thanks
Well,,, I would recommend you to change out the server,, If you put in two X5365,, this server is out of options,, so if those two are not enough, You will have to do something else anyway. I always recommend IBM x3650 M1 (7979) There are two versions,, one of them can use the Intel Xeon 5400 series, and that is the one to get. You get more processing power for a lot less power use... But sure you get more processing power out of a X5365 then E5320,, I think about 30-40% more. Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse Thank you so much for your reply. I checked out that IBM server, and if i buy two new x5365 it will be more expensive than buying that IBM server with better CPU's. I think the best choise is to get a seccond server and just use the 2950 as a FTP server or something. Thank you, i love your videos :-)
HI Games To Tuts Get a second server, install it with VMware ESXi 6.0 runs like a dream on a IBM x3650 M1 on that you can install 10 Minecraft servers and a ftp server +windows servers, linux servers. If you have enough RAM (MAX is 48GB) you can run 100 different servers or client OS. In this video I run 15 Server 2008 on 6GB of RAM on a IBM x3650 M1. When you are running sell that Dell,,, you really do not need it. :-) buy more RAM. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi Cannon Burton Thanx,, It is a lot of work,, and I'll have to be Increasingly picky of what i answer and how much,, the answers has become a bit shorter. I have more videos on rendeing on my channel,, do a search for "3D MAX" on my channel :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
good job... i have same server :my first: it stopped working when i tried to rig up a ideo cards i cut qith a grinder wheel,, it fit,,, but then the server stopped wqorking,,, any ideas?? only lights up blink amber light in back sidemm green blinking lights in mother bopard and dracmmm help?
I'm having a hard time finding info on this server. I got one given too me and was trying to find out what ram and max it can take. Also whats the max size hard drive?
I just got a dell 2950 gen 2 to play around with because they are pretty inexpensive. I installed xenserver to virtualize after watching your videos about virtual servers. Sad to see you selling them but you can't keep everything. I would have loved to see you do a compare video just to see how they stack up against your other servers.
Hi +Joshua Corley Well I must admit, that I did loos some love for them,,when they died for me :-/ I have four more for sale :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
I have one of these servers with a single crappy CPU (forget the model number, but its pretty low end), Its got 4 146gb 15K RPM SAS drives, but unfortunately while taping down the chasis intrusion switch i bricked the SAS controller! Once i get the money ill be replacing the SAS controller and adding a couple better CPU's. It will probably replace my current rendering workstation if the CPU performance is better. Even though its old, certainly can function if you need it to!
You know for an inexpensive but powerful server array, I would buy as many E5-2670 chips (they are SUPER CHEAP now) and build a ton of supermicro systems (or something else).
Hi +Mark Pashmfouroush Yes I have also noticed that the E5-2670 is well priced :-) I am dreaming of a IBM/Lenovo x3650 M4 to run a beast like that. Thank you for watching! :-)
+Mark Pashmfouroush Issue is that EVERY lga2011/x79 board is basically quadrupled in price now! So the money you save on the chip is way less than the extra price of the board
well I like your videos, as you play with many things, which I play with AI do not have any "real" servers, but I have loads of enterprise computers parts 3ware, Adaptec, Arista, Avago, Brocade, Broadcom, Chelsio, Cisco, Dell, Emulex, Endace, Extricom, Finisar, HP, Huwaei, Infortrend, Intel, IBM, Juniper, Lacie, Lenovo, LSI, Mellanox, NetApp, NetXen, Panasonic, Promise, QLogic, Sandisk, Seagate, Silicom, Startech, Sun, Teradici I may be missing some This include 10GbEs, Access Point managers, AOC, ByPass NICs, Fibre Channel, FCoE, GbEs, iSCSI, NVME adapters (along SAS HBA), KVMs, PBX, QSFPs, RoCE, routers, SAS, SFPs, storages, SSDs, switches, ThunderBolt Adapters (to FC), XFPs etc I do play with those as well
i have 4 1950s, theyre not the best but i love having them, i need to make a use for them, get them all fully set up(buy a full size rack not a network rack i got for free) and make some xenapp videos.
Yeah the 1u version, i got 4 with 12gb ram and two quad cores, in each, for cheap. I also got an old dell Powervault (mini sas) 12 disk array with it all. Its very loud :D
Hi +newrhea13 Sorry,, I did do that, but cut it out of the video,,, I tend to make the videos way to long,, so try to take out,,minor things. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi I do not care that much about the noise,, they are a bit away from me,, I can't recall ever having a Fujitsu,, are they any good? Thank you for watching! :-)
Well, for me my old fujitsu is good :D altho it cant stay on 24/7 because of the noise AND it draws a load of power. 1 blade powered on + the blade center = 200+ watts. But thats because the blade center is also fully equipped with 2 12 port ethernet switches, 2 mamagement modules, 2 fan modules, 1 KVM module, and 4 2100 watt power supplys. That's why it draws so much power. But for the rest it's pretty good, at least i think this server would be efficient if every slot would be filled up and running. So yes, fujitsu is pretty good in a professional environment (wich i dont have).
HI beaker15 I become so clever readin comments :-) The Adaptor on the back is an interposer for SATA To SAS conversion. Apparently it helps with SAS commands, RAID etc. :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my previous comment which I accidentally deleted. (I watch RUclips on my iPhone 4, it is super slow and unresponsive so I didn't notice i had hit the delete Button accidentally.) the comment was about the purpose of the SAS/SATA interposer. I think I figured out what it's for. SAS is supposed to supply 12, 5 and 3.3 volts to the power connector. It is probable that 3.3 volts is not supplied to the SAS connector on this server as this voltage is used by very few drives. I managed to find a pinout of the SAS connectors on another sever docs.oracle.com/cd/E28853_01/html/E28855/z40022311288274.html and it shows the 3.3 volt lines as being "not supported". The interposer probably converts either the 5 or 12 volt lines to 3.3 volts. Not sure Why dell would supply 3.3 volts to SATA but not SAS. Maybe 3.3 volts is more common on SATA drives or maybe as as I suggested in the previous video dell is simply selling the boards to make some extra money and only put the power supply on so they couldn't get in trouble for false advertising. Thanks again for replying to my comments. keep up the awesome videos. (:
+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) You can actually cut the back bit of the PCIe slot itself (Only the plastic part, do not damage the pins) in order to fit a full length PCIe card.
HI martin borovansky Like I do in this video : ruclips.net/video/b572zty-GLg/видео.html On a IBM x3650 M2 But I'd Like a real one,,still :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi +Default RUclips Channel Ahh that is building foam,,, that comes with the blouse,, or rather it is an add on, i have added doing some work on my house :-/ Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi Erik Nielsen I'll need to do one more video on them, and then I'll send you an SMS with a price and you can see if you want them. Thank you for watching! :-)
Thanks for the shoutout Morten, glad to have helped the channel grow :)
And yes, the HP server video will be coming soon haha
Hi +Jeremy Scalpello

Jeez! Those IBM servers must have been bulletproof if all it needed was a reboot and it was fine afterwards!
I have worked with over 200 IBM x3650 M1,, never had one die.
The Adaptor on the back is an interposer for SATA To SAS conversion. Apparently it helps with SAS commands, RAID etc. Not sure how true that is, but for enterprise, I've brought a few before.

those 2950's were good for its time. i was buying those for the data center where i worked in 2007 to run red hat 4
Hi +seths1997
Those dell are not bad at all when the run! And I was pretty happy with them when i used them.
Thank you for watching! :-)
I have been gutting two of these at work today, ready to be scrapped. I did keep the memory for my DL360g5 though.
+hughgarsehotmail I love the HP dl360g5's! I have 12 of them and I love them!

HI +Anonymous
That is the Xeon 54xx series just as my IBM x3650 M1 right?
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse Yes it is and I see it now, I meant: 12 dl380g5's instead of dl360g5. I have some of them but not in use.
cool stuff, dam I never miss that noise haha!
Hi +ITServerTech
Yes they do really not need a green power on diode,, you have no problem hearing if it is on :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Hahaha crazy stuff. Much prefer the 11th gen upwards, much quieter :L
+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) The Maintaince slot is a IDRAC card. Exactly Same as ILO nearly.
Hi ITServerTech
Yes, I have used it a tiny little bit,,, are you sure it is wit the "I" and not just an DRAC card?
Thank you for watching! :-)
Well the 11TH gen upwards is called IDRAC. think the 9th gen below is just DRAC come to think to it.
Awesome my friend.
Hi +Raymond Earle
Thank you,, are you in to servers?
Thank you for watching! :-)
@5:19, it's a SAS to SATA converter. This is possibly necessary, if the age of the SAS controller was not able to support SATA drives directly.
Hi Thomas Bonse
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Wise of you keep them far away from Brazil, a client of mine have two of them, oh boy, if there is a way to something go wrong, then they will do it. I usually say that they are with "enconsto" (I doubt that you will undestand what I mean ^^)

CD-rom, Tape drive or a SATA disk.
i own 4 of these love them

Okay,, do not use to much money on it,, The server is old :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Ya it is missing the management adapter. My friend has a Dell Poweredge 2950 II and it to is missing that adapter.
Hi +beaker15
Yes I also came to be my conconslution,,later in the video :-)

Nice video Morten!,
my whole rack is made up of old dell servers!

there is no other function

Yeah the 1u version, i got 4 with 12gb ram and two quad cores, in each, for cheap. I also got an old dell Powervault (mini sas) 12 disk array with it all. Its very loud :D
why did you not clean the thermal paste off of heat sync? does it matter?

Also you shouldn't need an adapter on the drive to make it work on SAS because SATA works with SAS connectors and controllers.
Hi +beaker15
Then what is that PCB on the back of the Harddisk,,,,???
Thank you for watching! :-)
No clue, does the PCB have any numbers or branding?
HI beaker15
I become so clever readin comments :-)
The Adaptor on the back is an interposer for SATA To SAS conversion. Apparently it helps with SAS commands, RAID etc. :-)

Hmm odd haven't heard of that before. I know that SATA drives work with SAS backplanes and controllers but not the other way around.

Hi +Joshua Corley
If it had a PCI-E - x16 slot for a GPU,, I would keep one around for good luck :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) You can actually cut the back bit of the PCIe slot itself (Only the plastic part, do not damage the pins) in order to fit a full length PCIe card.
HI martin borovansky

don't use that HY thermal paste, it performs worse than having no thermal paste.
From personal experience.
Well I have definitely not had the same experiences.

Hi TROBERTSON459
Oh that is cool,, :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
that is kind of rude how you know if some one can afford the shipping or not just because they dont live close what punk
When the shipping becomes more expensive than the server,,and servers are heavy,, and Denmark is a bloody expensive places to ship out from.
@@MyPlayHouse well i think that you should let some one who buy that deside tho
can i get vps ? :)
HI +sami koçkan
