I think they made a riser board back then for gpu because I pulled a tesla card from a r710 and the riser was nearly identical to the pe2950 board, there is 1000 reasons this wouldn't work, but i like the way you think!!
I tried installing a gtx750 in mine without the riser slot. I chose that particular card because it doesn't require additional power to run. So l cut away the the back of the pci-e slot like you did. But in the end I wound up frying the gpu and gave up... don't know if I have the stomach to try again lol. Great job and very cool video man!!
GTX750 is for PCI-e 3.0 (or is it 2.0? anyway) If you are going to try again you should try with the card made for PCI-e (ie version 1) and use the x8 to x16 converter.
It didnt work for you because the tdp for the gtx 750 is 55w where has the pcie x8 only supports 25w, It would work if you got a card that was powered via pcie cables instead.
+Ryuken Suzaku the metal support didn't seem to hurt airflow much. Also this was mainly for a few tests and I didn't plan to use it long term. That did run very hot. Like burning then I touched the back of the server. I missed the fans a while ago to make the quieter and that made that gpu and ram run hotter.
Jittery, out of focus, and kind of done without research. Buy a slot adapter rather than risk damage to the riser board by cutting and hacking away. You made the whole process more difficult than necessary, and the quality of the video is so poor as make it difficult to watch. We would all like to see a proper third party video card installation into a server along with server os drivers to go along with the hardware. Where are the server 2012r2 video drivers that will work with the card? Oh only linux not windows, so you should title this video a linux installation not a server os installation.
I got a free 2950 and I have a gt 210 laying around I'm going to try to put in it, the server only has a 8x slot on the riser card farthest from the power supplies so hopefully that riser card supports GPUs. It has windows server 2008 installed on it too so hopefully that's compatible with everything.
Well it didn't work.... The server wouldn't even turn on with it installed, now I'm not sure if it messed something up on it as it's acting a bit strange now...
Hi, my name is Daniel. I need help! I have no ideas. I have many doubts, I hope you can help me. The history is: I have the same Poweredge R710 and I want to install an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW gpu, we follow the steps of the video and it works, now I have problems to install the drivers. I have the original disk of the graphic card installation, but it works only in Windows 7, it installs perfectly, I have problems to open the interface. NVIDA says it does not work in this version of Windows 7. Then the Windows 10 DVD (version 1903 of Windows 10) will be installed. My problem is that the current NVIDIA drivers do not work, now a yellow exclamation point appears. I read a lot through the Internet and tutorials and they do not solve my problem. I clarify that the gpu never gives video image (Windows 7 as Windows 10). I need professional help, thank you very much.
I had to dig this one up... I tried to install a 960 for shits and giggles but every time the system would freeze when it gets to the remote access part. If I unplugged the card everything works just fine. If I plug in the card, the server defaults to using the graphics card for output, but freezes when it counts down the 5 secs and starts to load in the os. This has bothered me for sooo long... If you're still there please help...
What bios version are you running? I have 6.7 and when I add a gpu It defaults to the main and displays fine until I either go into bios or attempt to boot and then the system immediately locks up. I have tried this with several gpu's and it is whenever the video mode is changed from the initial text mode. Very frustrating I have to say. I would love to retire my 1605T and use this as my htpc/browser. Kind of a sidegrade but the 2 extra cores makes up for it. Amusingly I already had the same perc card in my main rig with a spare and when I got this the Perc was dead. Anyway any help on the bios will be a huge help thx. :)
Hey man. Can you tell me how you have the power at the back hooked up there? Did you need an extra part or is the connector tucked away somewhere inside the 2950. I'm trying to get exactly the same card up and running in exactly the same machine.
My 2950 just had a molex power connector connected to the hdd blackplane that I used. I then connected that to a single molex to 6 pin pcie connector I made. I don't know of any other way to connector power unless you solder directly to the psu or get an adapter from a hdd sata/sas connector.
I havent watched the video all the way yet so i dont know if you fixed it but sometimes if the gpu doesnt support lower speed/sized slots theres 2 pins you have to jump so the slot goes, oh theres a gpu here i should be sending power and data to.
Not a very good thermal setup. Those gpus pull from the side that's going to be right up against the top panel when you reinstall it. And it might be fighting the system fans too.
It was a horrible thermal setup. The back of that server would burn you if you held you finger there for more than a few seconds. The fan was blowing air in the correct direction(out the back). I was mainly doing this for testing, so I didn't mind the extreme temps.
Neat.. and I mean no disrespect, but have you considered going to a speech therapist? I use to have a similar habit of fucking up r's and s's until I did therapy for about 2 years once a week
six minutes in, I started coughing up weed smoke in disbelief at the casual "and once it's done loading drivers, the screen connected to the GPU turns on..." and had to pause to collect myself. damn, l e g e n d, I need to try this with my 2970 now
Yea there pretty power hungry. I wouldn't buy or use one 24/7 today. In there day there were pretty efficient and good but power efficiency but the next generation was much more efficient. Power wise these systems pull about 200w idle with a normal config of ram raid cards and hdds. Full load is around 300w on my comparison. For references my dual 1366 systems, the next generation used about 120w idle with a simmilar config.
+Omid Habib Any adapter would make it so that the card can't be fit in the slot normally due to the added length. Also that costs money and I had a dremel already. The slot was also a 4x only electrical so I can cut away a lot of it and not lose any bandwidth.
You're right it'll work, but matter of the fact their not designed to operate that way but as long as you're okay with bandwidth and gpu calculation performance everything's alright. btw thumbs up for videoing efforts.
they are designed to operate with x8 cards otherwise they would of removed disabled discrete graphics like in the 1950, these are built for x1, x4 and x8 cards.
I got the 12v from a molex connector at molex connector at the front
8 лет назад
But that molex has only one 12V rail... how's it holding? I already tapped into the backplane 20 pin connector... tomorrow I'll double-check it but it should hold on as I spread the load on three 12V rains and three ground rails... Anyway thanks for the reply. I'm just adding a gpu for some fp/openCL acceleration.

PCIe cards are backward compatible. Aka, a PCIe3.0 will work on PCIe 2.0 or 1.0 with degraded performance due to lower bandwidth.

how much power does the pci e slot provide? Its is 1.0 or 2.0 pci e. 8x or 4x are the lane count not the version of pci e.
What about to change priority of IRQ from integrated to dedicated- it should use the dedicated even at the boot.
