- In 2020, Florida became known as a safety haven for wealthy New Yorkers fleeing Covid. In recent months, some of Wall Street and Silicon Valley’s biggest names like Elliot Management, Citadel, Shervin Pishevar, and Keith Robois, have moved to the Sunshine state to build roots. It has reinvigorated a tech and finance boom many local officials like Miami Mayor, Francis Suarez, had worked on for over a decade. But data indicate that some of the hype may be overblown.

As a former Orlando resident and now dc living i can say the jobs in Florida don’t pay to match the economy. Many do not take that into account.

Not only that, unemployment benefits are horrible. I was laid off during maternity leave. Unemployment was $1050. Not even enough to pay my rent. The only job offer I received paid 35 percent less than I was making with no insurance. We were forced to move to Philadelphia where the job market was much brighter. I love Florida but I don't have a lot of faith in the economy. Especially with a raising cost of living.

But think of it like this, most people in America are movers because historically their ancestors moved there.. Whenever anything bad happened to them in their homelands they just moved to America rather than facing it. @Omar Williams rent controlled or a new place? It's not the same. In Miami you are getting a new condo. In NYC or LA it's a 30 years old or more rent controlled building with no amenities. Now if you want to compare apples to apples couple of blocks from the ocean or ocean view in a highly desirable area. Ie brand new with amenities. Then LA or NYC is 40 percent higher or more.

What you have to understand is that these companies and investors are not really looking at FL or TX per say but rather what incentives will those states give them aside the obvious ones, no income tax. As soon as those are done they will move again.
As long as the people fleeing there don't vote in the same stupid policies from where they came from, should be alright.

@@alb12345672 That's not true. NYC has a much higher minimum wage and way better social services. Not to mention cheaper groceries and transportation. If you work full time in any job, you can get by. The same is not true in Florida.
As a lifelong Floridian, the growing influx of inequality and congestion greatly saddens me. Nothing good is coming of this, only all the problems people bring with them. Quality of life here is dissipating before my very eyes. Traffic is horrendous, people are edgy and prices on everything are going through the roof.
Get a side hussle and stop feeling sad.

@@tr3ynag4ta lol I saw an iguana when I was at the beach in Miami, right on the main strip where you have to walk because they don't allow cars anymore. If it wasn't for it climbing up a tree I'd been scared, that thing was huge. Nobody else seemed to mind and I noticed it too late if it wanted to do anything to me, I'm disabled. I just basked in it's presence as I sat there but I kept looking up at that tree but it never came back down in the hour I sat there while my cousins walked the strip.

Amen to that! Spent the better part of 9 years down in Tampa. Folks from back up north are always like "oooh but Tampa has never hit 100 degrees!" Mmhmm.. now factor in the dew point and heat index and take another look. It's utter hell for a good 5 months out of the year.
Summer heat and winter cold are a trade off. Pick the one you dislike least. In the summer at least you can jump in the pool or go to the beach.

The reason why Silicon Valley is thrives in California is that the state has some of the top universities in the country that produce the human capital needed to run tech companies.

I agree. I'm from Florida and I am moving because the skilled job market here isn't very good for people in their 20s. From my experience, it's difficult to advance from an entry-level job and receive a salaried job + benefits. I landed a good job in Atlanta and I want to save for a house that I'll be able to afford reasonably.

Born in Florida and moved away 10 years ago at age 27 to North Carolina. The Miami/South Florida region has continuously sold a lie to prospective residents. It’s always had a lack of true industry outside of tourism, taking care of elderly, white collar crime, and agriculture. Moving to NC was the best thing for me professionally and personally. I love visiting my family, but grateful for the affordable housing and better paying employment I’ve found in North Carolina. The true prosperity I always longed for came to realization in the Charlotte region. It’s an economy built of strong industry sectors.
I love NC too.
Currently living in Ohio. Housing in Ohio is cheaper than NC, so you save even more here.
Miami is going to be the next San Francisco. Also, you can't build an economy off tourism?

Tourism brings low paying wages and is very volatile. Growing up in Florida I saw this first hand. People lost their jobs due to natural disasters and slowing economy frequently. San Francisco and Miami has vastly different makeup. Where’s the Cal Berkeley and Stanford for the employers to recruit from in the Miami metro area?

That’s all I needed to hear.
California spends more per capita than any other state and ranks at the bottom in education and testing. So overall spending does not equal a better outcome. Just ask the parents who are enrolling their children into our local schools because the states where they moved from was horrific and CLOSED. Not to mention, San Francisco opened for ONE DAY last week (in an entire year) so it could qualify for their states educational funding. Can you honestly say those kids are getting a better education than my kids here in Florida when we have been in the classroom since last august despite California spending more on education?
And on healthcare, we are overall a more active state. We aren’t in the top 15 states for obesity or diabetes like other states. A large majority of our population is over 65, so Medicare which is a federally funded program covers those patients. Medicaid which is state funded doesn’t eat up a large portion of our budget. So once again, relating spending to outcome is a false comparison.

My kids teachers in Cali make between $116k and $135k a year teaching 2nd through 5th grade and I'll be blunt - they not exceptional. I say this as a person who has 2 doctorates in the sciences and my mom was a college professor. I value education, but Cali is just turned into a union shill. The only good teacher any of my kids had either retired or were fired because she didn't earn enough tenure to miss the pink slip. So spending is not a reflection of outcomes.
I can verify this to be true in medicine as well as I am a physician.

@Darius Gaynor I couldn't agree more. I grew up in the Florida Panhandle, right below Alabama, and it's hard to enjoy Florida when you're working like a slave. Everything is getting expensive, affordable housing is getting harder to come by, jobs don't pay worth of damn, most of the good jobs are near the beach where most of the tourism happens, and still don't pay much because living on the beach is crazy expensive, etc. But don't worry. My goal is to get out of the rat race once and for all so I can enjoy life again.

About 4 years ago when I entered highschool I started thinking about what I wanted to do in my future and I was researching the tech jobs around me in central Florida and there really wasn’t a lot. Now there are dozens of open positions and a lot of new companies. Definitely a lot of growth in all areas. Going to be interesting how this will work out in the future

I’m from NY, the problem with New York is the politics here is messing the city up, we have jobs, minimum wage is above average granted living costs are high , if you know how to spend and save and invest what little you have not just money but time and other things you manage long enough to find a way to be comfortable , personally I’m buying a house in France cuz I would like a lot of yard space , Upstate has yard space but it’s very remote and Long Island has yard space too but it comes with high property tax. Also I’d like to travel to places in Europe and France is the perfect gateway for a New Yorker

Nope, I spent my entire life in Florida. I'm from Miami (born and raised). That's not true at all.
Florida does not have the cultural savvy of New York. There's no Broadway, no renowned film industry, no Michelin star restaurants filing the cities, no amazing art museums, no fashion industry, no mass transit, city life and restaurants shuts down early in most cities, schools are mediocre at best, etc. Florida leaves much to be desired. Definitely not an alternative to New York.

I have lived in Tampa since 1978 and yes...it's booming with jobs and runaway growth. But traffic is bad. Our auto and homeowner insurance rates are one of the highest in the nation. And to make homeowners insurance worse we have a 2% ( or more ) "wind deductable" on most policies where if your home was destroyed in a hurricane you must pay the 2% wind deductable. Have fun with that even with a average home at $300,000. That would be $6,000 for your deductable. Don't move here unless you already have a good paying job waiting or you are debt free, with no car payments, and you can take the time to build your career and financial situation.

Miami has a lot of problems, the major one is wage and salary, just like most of the country. But here is more visible.
I've lived in Miami all my life, own a business for over 9 years and I've witnessed the huge gap between poor and rich, it's incredible!
You only have two options here, miserable or comfortable, there's no in-between. Ge ready to hustle a lot harder than in NYC if you want to come here.
You're painting an awfully pretty picture of Miami. The stores aren't forced to comply with pages and pages of red tape AND deal with the nightmarish conditions you already describe. And we don't even have the nice weather.
I would think in NYC would be even tougher since it’s even more expensive (rent, dining...) then Miami
Not only that but Wall Street banks can recruit the best talent when you got the Ivy League very close by - to compete against that is very hard because these schools have a big reputation. Florida doesn’t have the pedigree that schools in the northeast have.
@@johnl.7754 Miami doesn't pay well in comparison to NYC. So it takes a lot longer to live comfortably. You can still make it but it will take longer and you'll have to be creative. Most of the people who make a good salary come from New England, in fact, 70% of all my clients are from the North East, Miami people are moving to Texas or California. My friends from New York don't want to move back, they say it's too expensive and pay too little, all 5 of them. lol

I just moved out of South Florida (Broward) in Nov 2020. I do not miss it but this will devastate the young population in the area. Housing was already high and was rocketing up with homes being bid 20%+ over asking. Car insurance will increase as well along with other cost of living items. Wages are hard to fight for and labor is plentiful. You have to work two jobs in some cases to get ahead. The area has tons of opportunity though which comes at a cost. I hope the current residents are prepared.

The main problem with Florida’s future is sea level rise and stronger tropical storms. If the state really wants to become the next New York or Silicon Valley, it really needs to invest in better infrastructure NOW, otherwise the cost of all those disasters will be so huge that people will leave the state just like they are doing with NY or CA.

If florida is going to be under water in the next 30 years as alot of these climate change scientist claims then banks would stop approving mortgages and commercial loans since they'll be losing money! Hurricanes are not as bad as the news make it seens. Yes it can be devastating but just look at the impacts snowstorms and freezing cold has on infrastructure as well.

Having been raised in Palm Beach County, Florida, I can say that it is a tough place to raise kids. There are a lot of distractions from the beach to just a staggering amount of unearned wealth.
Say, instead of silicon valley or LA where you might see a lot of people working hard to build a fortune; along the coast there is just a lot of wealth of unknown origin; a lot of rich people who have nothing in common except they are rich. The schools are low quaility and it is very hard to go to an ivy league school from a Florida public or private school. One can get into top schools, but once one arrives one realizes one is woefully underprepared. I wrote more pages of term papers my first semester in college than I had written in middle school and high school combineed. Now I live in Orlando and I find it to be a less crazy place than south Florida.
I live in Naples fl. It one of the richest city in USA me personally don’t have a prob with the rich ppl cuz most of their kids do to public school. However I only realized I live so close to the rich when downtown. School fine but it probaly cuz I’m in the Cambridge program. The only way to achieve here is to be smart so you hang with the elite then ur drowning. It sad.

Coworkers of mine in the service & hospitality industry down in Miami worked 18hrs a day, 7 days a week, and developed a cocaine habit not for recreational purposes but so they could pull such long shifts. It was all simply to make ends meet. Throw in some of the rudest & racist mofos you'll ever meet, terrible drivers, zero public transit / need to own a car & pay for parking everywhere while losing hours of your life to sitting in traffic, crime, violence, climate change & natural disasters - and it is a miracle anyone would want to live there.
But the wealthy retirees think it is great because they can lay on the beach all day while not having to deal with any of that.
I am also from Florida. That part was not shocking at all. My high school did not have enough textbooks to go around and we had a serious overcrowding problem. People would show up on the first day of new schedules and there was no seat for them in their class. I graduated in 2011.

My friends first month in florida. He found an alligator swimming in his pool, so he built a fence in the drive way. Week later he finds a python in his backyard so he had to reinforce his gates and make sure there's no holes around his whole house. No his big problem is giant iguanas falling out of the trees and into his yard. Now he's like why did I leave ny when all he saw was an occasional rat. Also florida has giant roaches

My friend, you may want to take some time and learn how taxation works. When a population increases, the taxes local and state governments generate increase as well as more people are paying them. I have never lived in a state with income taxes my entire life Nevada, Wyoming, Missouri and now Florida. I am not rich by any means.. just smart enough to know how to keep more of my hard earned income and give less to the government to support those that want don't want to participate in the process. Those that visit Florida pay their "fair share" of taxes so don't need an income tax. If you think companies are leaving China due to wages that is LOL. Don't forget the Chinese government controls everything.. including who stays and goes. The quality of life in Florida is much greater than in New York due to less socialism, government control and less congestion of people. It seems like there is practically a new skyscraper announced in east Miami every month. With the new Brightline speed train connecting the 3 downtowns in Southeast Florida, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, people can work in Miami downtown and live in any of the 3 greater cities.
