On the rewatch, while being older, I weirdly appreciate the dynamic between Spleen and Bowler. He signals interest. She makes it very clear there is absolutely zero attraction on her part. But she isn't rude about it, she doesn't drag it out, just no. And he just accepts it, continues on, doesn't try to argue or make a scene. This feels like a very healthy example of rejection, which is rare to see in movies especially nowadays, and I feel has hurt a lot of peoples' perception on how to approach it from both sides.

Kitty Pryde is still visible, but I get your point, he's like a combination of intangible/invisible. I think the clothes falling off thing was more a way to explain that he is going invisible and not his clothing, which is always an odd thing with a lot of powers in the proper comics...I know they explain it away with "unstable molecules cloth" in the FF, but it's a nonsense 😂. Just quicker to have them fall off than have a big undressing scene. And his hand has to be tangible to pull the switch.

Another great, short comedy series is FAWLTY TOWERS. This movie should get more credit for being a superhero satire before the modern boom of superhero movies that made superhero satire much more common in media. Also, this movie is responsible for gracing the world with the Smash Mouth song "All Star" that will forever get radio play on pop stations.

Not really a satire at all though? More of just a classic parody. Superheroes/heroism as a concept is glorified and uplifted by the film, and not really criticized at all.

🤣I know. Everybody assumed Shrek introduced All-Star, but it was Mystery Men first.

@mitchelltyler5972 Media like The Boys, Invincible, or Brightburn really has a critical look at superheroes, especially ones who don't deserve to be called heroes. Like Sky High said-
Will Stronghold: "Just because you have powers, that doesn't make you a hero. Sometimes, it makes you a jerk."
And that's definitely the case with Homelander, amped to 11.

TRIVIA: Ben Stiller and Janine had Been seeing other and broken up prior to the movie, so they had something to work with for their character interactions.
In 1999, I Believe "The Spleen" was Paul Rueben's (Pee Wee Hermans) attempt to make a come back after Cast out of Hollywood Following his Arrest in a Porn Theatre in 1991 (RIP).

I haven't seen it mentioned in the comments yet, but this was based off the Comic series Flaming Carrot, though the character of Flaming Carrot does not appear in the movie! In the comics, Flaming Carrot is one of the founding members of the Mystery Men superhero group.

I remember we rented it on video at the time, and really enjoyed it. Didn't realise it bombed so badly at the time, but it does have a kind of straight to video quality to it, and it must have made some money back since, it's a bit of a cult classic comedy.
