Sorry for my ignorance. What Ravel was that, the piano concerto for the left hand? I play a Fox contra; I’m impressed and pleased with Howard’s sound on the Buffet.
I think I may prefer it's timbre other the classic bassoon. Which could be my novelty bias, since the instruments don't seem to be different enough to produce noticeably distinct timbres*. *Color of sound (not pitch alone)
Nice to see someone giving Ravel a shout-out. I don't remember the story, but I think it goes that a ww1 soldier lost his right hand during the war, which sucked because he was a concert pianist. He commissioned Ravel to write him musical pieces that were solely for the left hand.
It was Paul Wittgenstein. To the best of my knowledge, he only commissioned one piece from Ravel, but did commission many other pieces from other composers.
I’m so ignorant. I didn’t even know what a contrabassoon was, but after hearing it, I am sure I have heard it before. It’s a beautiful instrument. Isn’t it amazing how many instruments there are in the world. Whenever I meet a musician, I am always curious to learn why of all the instruments in the world, why did they choose that one? It’s fascinating. Sometimes they join the school band and there’s no tuba player and they become one. Anyway I want to learn more about this instrument now.
This contrabassoon has some good sound. But what helps make the sound is the person who's playing it. And it matters how the person plays it, and he did good being able to make the notes sound nice.
Bubinga is often called "West African Rosewood", and is incredibly beautiful and a joy to work with! I am currently working on a jewelry box from heavy figured Waterfall Bubinga and Curly Oak. Gorgeous!
Just tried out the Ravel LH concerto yesterday and today I get this in my recommendations! What a beautiful instrument. Going to think of this every time I listen now.
At the first moment I saw it I thought "oh dang... it's beautiful..." I mean, look at that dark brass bell, look at its soft coloured wood, look at the keys that melt in so perfectly in the instrument... I swear I'm loving this more for its look than its sound
I had never realised that there were different types of contrabassoons. My friend played bassoon in high school, and in about year 10 started with the contrabassoon. Hers was obviously the german-style one. But wow, had I forgotten just how those bass notes could hit you in your bones!
perfect "villain sneaking around in the shadows" music
Ravel piano concerto for the left hand
@@harvc741 I also love his other piano concerto. All movements are a masterpiece.
I really love his Concerto for the Left Hand precisely because of its dark character all over the work.
Bass clarinet is also used in such parts
I don't know about "villain" necessarily, but definitely gives walking around in the dark / at night vibes

As soon as I saw the instrument, I immediately heard the exact excerpt of Ravel that you ended up playing. That was deeply satisfying.

Tougher and dense and thinner are fairly accurate for most French that I have met, while traveling abroad…and who doesn’t love that sound!
I much prefer this style of contrabassoon than any other. Its the only contrabassoon I’ve heard that has a clear tone without being muddy and grumbly
