    I did the first half of my PPL from Hawarden, you can get a nice bit of sink coming in over the river there that can catch you out. 15 years later I'm now based in Scotland, in the process of renewing my ratings and looking forward to a nice trip up the great glen myself now. I highly recommend the lunch at Sleap's Lock Lounge - much better than Hawarden and probably the reason I put on a few pounds finishing off my PPL... Blue skies!

    A great video showing the challenges we all face with cross country flying in the UK.
    Good decision making on your part when the met started to close in on you.
    As you say it is a real shame we do not have LARS at the weekend.

    Wow wow wow! Loch Ness looked incredible! Stunning place to fly and added in my bucket list. This is one of my favorite videos. Great work Jon. I would love to know what music library you use.

    Lovely views down the great glen! I think that is solidly in my bucket list now!
    I'm not surprised you struggled at Liverpool. I was on the ground at Wolverhampton from 9:00 till 13:00 waiting for the weather to lift that morning. I eventually departed to Compton Abbas at 2000ft but on the return leg achieved 5000ft! It was a weird day.

    Fantastic Jon, I was lucky enough to do my PPL in Dundee, which allowed lots of varied flying among the amazing scenery! Cameras just don’t do it justice...

    Yet another great vid, I was surprised that you used OR instead of GOR when landing at Hawarden. You are normally a stickler for detail. It’s not a dig as your radio work is probably better than mine. Maybe just a stressful fight through Liverpool.

      I did that a lot on this flight, and I'm not happy about it. I think it was fatigue.

    Flown that route down the Great Glen also and, as you say, it is truly spectacular!! Loved the bagpipes playing in the background, however, Jon, you do need to practice pronouncing "Loch" correctly!! lol

    These sort of flights are exactly why we are shortly adding a fuel totaliser when the engine monitor goes in!

    Just a heads up, there are sea lochs then there are those that are above sea level. Loch Ness is actually more than 50ft above sea level for example! In the grand scheme of aviation that's nothing, but it's worth pointing out that freshwater lakes are usually not found at sea level!

    Wonderful shots of the Great Loch... however I'm always confused at the seemingly complex ATC compared with USA/Canada (where I fly). A multitude of different squawks throughout your trip. It seems each radar area is a completley separate organization from those around it... If I were under flight following (where I live) I would be handed off to the next ATC who would know who I was and where I was going...You seem to have to start from scratch at each freq change...and Radar coverage closed at the weekend. Really !

      You’re pretty much right. Unless you file a flight plan (and who does that to go VFR?) or call all the respective control centres in advance they have no way of knowing who you or you want from them. UK ATC is privatised, so in many cases will be run by different operators in different places. None of this is problem for short local flights, but gets a bit tedious on longer routes, you definitely have it better in North America. And that’s before we consider how complex some UK airspace can be, especially in the South. You get used to it all, but I’d love a flight following type of system over here.
      Lots of our low-altitude radar cover is provided by the military, who always seem to go out their way to be helpful, but at most bases don’t work weekends.

      @@trolletarian Thank you for fully explaining. I had not realized ATC was privatized, nor run by different operators nor that radar coverage was military (!). Flight following here (in Ontario) and the rest of Canada/USA is pretty much a sort of semi IFR radar control for VFR flight (but maintaining visual separation, clear of cloud etc etc). Really useful and (I think) much easier to understand, follow and know what to expect. Thanks again.

    Next time you are in the area walk “the great glen” , it takes about 4 or 5 days and is a compelling experience!

    WoW what a flight. a question though. Didin't you need a life jaket on? Even Skydeamon shows you have been out of the reach of a shore at some point through your flight. Just asking the question, don't know the answer myself.

      Hi. The law says that we must have life jackets readily available, which we did. It's wise to wear them if you're out of gliding range, but save for the odd minute or two, we were within gliding range...that's why I was at 7500ft.

    Well, that was a flight with inreasing tension and workload and long for you both. Well executed and highlights your airmanship and decision making can be forgiven for calling OR instead of GOR. I think many PPL pilots will add this to bucket lists.

    Can we have a video over Loch Lomond and The Pike Loch at the North End but watch out for C130's (Hercules) which often fly this route North to South ! I saluted one whilst Pike Fishing in my boat and an Aircrewman flew a white flag at me from the ramp ...honest !

    After signing off with Blackpool could you not have asked Liverpool for an IFR clearance through their zone which might have eased height/weather/visibility pressures on you?

      Could have done, but given their traffic, I expect I would have had to be at 3500 feet for separation, which would put me in the class A I think, and I can't go there.

      I’m fly out of Inverness a lot. Routinely flying the glen at 500ft. If your engine goes your in the water anyways as the mountains are too steep
