  • Hollywood leading man Errol Flynn, debonair and dashing, was well known for his womanising ways and quick temper. However he loved animals and especially dogs. In 1935 Arno, a Standard Schnauzer dog, came in to his life and each discovered a kindred spirit in the other. Rarely apart, Arno became as famous in Hollywood as Flynn his master. No one could foresee that this dogs tragic death could spark one of the most notorious real life fights Hollywood had ever seen. Slideshow of Flynn and Arno showing the unbreakable bond between them.

Why wouldn’t Errol love Arno? The dog never told him what to do, no boundaries etc. You can see on Errol’s face the look of and contentment when Arno was with him. He never looked as at ease when photographed with one of his women. The love of an animal is so pure.

Errol wasn't a bad person, he could maintain respectable relationships with people he liked, but he hated Hollywood types, and he used women who allowed themselves to be used. I read an excerpt from another Hollywood female actor who was able to forge a friendship with him because she wasn't seduced by him and wouldn't take his shit; she stood up to him (which he loved in women); she speaks of a conversation she had with him one day where she questioned his treatment of women and he said, "I only treat them like that if they let me...why not?"; not exactly a great attitude but it certainly shows that he was capable of respecting and caring for women if he liked them.
He was terribly abused by Damita, and to read what he went through being married to her is horrific. She really fucked with his head and was horribly physically abusive towards him. When you read his biography you certainly get the sense that he was desperately unhappy being married to her but had no idea how to get out of the relationship, and whenever he tried she would manipulate the situation, either with sex or by trying to find ways to trap him in the relationship; classic abusive behavior. Pregnancy was one way that she did that, and she used Sean to keep Flynn in her life and to continue abusing him and making his life terrible for as long as she could.
Flynn was the kind of guy who could seduce many women (not all though), and he would go as far as he could with any woman who would let him, which meant that he had his fair share of crazies that stalked him and who declared publically that he loved them and that they would marry...after one night together! This was another scenario he couldn't deal with and was terribly traumatized by, but played a big part of bringing on himself.
Errol always assumed that people saw the world as he did, and they didn't, and that's what got him into trouble a lot. He was very naive that way.
For me Flynn never had role models or a mother figure in his life; both of his parents were largely absent from his childhood pursuing their own lives, so he spent his life trying to find people that he could look up to and learn from (Hollywood is probably not the best place to be looking for role models), and that certainly comes through in his biography.
Errol entered Hollywood at a very formative time in his life and married an abusive woman; he became an overnight sensation and had women throwing themselves at him. All of this coupled with his early life in Tasmania and New Guinea, where he lived a very free and exotic existence (without many of the social customs of the western world), he was someone who was used to coming and going as he pleased with very little, if any consequences for his behavior, so it was very difficult for him to comprehend other's reactions to his behavior sometimes, and very difficult for him to form a solid identity. This guy had no idea who he was or what he wanted, yet had the mindset of wanting it all if it was on offer. He essentially had no 'off' switch.
The other largely overlooked thing about Errol's personality is that he was very Australian...very!, and his sense of humor didn't always go over in America. Australians have a very dry, black 'take the piss' sense of humor (which served us well in the convict days). Australians use humor to make sense of things and cope with suffering and to show affection for other people (even if we're taking the piss out of you, it means we like you), and our sense of humor can be quite hard-hitting if you're not used to it and don't realise where it's coming from, this still gets Aussies in trouble on the world stage sometimes. Much of what came out of Errol's mouth that caused offense was just his Aussie sense-of-humor at play. He was saying a lot of it with his tongue firmly embedded in his cheek, but delivered with a deadpan expression (as is very customary with Aussie humor) it confused people, and upset people.
Errol saw this as people being uptight, rather than not understanding his humor.
He was a wonderful character, full of life, incredibly flawed, confused, insecure and addicted to adventure. This makes for one complex, lovable, hateable, but unique individual. Hence the fact that people are still talking about him today.

I read about him all weekend. Ooh he was something else. I'll never be able to think about him without smiling. There's one thing I don't understand, why he wasn't buried in Jamaica where he wanted to be? That really bothers me and Lily, what a nasty person. I love seeing pictures of him with his kids, beautiful.

Very nicely said, he was a pretty amazing man even with his flaws and I really don't think that he was well served by hitting it big in Hollywood so quickly and taking the 'easy route' which I do not believe satisfied much in him. I'm sure he loved the money and some of the fame, but his spirit was broken by it all. He wanted so much to be taken seriously and to be respected. I think when he didn't get that, and they only saw what they wanted to see, he said shit, I'll just be that guy (in fact, he said something like that himself.) He was a remarkable person IMHO and I would have loved to sit over a beer with him. His stories of his life in New Guinea must have been quick extraordinary and he would have told them with such verve and panache.

Like so many others that want only to love and to be loved unconditionally, a precious animal to found to be that outlet. Our Father above, surely knew what he was doing when he created animals. No doubt that at the time he created then, he knew then that they would be the best friend of many a man or woman.

I first read My WICKED WICKED WAYS in 1960, and I have not stopped since, I read and re-read it, even though I know that it is embellished, overblown and consists of fact mixed with fantasy.but, for me aged 71, it has been my Bible, my passage through life, Flynn and Erben have inspired me and my lovely wife to visit every city, place of interest, eveyy wish list on earth, from Rennes le Chateau to Pisa and Florence, Even Errols Pompei visit

not a good book, i think it is entirely true, but it is not a life to imitate, too dangerous, too risky, too over human capabilities, only for a superman as Flynn was or believed he was ( for his father the darwinist biologist) to be lived, not for current people. I think the book is unique , truely and the best ever written about the real life of a adventurer without morality. far better than Casanova's.

@@metacosmos It is a brilliant book. I'd say it and Casanova's are both excellent. What it shows is if you take a risk and believe in yourself sometimes it pays off. He had potential. He said if he hadn't been a film star he would have been a beachcomber or a clerk in an office all his life. If you have a gift you have to take a risk or it wastes away. He said later in his life that his films brought joy to others. "Even that is something," he said.

There was also a very sad incident where Flynn, in a rush to take care of a major personal crises, backed his car out and ran over his dog. This happened at the worst possible time for him, emotionally.
Talk about suffering "The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune"!
Given how intense a man he was - quick to anger when his short fuse was sparked, and crying when his heart could take no more - I don't know how he dealt with it all as well as he did.

Tommy Hall - You lost me. Are you saying he e had two dogs named Arno? I'm pretty sure one dog died in New Guinea because of the gasses from the roots of that jungle grass. Another fell off a boat. And I'm sure I remember reading about another dog he had that he backed over with the car. Three of the many terrible shocks in that very emotional man's life.

    • @tommyhall5010
      @tommyhall5010 8 лет назад

You are right, poisonous gasses killed the one in New Guinea but I am sure that Arno was the one he ran over, by the way have you read Errol Flynn a memoir by Earl Conrad or The Young Errol, Flynn before Hollywood, both books I have in my posession?
