      Because it has plastic headlamps (massive clue there) and is designed to be thrown away?
      Or did you mean "W126 is and will always be the best s-class ever made."?

      @imaginova88 6 лет назад +4

      Doc in some ways yes. Its got more cool stuff than the 126 and having had both, build quality is on par, yet the 126 is the one that will be running for longer, its more reliable due it being not as complicated. 124 126 140 129, favourites i wish id bought and put in a cocoon to relish now!

    Back in 1997, if you owned a S500, you were on top of the game. S500's were respected back in the day, like Rolls Royce's are today. A great analogy is this: In 1996, if you drove an S500, it's like driving a Rolls Royce Ghost today. The S600 was like driving a Phantom today. No one had it other than corrupt stock brokers, credit card scammers, high class residents, and the wealthy 1%ers. Nowadays, I see a brand new W222 S550 virtually every street in Los Angeles. 2k down, 1,200$ a month lease... you couldn't lease W140's, it'd cost you an arm and a leg to finance it. I'd prefer a very well maintained, low mile W140 S500 or S600 rather than a new S550.

    • @coffinman5007
      @coffinman5007 6 лет назад

      Lewis no pre-'95 car can ever be "second" to a post-'95 one. Post -'95 cars are designed to be unsevicable after a decade at the most, they are like expensive disposable razors.
      Look at how most people swallowed the bullshit; they gave you plastic headlamps and how many of you reckon you like them? Plastic headlamps are crap, get real about it.
      Or when you were a kid, and all headlamps were glass, did you dream of the day when you would be able to buy a car with plastic headlamps? A car that looked pretty much like any other car? A car that would force you to pay for expensive repairs to systems you would be better off without?
      W126 pisses all over this one in any area that actually matters.

All it's missing is the rear power sunshade and I'd love to fine genuine Mercedes side retractable shades but that's virtually impossible. To complete the look I'd wanna put the 18" AMG monoblock wheels from the grand edition. Next on my list if I can ever get my hands on one is a black on black 1997-1999 CL600.

I can SAY this, it doesn't have the fancy ride control it has just the plane suspension and I PROMISE you this is the best handling Mercedes ive ever been in.. and I've been in a few, I've owned Audi as well. the car weighs as much as a new Dodge Challenger, and yet cruises down the road nimble and smooth as a swiss watch.. Newer Mercedes magnetic ride control does not impress me after this car.

Most of the W220's I see are all rusted out or their air suspension is blown. I can only imagine what the new W222 will cost to maintain once its out of warranty. Yikes! Great video!

      I own a w220 barbus S500 & a w220 AMG kompresser both black on black beautiful cars & reliable they are just like all Mercedes if you don't take care of them they won't take care of you!

      Tony, glad to hear your w220 has been reliable but it is true Mercedes cut cost with the w220 line. The body on the w220 were not fully galvanized from the factory and instead used some type of wax base corrosion inhibitor which doesn't hold up well to salty conditions. You can also compare the thickness of the hides used on the seats. The w220 is much thinner, where as the in the w140 and w126 they used 1 cow for each seat (embellish), that's why the interiors in these cars hold up so much better. Anyways enjoy the w220.

      I own a '83 W126 500SE as a weekend cruiser and its probably the best built S class of all time, 36 years old and the leather on the seats are showing zero signs of wear. Its amazing how thick the leather on these are!
      The problem with the W140 is that early models suffer from electrical problems due to breakages in the wiring harness (especially now that these cars are getting older the plastic which insulates the wires is beginning to get brittle and crack, causing wires to touch each other and create all sorts of electrical problems) which is secured to the floor and behind the dash. To fix this the entire interior needs to come out, including the dash which is welded on.
      There was a facelift of the W140 that came out in 1996 (to be recognised by clear indicator lenses on the rear, such as the one in this video) and MB seemed to have resolved the problem with the harness but unfortunately cost cutting already became an issue with mercedes in the mid 90's and there have been reports that facelifted versions of the W140 don't have the same buildquality - cheaper plastics in certain places - that early models did. So if you want the real S-class experience you should probably go for a pre 1996 car and just set some cash aside for a new wiring harness somewhere in the future.

    • @DIYDanCars
      @DIYDanCars 7 лет назад +3

      You're correct. Mercedes decided used a biodegradable wiring harness in their cars for the early W140's, which unfortunately was a total disaster. I believe the later years of w140's didn't use a biodegradable wiring harness, but don't quote me.

      Apparently the S-Class involved in the accident was already wrecked from a previous accident, after it was stolen from the owner some time ago before the august '97 incident…
      That Benz should have been taken out of the road regarding the bad damage it got, but it didn't happen…
      So it got kinda restored and continued to drive around regardless that one accident where it got stolen…
      Plus, it was a S280… just a simple entry level S-Class…
      the smallest engine of the W140 model!
      What a shame…
      The owner (which was a journalist/photographer at that time) apparently wanted an S-Class to show off, to be like the big guys…
      but hadn't enough money for a S500 or 600…

      In the crash that killed Diana, the only person to survive was wearing his seat belt. Mercedes claims that a person in one of their cars traveling @ 100 MPH or less will survive the crash if wearing their seat belt. That make a strong statement to the integrity of the automobiles Benz makes. My personal favorite is a S600 armored series.

      Don’t forget she wasn’t wearing any seatbelts. The people who were survived, rightly so, it’s a Mercedes! I only drive them for this reason alone. They’re bank vaults on wheels.

    W126 has a calm elegance that just don't appear in all this over complicated modern designs. W140 comes close. But all other designs ever since couldn't capture that essence. They were good cars with all kinds of technology but the presence of 126 and 140 is something different.

    Well known fact that W140 and W124 were the end of an era for MBZ, with introduction of W220 and W210 it was clear that some inferior components were being used in the interests of cost cutting, I saw this firsthand since i did all repairs and services on our Mercedes’s

    Today, I started an old 97 S420 that I was given. It sat under trees for over 3 years while I waited for the former owner, who gave it to me, to get a clear title on it.
    It's been horribly neglected, not maintained at all, is rough on the outside, was filthy as a pig sty on the inside, and is just a generally shabby looking car. It's really not worth restoring, so I'm going to sell it as basically a running parts car.
    I washed it and took it out for a spin around the neighborhood, and was reminded what great cars these things are. It still runs and drives beautifully, and even in its present condition, it's a better car than 95% of what's being made today. And honestly, I would have no qualms about putting a tag on that car and driving it out of state. Even it its present condition, it's that good a car.
    The guy who made this video is absolutely right. The W-140 Mercedes exudes solidity and quality. They're like rolling around in a bank vault. And having worked on them, I can attest to the fact that although they are complicated, they are also ridiculously over-engineered, making them durable and reliable in a way that no similar BMW 7-series or later S-Classes even come close to.
