I think it is a very good presentation of the hidden history of Goa. In fact I met a Goa Christian who told me how the Portuguese used to convert Goanese Hindus. He said Hindus were brought in the open and were asked to convert and if they didn't they will shoot. Yes it is a hidden history and should be unearthed for the benefit of progeny. Similar thing happened in Chennai where the Portugese moved the famous Kapaleswar temple area from Santhome Beach and establish the landmark Santhome church.
currently there is a planned severe conversion going on in Tamil Nadu, by the Pentacostal mission and CSI. They break families by asking people to remarry someone from the Xtian faith. Drivers, Security people, cleaners, clerical staff, municipal workers are all easy targets and forcibly converted. When they get into a taxi or auto, they force the driver to remove all religious symbols of the drivers faith. Atrocities in the name of religion. Paul Dinakarans family , Lazarus etc are the ones behind conversions like this. Soon TN will lose all the Hindus.

Your gene is very antique though and my Namaskaram from Kochi. I have many Konkan friends here and they are admirably great group of people intact.

We are also Gowd Saraswat Brahmins and our temple in Goa actually has the documented facts of the names of the Hindu people who converted or rather who were forced to convert and their Christian names after conversion!! And that was so sad and horrifying to read.

Shefali I did my graduation in Konkani in 1998 . I am surprised that we were not even teached all the cruel things that this Portuguese did to us. Even my father who was a student at that time was telling me about them. Now my daughter is also studying Konkani she has been taught about vadle ghor, Aut de fe and everything that we didn't even heard. I learnt a lot from her. It should be the duty of govt to teach our students from the begining the history of Goa and everything in detail including the bad side then only they will realise how good was the Portuguese rule. Atleast our future generations will not praise them.

To destroy a culture internally, there are more not very crude and apparent ways of doing things. Persecution is only an extreme choice, they could also slowly take away the practices. Its difficult because india is a diverse kind were people were taught only certain type of professions they needed in order to survive. Rest of the time its about spirituality. So moving from the way of one land to another and living there required a lot of sacrifices. If a bunch of haenas were to capture a deer and decides to take it on a wrong place, the lion wouls sniff it out and get rid of them. Traces can be very lethel. Leaving a trace when invading can back fire even if its for small things. They were very cautious in making the enquiry so that the practices were entirely destroyed

When half or more than that, wealth of india was taken by british and people were barely even able to survive with the depressing economy, I don't think they could afford to think of the hurtful past. In our school, kids started sleeping with eyes opened even when the subject of history came, they don't even care about their own parents history. Indian history is way too much for them. All these things would be interesting if all of their life was lead based on family culture. Now that they are more under modern ways, these things are like headache to remember because all they care about is luxury. Its the way the education is conducted

As for ignoring history, its like I said. Nobody has time to keep on learning things. Life doesn't exist to download information like that. If it happened we can learn but there shouldn't be other things to do, instead of turning this into a history subject to carry on shoulder, it'd be better if these events are discussed by common masses like they do with mahabharata or ramayana. Problem with Hinduism is casteism.Unless Hindus get rid of casteist mentality they will be under threat from other religions. Upper caste Hindus are sitting and deliberating on how they were persecuted.If they had applied their brains and united all Hindus and fought together India would have been a super power today.Even today many upper caste Hindus treat and show indifference towards lower caste.unless Hindu religious practices are reformed there is no point in playing victim to other religions.

Don't worry Vaidya. Goa still has a very strong caste system, especially in the New Conquests. All isn't lost. You can still get your own chai cup. Ohh, maybe this won't affect you though. I am a Indian but not a Goan but I know the Cast in India is a group of particular people/Ethnic group who share genetic ancestry and culture. there are 1000s of different ethnic groups of people or Casts present in India since 1000s of years. I would like to know, what is very strong cast system in Goa? I also know there are casts in Goan Christians also, from the ethnic groups/cast they converted. If different ethnic people( the casts ) can live together peacefully then what is your problem with the casts? Why would Portuguese interfere with the India's Ethnic groups(Casts) matter?. Did Indians ever interfere with Portuguese slavery practice?
