Thanks for this! I was gifted a TG1-S set from a friend who had never used them, and of course the first thing I did was bend one of the nibs. The replacements I was seeing for sale didn't seem to visually match, but after watching this I understand what to do.
Six years later, this video is a gift that keeps on giving. I just found a complete set of these in Goodwill last night, instructions and all, for $3.99. Grabbed them up. Now to clean them. : ) The last part to unthread to take out the needle is being stubborn on them. I'm trying the microwave nuking method, although you didn't mention it.
What an awesome tutorial! I had these pens for years and they were totally dried up. I just cleaned the 0.5 mm one and am onto the 0.75 and 0.35 next. Thank so much!
Thank you. I just found my set I had in college 40 years ago! I’m in the process of cleaning the first one now. I had forgotten that you use the plastic tube to unscrew the nib.
Many thanks! I came across an old TG1 set which I bought for $2. I just spent 4 hours cleaning out the gummed up and chunky ink from them. I filled them up with Sumi Ink as I will use them for art, and now they work a treat! I used toothpicks, cotton buds and lots of hot water to clean them up.
Great video! I recommend using q-tips soaked in room temperature water if you find your nib is a bit gunked with ink. I soaked mine in water for around 10 mins and a bunch of dried ink fell out. Make sure everything is dry of before reassembling! Thanks this helpful tutorial!
Thank you so much for this video. I didn't know these pens until yesterday, took one home from the flea market and now figuring out how to put it into use. Now to figure out how to fill the ink sac!
Very helpful thank you 🙏🏻 I just want to point out if you want to clean 0.30 and down it’s going to be hard I tried it the needle is very thin so get bend and I couldn’t put it back
pulling out the piston with the metallic hair is highly risky. If the thin hair gets bent just a little bit, which happens super easys, the pen is broken. I managed it a couple of times but I also lost a couple of pens while doing this.
Very important question about the Faber Castell TG1-S pens. Is the ink a "refillable" cartridge where you pour the ink in, or is it one of the cartridges where you have to replace the entire cartridge?
The question guys it's, can we use any ink for these pens? I have loads of parker quink and hope u can use it instead of buying brand specific. I truly appreciate any tips. Thanks
Look up Rotring or Faber Castell ink. It comes in small plastic bottles with a think neck, similar to the ones on eye drop bottles. It allows you to fill the ink cartridge easily.
I've just been given a set of 3. They are old. Made in West Germany so over 25 years old but they look to be in good condition. The problem is not only are they clogged, the reservoirs are virtually bonded to the sections by old ink. Any ideas how I might remove them without damage?
+Artistically Motivated that's a tough one, when the ink dries it's like cement. I'd try soaking it on some heavyweight detergent (the ones with the warning signs on the back) but be careful how long you soak them as it will start to corrode anything metallic. Try overnight to see how it come along. The other option is to try and source parts off Ebay, often the individual bits can be bought separately.
what do I do if there isn't the tiny metal needle/hair inside the nib unit? I got a set from my dad and every pen (0.35, 0.5, 0.7) has a metal hair inside except for the 0.25mm one.
Well figured it out its so damn small I could hardly see it. It got yanked out and was stuck in the tip of the pen. I should have soaked the tip before attempting to remove as the dried ink held it in the tip and pulled it right out hardly any force because its so damn fine. I had to push it down enough to see it sticking out the tip then pull it through with a tweezers to get it out. Had to use a magnifying glass to even see it in there. Gonna attempt to repair by epoxying it back on hopefully it works out.
Then its garbage. You need to find a new nib. Unfortunately, Faber Castell have discontinued these models, but if you have ebay you might find one there for your pen. That's why its recommended not to do it... its such a delicate pin and its incredibly easy to break. I own a lot of these pens and I would never open them like this, it just scares me too much 😂 best of luck to you!
hi ,im using a tech.pen Aristo mg1.does anybody know how to clean them without cleaning fluid?(im trying to keep the costs as low as possible☺).im using technical pens for my art work for many years.please reply asap.thank you and cheers from Perth, west australia.
Kinda late to the party but, does anyone know If the little hair has to stick out of the nib a tiny bit? I cleaned my pen thoroughly and now It does the rattling sound you talked babout but I dont know If I messed up the wire.
Only way is to fill with ink and try. I used to have a set of Staedtler Mars with the same system and I took the piston out - couldn't believe I had put it back in and did the same thing 3 times before I believed I hadn't damaged the wire. I'm researching Faber Castells myself having been donated one - the Rotrings I also received are the same age but cleaned up nicely with Rotring cleaning fluid. Good luck with yours!
Update! I cleaned all the junk on my pens wiith hot water and 2/3 are working fine, thanks for the video i really apreciated it. Turns out that the little wire was to stick a little so I didnt fuck up big time there.

I just found my 40 year old set. I’ve disassembled and am soaking the pieces. You may want to try that before microwaving.
@@panthermom I did. They soaked overnight, first. Thanks.

Ça faisait 9 ans que c’était boucher et grâce à toi ça va fonctionné merci ❤❤❤
Thanks for the great tutorial just cleaned and filled a 17 year old TG1-S, I filled it with printer ink as a test and it works like a charm.
I wish I had this video back in 1975 when I first got the pens! I just gave my set to my sister.... and emailed her this video!
This is such an underrated video. Thanks!

Nice! Is sumi ink working well?
@@evelynchan5366 I would use fountain pen ink to avoid clogging all together. Personally i use Noodlers bullet proof black

Excellent tutorial! I followed all the steps, only bent one needle, I'd say it was a pretty successful endeavor. Thank you!
"only bent one needle" 🤣 Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. I was trying to explain to my son why I probably still shake my writing tools!
Thank you so much. Because of you I could repair my moms old technical drawing pens

When cleaning old, dried-up ink, should I use only water, or do you recommend a particular cleaning fluid?
Thank you for your help, I was able to clean mine and it's working now! Great! 🥳
thank you so much; this is the only video that I know of to help with this problem;
Thanks alot becouse of your tutorial my isograph work again
Hi there , thank you for very useful video, but my pen still doesn’t work but it has rattling noise though. What is my problem then? Thanx.
This was helpful, thank you for uploading.
I could have done with this 35 years ago!

Pulling the metal hair is definitely only good to try if the pen is destine for the garbage after trying all other cleaning methods.
hello, thanks for the video, it helped a lot, but I can't attach the wire at the end, it bends back, what do you think I should do?
thank you for making this video..really helpful!! thumbs up!!

u put ink in.
Luv this video so so much huhu thank you
Very helpfull! Thank , I take apart and clean rapidograph Faber-Castell 0,5 TG iso it was made before 1989.
Btw. how old is your pen?
This pen is about 20 years old.
thanks man :D everything works
The question guys it's, can we use any ink for these pens? I have loads of parker quink and hope u can use it instead of buying brand specific. I truly appreciate any tips. Thanks
No. The instructions say to use only Indian ink, as other inks are corrosive and may destroy the plastic.

Usefull video, but i have broken the needle inside, wich goes in a little tube (the steel hair), is it the end for my rapidograph?
yes but you can just purchase the full cone again rather than buying the whole pen
Can I put a different size/point on this pen?

I have the same 4 pens and all of mine had the hair except for the .25. Hoping the .25 is to small to need one. Did you ever figure it out?

Mugurel B Windex or similar ammonia solution.
