In video 3 of this MacBook Pro tutorial series, you will learn how to create a bootable USB flash drive for installing macOS.
You can easily create a USB install stick for any OS you like, Mojave and Catalina should work as well, more details in this Apple support article: ➜ support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372
Keep in mind however that your MacBook needs to support the version of macOS that you are planning to install. In the case of my upgraded 2011 MacBook only up to High Sierra is supported officially.
If you have installed a new empty SSD already, you may need to download a version of High Sierra from another computer, you can find a link for the download here: ➜ support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969
Simply download the OS from the App Store, and then follow the steps shown in the video to create a bootable USB install drive.
Once finished you can plug the USB stick into your MacBook Pro and install a clean copy of High Sierra, Mojave, or Catalina.
Make sure to format the drive with the APFS filesystem, because this is optimized for SSD and NVMe media.

Thanks for this tut!! It took me all day to start to software. The day before I was able to make a bootable USB after downloading an older version of macOS after 6 hours of seeing, "Untitled is not a good mount", or whatever it said. Today I tried to install it and it turned out to be corrupt... 🙃 I had to stop the process and look for a fix. Then I went ahead and downloaded macOS Sierra 12.6.06 and used a sudo prutil code in terminal to change the version to 12.6.03 in the info.plist file. It was a train wreck, but it showed me that everything doesn't go as smoothly as you hope when working with software.
Now I'm waiting for Sierra to install and thinking about how much I've learned in these two days. My overall trouble shooting hours is 8-9, but eh. At least it's working.

I followed the forum and this video and found that I was unable to install the OS when the SSD was formatted APFS, and kept receiving the error "This volume is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).". I partitioned the drive and reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and was able to install. Is there major advantages to formatting APFS and if so can I reformat after the fact?

Excellent video!!! You need to update 1 step. macOs High Sierra is no longer on App Store and link on the apple page does not help. Instead you can download MDS (Free). Launch MDS and at the bottom left you can click on download mac OS and download most of the macOs operating systems since High Sierra. Next you have to move the macOs High Sierra over to the applications and then follow the remaining steps on your video there after. Definitely a thumbs up and a must sub. Thank you so much.

Do you think I may have RAM or other problems like mobo? I did Apple Diagnostics and no problems were found.
My High Sierra Installation stops at 4mins and gives me the error: "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."

Doesn't work. My newly formatted APFS drive (1 TB Samsung EVO 850) is ghosted and shows "This volume is not formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled)." I tried APFS and APFS (Encrypted) neither of which work... The High Sierra installer was downloaded today (23-May-2021) from Apple and placed on a 32GB USB stick. I'm out of ideas... SSD is from 2017 or so, firmware issue perhaps??

    • @rotorcraft68

UPDATE: I found some mention of needing to already have installed High Sierra before attempting a clean install from a High Sierra USB installer. So I formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled), installed the OS, did all the updates including firmware and then went back to the High Sierra USB installer. I again blew away the disk with Disk Utility and formatted APFS, and now it sees the disk and is installing High Sierra onto an APFS formatted Samsung 850 EVO SSD!
Just in case anyone else has this problem, that's the solution. Apparently the High Sierra firmware updates are required to talk to 3rd Party (internal) SSDs vs. the Apple soldered ones these days. For a company that prides itself on Mac "just works", it sure took a LOT of technical research and other nonsense just to get to a usable HS installation on APFS!

When you turned on your mac to install the ssd with the usb stick, I did not see you open in recovery mode, correct? You just turned it on and went to disk utility to erase and format the ssd.

Thx for all the vids man! Amazing walkthrough. Formatting to APFS wouldn’t let me install High Sierra. To be able to install I needed the Mac OS extended file system but it wasn’t available now in disk utility - after searching RUclips I found you need to go into edit and delete the APFS volume - you can now select the file system you need to install HS

Great video, very thorough, however... I downloaded the Install macOS High Sierra to an external. Can't I simply copy and paste this to a thumbdrive? Or do I need to do like you did with pasting the link into the terminal? Thank you.

I just did this today, copy the SUDO code from "support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372" and change My Volume to the name of your thumb drive. Then follow the steps of enter password, do you want to except, etc. May take a few minutes to format but should have no issues installing to thumbdrive. Cheers

@@ReviewTechTV I did it a few months back, so I do not remember. Though I do remember it was not in the app store. I found a link where you can download it. It's on my external. I have several files that came with it like...HighSierraBasics.icns, HighSierraHardware.icns, HighSierraWhatsNew.icns, Install macOS High Sierra (no file extension, under kind says, application), and a bunch of module audio and tag php files, etc... Like I said, Can I simply put these files on a thumbdrive and then plug it into my non-working laptop that I'm trying to install it on? Thank you! Kim

Hi, thanks for the videos that are very clear ! I followed all the steps successfully, but on the macOS High Sierra installation page, when asking to choose the disk, my "Mac SSD" cannot be chosen as it says "This volume is not formatted as Mac Os Extended ". Indeed, I have just formatted the drive with the APFS filesystem. Do you know what can be done to solve this? Thanks again!
