I agree!! I've been sewing for 40 years but collars and sleeves still make me cringe. This video was SOOOO much more helpful than Butterick's brief and non-helpful instructions! Thank you so much! :) Now for those stupid sleeves and not getting tucks when sewing them in!?! And, when I go by my measurements on the pattern, the garment is waaaay too big...like, falling off my shoulders. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to determine pattern size correctly. And I'm hourglass shaped so they should work pretty well for me, right? Any tips on that? I will search this channel... ;)

I attempted a collar constructed on a simplicity pattern. After 2 days and still unclear, I am here. Ripped off attempted collar, headed to fabric store this afternoon for some extra fabric and fusing. Will follow video instructions step by step. Everything was clear, including understitching! SUPERB !!! I was stumped by my pattern's printed instructions for an almost identical shirt collar, but your tutorial in video form demystified it completely, and I really like your method of sewing up the whole collar first before attaching to the short body, as the pattern's approach of doing it piece by piece attached to the shirt first meant that any mistakes on the shirt body could effectively trash the whole front and/or back pieces....Yikes !!! With your method, if I make a mistake on any of the collar pieces, I have much less to lose and more likely to have enough material to redo the collar pieces 😃 Thank you sooo (sew ??) much !!! have a great day.

Thanks for this! I didn’t trim my seam allowance because my flannel fabric was fraying SO much! it still turned out great. 🌺

This is a really great video! I have sewing experience but have never done a collar with a collar stand. I was having trouble fitting the collar stand to the collar. I was getting buckling because the stand seemed longer than the collar. Using a narrower seam and starting from the middle helped. (I'm making a raincoat using dry oilskin with very little give.)

Oh yes! Those fabrics with no give can be really tricky! Good luck!!

Wow, this is a fantastic tutorial! I'm making McCalls 6696 and it has a lot of slip stitching; I wish I'd seen your video beforehand. I especially love the very sage advice about just getting things done and considering it good practice rather than giving up because something isn't perfect. I am excited to watch your other videos - thank you so much.
