    My Paw-Paw used to sing this song to my mom and my aunt. According to my mom this was the version most similar to the one he sang.

    Our mother sang this ballad to us (myself and my two brothers, Mike and Kelvin) at least twice a week for years. This is the original verses that she sang. Others have modified this original but apparently, this dates back to 1800s and is sung by McClintock in 1928.
