- Free live in Japan in 1972. Quality is rather poor but miracle this has survived. Wonderful version demonstrating Paul Rodgers amazing vocal range. Unfortunately less Paul Kossoff on this tour because of ill health and Andy Frazer no longer with the band. With Rabbit on organ and Tetsu on base.
Paul Rodgers is doing an Amazing job here keeping Free alive despite the failing health of their fellow band mate kossoff. They Sure dont make music like this anymore...
Rodgers one of the greatest voices in bluesy rock ever.
Simply the greatest
Never knew Paul Rogers could play guitar that well.
Wonderful historically important footage. A millions thanks to whoever saved it and whoever made it available🙂👍♥️♥️🙂👍
I can’t believe Rodgers can play guitar that good and sing at the same time!!! Such an amazing musician…!!!
free has got to be my all time favourite band, they were just amazing, they dont make music like this anymore and of course theres no-one can sing like paul!!!
Great profissionalism!
Paul Rodgers plays guitars and sing, covering the gap of Paul Kossof departure! Superb!
He wasn't gone then..just too out of it to play
Incredible video! Paul Rodgers vocal range is amazing and it still is today! Love Paul Rodgers and Free!
One of my favourite Free songs. No Koss or Frazier but still a bloody classic! They were a trully awsome band. Their music has a HUGE influence on me and my music. I think I had the Free story on my turn table for about 3 months running without removing it. Every morning while getting ready for work and last thing at night to put me to sleep I listened to it.
Know exactly what you mean,, it was the first time I’d heard “Lady” on that album.👍
@@thetruth156real3lady same 4 me
Rodgers doing a great job playing that riff and singing at the same time
robo- pope よ
Still has kossoff overtones ,less the vibrato , good stuff
Killed the solo as well. So bittersweet, a heartbreaker indeed.
Paul is a damned fine guitarist.
Rodgers voice makes me want to get down on my knees and thank the gods I am a Free-fan.
Could not agree more. If I could sing I’d want to sing like this. He has balls
And his voice is still silky smooth & on fire decades later!! Love that other famous groups refer to Paul Rogers as "the Voice". Highly regarded by his peers.
Me too 💘💯
Kossoff and Fraser are gods! I was born in 1980 and a mere scratch in my dads nuts when they did the Isle Of Wight festival... Fraser was just 16yrs old!!!! Have loved Free since I was 13yrs old. Both my idols! Real passion in their music. "Love you so", "wishing well", "the hunter", "my brother jake"... some of my favs. They don't make true soul guitarists like these guys anymore - nearest I have found is Chris Cornell!
Free did isle off Wight in 69 and 70 I think Andy frazier was only 15 in 68 when they did the first album tons off sobs
Can’t believe I forgotten the name now I always get the album confused with the band and the band name confused with the album but now I’ve completely forgotten apart from one bit which is Brother now I’ve remembered it’s crying of love and Brother all the way around
A fantastic find. Thanks for sharing, I've not seen it before :)
Paul Rodgers is fantasic.
Really rare footage.. Without Koss & Andy but still fantastic.. Paul and Simon kept the group alive for a while,.. If these guys stayed together for a few more years Free would be as famous as R.Stones, L.Zeppelin etc. One of the gr8st British groups ever for me anyways.. THANK U VERY MUCH 4 the upload, was a big surprise 4 me.. Thanks 👍
Whoa! Paul Rodgers......superb......
This Paul Rogers kid was pretty good. I hope he made it... ;)
Total love and respect for Dewar (RIP) and Trower. I have everything those two did together as well as everything Rodgers/Koss ever did. They were both equally awesome. I never tire of hearing either.
Loved Free better than the Stones anytime...
Thanks for that. Fantastic. There's a massive hole left by Kossoff on that track, but Rabbit does a great job on keyboards. Paul Rodgers was (and still is) so far ahead of the game - I've never heard another singer with such a great voice who uses it to such effect. I reckon it's just soul. If anyone knows of one, my cd collection could do with more variety!
Cry of love the album, Brother
I'm thankful and grateful for this wonderful footage - as LV commented earlier, historically important. This video shows the passion, the heart and the soul with which the great rock bands of the day played.
What a life Paul had, always in great bands, great jams
Amazing. Great. Doesn't matter about the poor sound quality. I love it. Best thing on RUclips??? Thanks for thios.
I was there
WOW!
Thanks for posting this. Heartbreaker is one of my favorite Free songs. You made my day.
Great song, just love Rodgers' vocals, sharp yet smooth, perfect pitch. One of my favourite Free/ Bad Company songs, right up there with Little Miss Fortune. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you for letting us see this rare footage . I love Free a d Bad Company.
Thank you for these uploads. This is gold!
I love the closeup on the keyboard player during Paul's guitar solo!!
@flyvibe71 This concert was in Japan, in a Tokyo stadium in July 1972. Free were the support group for Emerson, Lake and Palmer in their Japanese tour in 1972, also available in RUclips
This is just great. Beast band ever. Thanks for posting. Wish I was back in the early 70s
AWESOME FOOTAGE ! got me thinking somebody somewhere has the rest of this concert .
Looks like VHS from TV to me.
love the harsh over-exposures, faded colors and sepia tones of 1972 16mm film stock.
i whole-heartedly agree....thatz why im STUCK on FREE and CREAM.....the best raw , soulful , deep , real music ive EVER heard ....and seven great musicians playing the music ...it simply doesnt get any BETTER than CREAM and FREE
Damn Rodgers aint bad on guitar.
I saw him when he was guitarist and vocalist for Peace, which was a three piece band which presented a huge challenge burden (Cf Hendrix, Clapton/Cream, Rory Gallagher, etc) PR coped (tho not in their league). In this video at least he has organ support.
Great vid. Thanks for sharing.
Maybe Free's 1971 Sydney concert footage will be found and posted on U-Tube one day. Who knows?
had the pleasure of being kissed (on the cheek) by this wonderful man at glasgow barrowlands
Awesome. Love the title track. Wish I would have actually been there. Heartbreaker is a underrated album.
Good to see Rodgers with real teeth. That was authentic. But Yanks just can't stand anything but white so he had to get them replaced to please the audience.
)O( This man has to be one of THEE Best Rock Vocalist's ive ever fuckin heard!!
The use of organs and synths in a band is generally awesome! This is my first hearing of this and I like it! Thanks acerb for sharing!
Thanks for the upload! I’m working on playing and singing at the same time... it hard to lock in the pocket. Paul’s got it down!
@flyvibe71 Free played only two concerts in Japan in 1972 (Korakuen baseball stadium in Tokyo, July 22 1972, demolished in 1988 and Koshien baseball stadium in Osaka, July 24, 1972).
Thanks!
Thks for this....This was when Music was real before Lipsynking & 1 hit Wonders!!!!!!
i just keep on searching for FREE ...am really digging them more and more and MORE .....
Amazing video. Amazing performance. Saw Free live in 1972 at Lancaster University, Now my son is into them - he's 15
He's 26 and in lockdown. No longer Free!
Thanks for posting this. On the vinyl edition of "The Free Story" the last track was a superb live version of Heartbreaker but the CD misses it out. It's nice to hear another live version 'cause the studio cut doesn't have the same energy.
All I have to say is Free were better than the Rolling Stones. And how good did Paul pull off the guitar parts??? Very very cool!!!
And Purple must've listened to Free, cause he said somewhere that he came up with mistreated from this riff
I agree, I love this song. Never tire of it. One of their greatist!Nice to see PR on lead.Plays well.
@papmjny Yes, Blackmore said in an interview long time ago that Mistreated was based in Heartbreaker's riff
quality is rather good. This is cool classic stuff, thanks for sharing!
Janis, Singapore
Rare clip indeed, thanks for posting the great Free...-1
Wow. I have a huge collection of Paul Rodger concert footage and this is the first time I have ever heard an organ in the band!
Then keep collecting. You haven't really started!
J'ADORE. Berceau de mon enfance.
@AZRacer2000 No one is more or less in Free than any other....and that is what made them so remarkable...however...when faced with the problems that they had to surmount....this incarnation, albeit missing Koss...and the Heartbreaker LP that they were touring behind....was certainly worthy of it's own merit. Bundrick is a GENIUS keyboardist...probably the best B-3 player alive. The heart and soul of Free truly is Simon Kirke! Completely overlooked and underloved!
Has Stood the test of time, and will always amazing
Rodgers managing a perfectly decent guitar solo. Great organ by Rabbit too.
Actually, I didn't know that Paul Rogers was such a good lead guitarist. He played it as well as Kossoff would have pretty much... wow, what a guy, I'm impressed.
Nearly as good as me... ha ha... just kidding... I'm heaps better... just kidding again... :o)
Thanks for posting this.. loved it!
thanks for posting, I have a NTSC tape but cant play it! Missing live FREE video!
Get it transferred before it is too late.
Sincerely.;is the first time I have see an organ in the band.. Thank Acerb for send me
Wow rare indeed. Thanks for the post.
great video!
Simply fantastic. Paul R is the ace
Poor quality the film may be but it is good to get a chance to see the line up with Paul Rodgers playing guitar and Tetsu and Rabbit in the band.Paul with a guitar rather than having the freedom to ramble up to the mike looks odd but he can certainly play a bit!
Classic stuff !! Thanks
Main inspiration for Chris Cornell
I wouldn't argue Jagger's shortcomings...Rodgers is THE VOICE.
I agree. Rock music, like all art, should be a personal thing, and few lived that idea more than this band. Those stares from the cover of Fire & Water which seemed to say - 'This is great, so just like it or lump it'. Well, I've been loving it for 30+ years, and those who 'lumped' it or missed it I just think 'bad luck!'.
Thanks Frozenfish - Heartbreaker is a rarity (even dropped off Free Story on CD), and is yet another Free classic.
Free..in Japan...great live
FREE is een geniale band. Fantastische blues-rock. Ik ken geen slecht nummer van hen. Aanrader dus voor alle blues of classic rock liefhebbers.
Land of the Free.
Holy fuck Rodgers can play a mean lead guitar....I knew he was a multi instrumentalist but his vibrato is brilliant not on kossoffs level but still...hard riff to sing and play that too
Free was such an amazing band and Paul Kossoff was such an amazing guitarist there albums were classic Tons of Sobs,Highway,Fire and Water,Heartbreaker,Live,Best of,Free at Last and Andy Frazier at one point wanted to leave the.band and retire but didn’t because he wanted to make Paul happy and to see him smile again he stayed in the band just for Paul according to an interview and Paul formed his own band Backstreet Crawlers and had several albums that were excellent AC/DC cancelled a tour because Backstreet Crawler was opening for AC/DC because of Paul’s death happened and on the album Free at Last you could tell the band was breaking up when you heard the song Goodbye
*Huge props to Paul Rogers without and Andy Fraser and Paul Koseff and doing this tune justice!!*
What a voice. Still no one to touch him.
Even with Rodgers playing guitar and singing this is still a great band. Not sure the audience in Japan are digging it. Kossoff RIP
They are extremely savy
In his genre, he was and is the best.
Wow great performance!
5*****
It’s one thing playing a riff but playing an emotive solo like that - I can’t believe I just found this out. 🤯
The best, love the band. X
I saw Tetsu with Faces on their farewell tour in '75. Didn't know he played with Free also. (I might have known in the 70's, from reading rock music mags, but I don't know NOW, lol
Awesome ❤
I agree jimmy-it is amazing.Although i count all right now as my favorite free or anyone else-there was nothing like it when it came out.
Mrber44 Kossoff wasn't there. Sadly he was on the drug ridden way to his early passing in March 76. RIP Koss
Witch kind of drugs did Koss use,-RIP Kossoff ? :-(
@@cphburst4422 I think he and drummer enjoyed mandrax, but he most likely took anything going - and getting stoned on grass in those days was new to the rest of the world but standard to the rock scene.
wow...diggin in the basement tapes for this one....cool!
Jupp, he sure is!!
God I love this band. Too bad I was born in -77 instead of -57. Would give my left arm to see em live. :)
I was in Paul Rodger's house twice and just missed him by an hour each time. Now he's stuck in Vancouver and you are all stuck in lockdown!
Free - the ultimate band.
Now that it's on You Tube it is no longer "Rare". Great stuff though. I love the raw energy missing from todays music.
Utube makes vintage fake ?
Rogers' guitar work ain't too shabby. You can tell Kossoff's style has rubbed off a bit on Rogers' approach to soloing.
Damn right! Love em!
Wow!! Very cool!
Check out RABBIT on keys man! I just had a great time watching him ...... He gives the essence of the entire decade of FREE love in a few seconds. Paul Rodgers , when will I get my duet????
Take a listen to Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu and Rabbit album. Some great keyboards but of course the highs are all Kossoff - some of his major creations on this album! He even sings.
Jee-zus they were f*ckin monsters.
Saw Paul Rogers last night on his solo tour - the greatest rock singer ever, Goddamnit.
BEST BAND EVER!!!
Love that big drooling riff. Classic. Free were so damn good. Even though Koss and Fraser were missing at this point, Rodgers shows us once again how it's done. The voice...
I always wonder what goes on in Rabbit's head during his solo. He must heve felt great! Too bad Kossoff had to leave the band, but I've always liked the Heartbreaker album and this footage is a real gem. Rodgers' voice sounds great and he can play a mean guitar!
They put on the 1999 compilation cd "Alright Now" last track. I missed it too! But have a copy now. I think Rodgers was doing a lot of the Guitar/writing about this time, there is distinct lack of Kossoff.
WHAT A VIDEO!
Paul FUCKING Kossoff
AMAZING song dude, thank's so much!
Yeah missing from action but not in spirit. Rodgers turned from the audience in the solo as he just could not replace the great man himself, but still managed to pull it all off.
