I was an only child, and I spent a LOT of time in my room by myself and I used to try new sounds with my voice and mouth just to keep myself entertained. By middle school, we had a choir teacher who told us about this and showed us a video. At the time, I felt so cool because I’d already figured it out, but I didn’t know it was a thing. This was 1982. I doubt I could do it now. I have teenagers at home, so I don’t quite have the same alone time as I had as a child. They’d have me hospitalized if I was practicing and they caught me!
What about scientific evidence to support your hypothesis? Why should drinking water have an effect at all (unless the oral(!) mucosa is really dry = I'm not talking about the inner laryngeal mucosa)? This fairytale is told so often, that I need to comment on this: *The water runs down the esophagus(!), while the larynx is 100% closed by the epiglottis, hence the water doesn't get anywhere near the vocal chords. Many people think the can somehow magically "lubricate" their vocal chords by drinking (water or all kinds of recipes, like milk with honey, etc). That's anatomical nonsense.* The only thing it helps with is enjoying a placebo effect. As for temperature and vocal chord "constriction": first of all, the vocal chords are ligament structures and no muscles, i.e. "active" constriction is impossible. Sure, they are accompanied by the thyreo-arytenoid, vocal and cricothyroid muscles, but it's not reasonable to assume that water running down the esophagus within fragments of a second and with a temperature differential of maybe 10 or 20 degrees is only remotely able to have an effect on the temperature of the inner larynx muscles. The same is true for effects on the vocal chords via thermal expansion. Not only is it impossible to significantly change the temperature of the vocal chords via drinking (maybe it is a bit by inhaling hot steam), but vocal chords are also relatively short structures and the thermal expansion coefficients of organic tissue make the idea of signficantly changing the vocal chord length via a few degrees of temperature differential ridiculous. So what about remote effects via reflexes? The only known reflex in that context is from swimming in extremely cold water / cold water drowning: the larynx is indeed known to shut, but we're talking about the glottis diameter and not vocal chord tension, hence it only impairs breathing resistance. Now let's hypothesize for a second that for some weird reason you are indeed right and cold water constricts your vocal chord: constriction = increased tension = higher frequency. Now drink ice water and see for yourself if it turns you into a castrate or super-soprano. I have my doubts...

This is a wonderful introductory video. I watched some introductory videos from Miroslav Grosser and Anna Maria Hefele from Germany about 3 years ago, and I'm still not as good as you ( lol ). I notice our NZ native birds are quite responsive to the overtone sounds, especially the songsters like our native, the Tui. A caged sulphur crested cockatoo kept at a nearby animal park gets excited by these sounds as well. I also practise throat whistling as it carries a long way, and one can reach lower notes that whistling with the front of the mouth will not reach. Both means of sound production are good for calling the horses from some distance. So, yes, my experience of overtones with animals is similar to yours. Keep making videos, as you present this topic very well.

Nice vid. At 3:34 there is a one quick reference to 'practice with the tip of your tongue.' Practice what? The teachers nearly always give much attention to tongue placement, specifically the tip...this vid doesn't. Do you have more instruction on that? I see you have more vids...I'll look there.
I haven’t read all the comments but I wanted to mention “muppet” voices. Bowing of the throat like the Kermit, the frog voice can create another overtone. Likewise, the Cookie Monster voice is good for some of the deeper overtone singing styles. Possibly good to note as well, that there is an overtone, which comes through the nasal cavity, another from the tongue to the roof of the mouth shape, bowed throat, overtone, as well as the low drone similar to Buddhist monks which can create overtones as well.
You are awesome Emm Bronte and I am very glad you took the time to share this. I have been practicing for about a year now but learned several new techniques because of you and will continue working on it. I am sharing this video with my lady so we can do this together! :) Much Love.
Hey lovely, hmmm I have noticed this as well. I do believe it depends on the individuals unique vocal range and comfortable resting base note. You can achieve overtone polyphonics in falseto as well which does change the sound. It will also vary across different styles of overtone singing xx

wow, you've just solved a mystery for me which I'd had for years. Me and my soul mate were out chanting in the wilderness one time together the OMM sound and suddenly there was a new beautiful sound created which grew and grew complete drowning out our individual sounds. It was mind blowing and I realize after watching this that we'd created an overtone.

Razmik Yekiazarian hehe would be pretty cool!! I know my friend can talk with it but he does the traditional Mongolian throat singing so is able to create those very low vibrations xx

I look forward to hearing what you’ll create in the future once you fully commit to it. Once you do I would like to hear your interpretation of Inner Universe by Origa. I’m sure it will be vastly different from her original but interesting and enjoyable as well none the less.
Z-Mack Dos 6 Echo Thankyou amazing human!!!! I will keep practicing and looking forward to exploring the song xox
Every time I play a part of you making these sounds my cat goes nuts meowing!
Haha my cat does the same! xx
Emm, I think you would benefit from a better microphone.
choochoochooseyou Thankyou! Is there one you recommend that I can connect to my computer? Xx
I'd recommend a Zoom H2 or H2n recorder. I have the H2 and it is great for recording of all kinds, and is very popular among musicians. The H2n is the same technology, just presented in a newer exterior package and easier-to-read display.

Andrew Pearce Thankyou so much for your recommendation!! Xoxox
You're welcome! I forgot to mention: you can of course connect the H2 to your computer to simply use it as a microphone
;-)
Andrew Pearce Do you know if I will need a sound card or is it a USB stick
I am able to plug in? X
My ears my eyes stunned by you 🥰
alex a wow thanks Alex that’s so lovely 😊Hope you are having a good day!
I been trying this for a couple weeks, I can’t wait to figure out my own style with it
Hopefully you've stuck with it! xx
Nice vid. At 3:34 there is a one quick reference to 'practice with the tip of your tongue.' Practice what? The teachers nearly always give much attention to tongue placement, specifically the tip...this vid doesn't. Do you have more instruction on that?
I see you have more vids...I'll look there.
Wow, this is otherworldly ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! Xx
Watching you just sink into it helped me understand. I can produce a few soft overtones now. Let’s hope practice helps
How is your practice going Xena? xx
@@HarmonicPolyphonic ooh haven’t thought about it as much lately. But I’ll keep working on it!
Cows love polyphonic singing. So beautiful and mystical
They really do!! They are so cute xx
You are awesome Emm Bronte and I am very glad you took the time to share this. I have been practicing for about a year now but learned several new techniques because of you and will continue working on it. I am sharing this video with my lady so we can do this together! :) Much Love.
This was such a lovely comment thankyou! Enjoy practicing together xx much love
You did a beautiful job! I’m trying to learn, too, and it’s fun feeling your voice move around your head like it’s traveling.
That is a great and creative metaphor! So true xx
You are a very good teacher. I have noticed that all overtone singers only sing certain notes on their polyphonic tones and no others. Why is this?
Hey lovely,
hmmm I have noticed this as well. I do believe it depends on the individuals unique vocal range and comfortable resting base note. You can achieve overtone polyphonics in falseto as well which does change the sound. It will also vary across different styles of overtone singing xx
Wow 😍 😍 I actually thought you used a voice effect.... It's unbelievable
Thankyou so much
it sounds so magical
Elicia Ward thanks lovely 🙏🏻
Hi +Emm
I absolutely loved this! I am new to polyphonic singing and am so keen to learn.
What an inspiration you are!
Thank you for sharing.

(listening from Melbourne AU)
Hey girl I am so happy you are learning! Feel free to connect on insta if you have any questions 😊
@@HarmonicPolyphonic Thanks!!
Thank you very much for your help.Have a beautiful day🌞💫
I hope you have a beautiful day too xx
Thank you for this video! I am a voice performance student and am using this to help me find my “ring” through vocal mindfulness practices such as these. :)
Love it!! Amazing to see how many people actually explore overtones~ xox
Hi there - Love this video. I was wondering maybe a new video please on how to quieten the 'normal' voice and up the overtones volume? :)
Definitely I will add that to my list. When I finish my studies I will create more videos 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I'm like a fool imitating the lips while listening to it, but without any sound xD.
Indorian hahaha sooner or later you will for sure!!! ❤️❤️
wow, you've just solved a mystery for me which I'd had for years. Me and my soul mate were out chanting in the wilderness one time together the OMM sound and suddenly there was a new beautiful sound created which grew and grew complete drowning out our individual sounds. It was mind blowing and I realize after watching this that we'd created an overtone.
Tanya Brown Hey Tanya, that sounds so special and I’m so happy you were able to create that resonance together 😍Wonder what would happen if you continued to create that together now and experiment!
Very Impressive... Bravo...
It would be Interesting to hear if One can TALK with Polyphonic Overtone...
Razmik Yekiazarian hehe would be pretty cool!! I know my friend can talk with it but he does the traditional Mongolian throat singing so is able to create those very low vibrations xx
Amazzzing!! Thankyou for sharing your experiences and methods!😊👌🙏
Nishad Phatak thank you so much for watching xx
Yesss!!! I get the concept and can do this but how do you make the overtones louder?!? I know practice and consistency is key, but I’ve been trying this for a while and I guess I just haven’t found the sweet spot yet.
Yes it really is practice and the right acoustic environment! Experiment :) xx
wow..do you let the nose vibrate? I mean, do you let air come out of your nose?
Congratulations, I really enjoyed the lesson! :)
Aniello De Sena hey 😊No I don't! Purely from the mouth, contracting and constructing the vocal chords in different ways and tongue placements 🙏🏽
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! It’s absolutely beautiful!!!
Thank you Brianna! xx
Very pleasent voice and well explained, thnx !
Thank you for watching! xx
It's fun, really))) I'm in my childhood again 😂
I agree! Playful xx
it sounds amazing, you look amazing, plus thank you for sharing knowledge! :) would try to practice it as much as possible
That’s so sweet thank you so much. How is your practice going?
You're amazing for a beginner!
It sounds really beautiful ... and what a lovely experience you had with the animals. Thank you. I'll definitely try it.
Thank you so much Angela!! Let me know how you go 🙏🏻
Cool. thanks for the tips! Yay
Thank you Doyle! xx

This is amazing!
Thank you Allison! Xx
This is great my fellow overtone singer! :)
Thankyou!! You sound incredible!!
Just keep playing around Jeffrey! You will get a feel for what sounds good to you
Thanks! I really like how pure and your overtones are :)
Novice or not, this was a very helpful video in gaining understanding of some of the intricacies of singing overtones.
Well done, and thank you.
I’m really happy it was helpful! Xx
whaaaat?😍😍😍😱😱it's amaaaaazinggg
Sarina Jm Thankyou beauty!!!! Xox
I don't really understand what has to happen in mouth/throat to make the sounds. How deep in the throat are the sounds coming from?
Sean Bearly I feel my vocal chords restrict and contract to change the sound xx
Your voice is amazing ~thx for sharing
mbarkmusic wow Thankyou so much!!
How could you teach us such magical Overtone while being so beautiful, how! ^_^ You're pretty.
-From the Philippines.
Thank you Stephen that is kind of you to say! xx
Moa is Aom backwards. Aaaaaoooommm is how the mantra is pronounced. What does it sound like when you use Aom?
Rick Ved Jyotish oooo I will have to experiment!!! Xo
I am able to produce the overtone but it's very faint, how do you amplify it??
Baso hey there I have some updated videos where I go into this xx
Breathtaking video, thanks for doing it!
I'm just curious about one thing: is it possible to sing the guitar part in the pinch harmonics part in Magma by Gojira using the overtones?
Pitíčkárna hello 😃Oooo I will have to have a look and listen 😃Have you started practicing polyphonic singing? I feel Anne Maria Hefle (sorry if mis spelt) is incredible at doing melodies so I can see it would be possible!
Wow! Fantastic, best wishes!
John Rice Thankyou so much!! Best wishes to you too 🙏🏽
