Yeah this is the 2nd highest bridge in Maryland only behind the Bay Bridge. I have no phobias about bridges but driving across the Key Bridge is even a little daunting to me because of it's height above the Patapsco River.

Having grown up there and traveled this bridge my whole life, it is not only a big part of Maryland history, but it is MASSIVE. 185 feet above very deep water leading to the Chesapeake away and then to the Atlantic Ocean. It spans over a major shipping channel to the Port of Baltimore. I’d never in a million years think it would fall that easily. I can only imagine how hard that ship hit one of those supports. I live in Texas now but 98% of my family is back in Baltimore/Maryland. Thankfully, if this had to happen, it happened in the middle of the night in because during the daytime into night it is packed with vehicles. I heard they have rescued two people already. One uninjured and one seriously injured…..praying they are able to rescue/recover those that were crossing it.

It's not about how hard the ship hit it. It's the huge MASS of the ship and its cargo that completely demolished the pier. Once that support was gone, it was a chain reaction after that, like dominoes.

I have had a phobia of bridges ever since I was a little girl. My birthmother died due to a bridge collapse.
The saddest part was the state of Mississippi KNEW the bridge was in desperate need of repair and yet 3 months prior to its collapse they paid the inspector off so it would pass the inspection test.
The investigation due to the collapse found that the bridge was slcompletely rotten all the way through and as a result mississippi was found liable. To this day I am pissed at them because I will never get to meet my birth mom

I have No sympathy for those who allow their port to fall into such disrepair and not provide barriers to protect their bridges from the ships that regularly pass through them.
Or have competent navigators to provide channel passage through critical infrastructure.
The channel will be closed for a few weeks at most.
They'll have those support beams cut out and removed quickly.

Yes they are..I have sailed out of this port hundreds of times .before departing the pilot boards .then directs the tugboats that pull you off the dock to turn you around as you make way..then they are let go they typically don't assist ships the entire channel they are mainly for undocking and docking ..liquid natural gas ships usually have 2-4 tugs assist them the entire channel along with marine police because they are floating bombs

Why did such a busy port not have a substantial fender system to deflect the ship from hitting the bridge .
It looks like there is next to no protection for the piers that support the trusses above.
Makes me wonder how many other bridges are vulnerable to the same fate !

I'm a truck driver and just happened to go on that bridge the early morning before. As i was going across it the thought crossed my mind that i wouldn't survive if it went down. Less than 24 hours later.😮 If my order was a day late. Thats ruff with it being pretty cold too. I have sympathy for them folks and the families of them as well

It looks to me as if city workers were on the bridge with their flashers on and no traffic. It looks like they were there to observe the ship. I’ve looked closely at this video and I do not see any other vehicles other than the ones with the flashing lights.

So they did know what was going to happen. The reason the whole thing came down was that ship was pushing the bridge so it sort of got dragged.

The fire chief said a few minutes ago that there were between 7 and 20 vehicles, he said they believe for sure that 7 is the number of vehicles they know were there

I went over this bridge twice a day for 28 years, saw so many ships passing under. The view changes everyday with the weather, absolutely beautiful. I can remember driving over in a thunderstorm and lightning was striking the steel trusses above the road, and more than a few white knuckle trips in the snow. I don't commute anymore thank god, but I miss the bridge.

That the bridge collapsed so spectacularly and horribly fast ~ they are gonna have to look at safer bridge design surely in the reconstruction? A ship hitting one strut shouldn't have brought so much of the bridge down.

I work in the media and we've done lots of stories on America's infrastructure over the years. Our bridges have been in need of repair or upgrading for decades!
'More than a third of the nation's bridges are in need of repair, and over 43,000 are in poor condition and classified as "structurally deficient," according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.' -CNBC (March 17, 2022)

@@brianchapman8531 Thanks ~ Looks like you have this Baltimore bridge tragedy to take your media reports forward, and with greater urgency with present evidence of catastrophic collapse of that bridge. Best wishes from UK where we also have equal concerns about 'safe infrastructure'.
