Technically correct. The best kind of correct!
That was helpful. 😂
LMAO
🤣
Kinda rad that y'all have been friends that long. Really dig that you two are going through the franchise so methodically.
Alex: The channel was my idea... and Star Trek was my idea... *triumphant laugh*
I don't mean to sound so sycophantic, but you guys are the best. 😄
Even though I already saw this,I appreciate that you put these out these new cuts to give us something of yours to watch while we wait for season three!
Yes. I'm loving the various bits from the live stream. I just wasn't in a position to camp out with that for several hours. Plus, it's something to watch from them until May 6 arrives.
Catch 22 = no matter what you do there is no way to win. Double Edged Sword = in winning you also hurt yourself
Josh: I don't want to dox our ages, but we were both born in the 90s...
Alex immediately: Well, I'm almost 30...
Josh: ... well (shakes head), we're 29!
😂🤣
I know who they are
For some reason, I missed JD's question about Dr B w/ no Data or Pulaski w/ no Worf... ban that guy! He's nothing, but trouble stirring crap up!! 🤣
The early TOS episode "The Naked Time" allowed those very early viewers of trek to learn a lot about the regular characters of the series. It was a quick way to create back stories about the characters' interest and emotions. I think "The Naked Now" was an attempt to do the same thing with the TNG crew. It was that more so than trying to connect to TNG's TOS roots.
*Two Bears, One Shuttlepod*
Love the reactions and so excited to rewatch this with fresh eyes.
Earl Grey is one of my favorite teas. There's nothing really wild about it, it's a pretty common tea.
Good job, Josh. Now Alex won't be able to unsee... 'the maneuvers' 😁
A double edged sword is something in your own hands that can potentially backfire to harm you, a Catch-22 is a position and no-win scenario you find yourself in at the hands of another person.
If the term “Catch-22” seems arbitrary, it’s the title of a novel that was so influential that its name became the common term for the scenario.
Guys, DON"T just use the Blu-Ray for the Season 3 finale & Season 4 premiere! You must 100% watch them separately! It's one of the best moments in Star Trek history, and it will be ruined if you watch the 2 episodes edited together. (They weren't edited like this until the DVDs/Blu-Rays.)
What?
Wow. I’ve never had the misfortune to experience that outrage.
Just checked my box set and that's not the case. Part 1 & Part 2 are split across not only episodes, but 1 ends a disc and 2 starts the next disc.
@@targetaudienceExcellent.
Now, wait months in between like we had to when the show was broadcast. 😜
Still triggered from waiting.

Love that you know that Miles is the most important character ever !! but he Must Suffer
Riker, at the end, for the 365th time, he is offered his own command and turns it down. 😜
And by pure coincidence that's the exact number of women he hits on per episode.
Double edged sword, a decision that has both advantages and disadvantages. We approached the Ferengi with weapons down and shields lowered. The double edge sword of this decision is they know we come in peace but we are vulnerable doing an attack.
A Catch-22 is a situation that cannot be solved because the solutions contradict each other. I need experience to get the job but can’t get the job without experience.
Kirk goes back in time to rescue McCoy and falls in love with Edith Keeler. he wants to grow the relationship, but can’t if he is going to rescue McCoy.
Terms are very similar, but slightly different.
Excellent breakdown and examples.
When you get to April 2002 don’t forget to watch the futuerama Star Trek episode
When's the next Star Trek reaction, bruh!
(said in the most bro voice I can come up with or you can imagine in your heads😝)
May 6th
Agree on holodecks. I'd never leave. Think of the possibilities: Scenarios where you could fly or float or go to the vaunted shores of Pacifica for a moonlight swim. 24/7 sex orgies with characters that fit your particular tastes (talk about a Riker Manuever). Kill your enemies - yet commit no crimes!
Of course, I think most of all I'd play "Star Trek" scenarios in a holodeck. I'd be even more obnoxious than Wesley Crusher about saving ship!
TNG not only got me to try Earl Gray for the first time, but I now purchase it regularly on those rare occasions when I feel like drinking tea instead of coffee. It’s an acquired taste, but I have acquired it. Would love to see you guys try it live.
26:40 - Catch 22 and Double Edged Sword are not interchangeable phrases. A 'Catch-22' is when an action or it's intent negates or contradicts it's results. It comes from the book that coined the phrase, 'Catch-22,' where the catch is that you can get out of the army by being insane, but if you want out of the army, you're sane. A Double Edged Sword is a plan that has as much chance of hurting the user as the object of the plan, because 'a double-edged sword cuts both ways.'
There’s NO WAY THAT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY WOULD SURVIVE THAT LONG
I hope they stick with the bridge background for the reactions
I love earl grey. If you guys like it, you gotta try a London fog. It’s basically an earl grey latte-super delicious. Also, cream earl grey is very nice, which is just earl grey with vanilla-makes a very nice iced tea.
Give the 80s version of The Twilight Zone a look. There are some excellent episodes.
I drink Earl Grey Tea, use honey to sweeten if you try it. I like 1 or 2 teaspoons.
14:10 ... My favorite wrestlers (nobody asked, but...) are Andre the Giant, The Undertaker and Jeff Hardy. I was fortunate to see Andre, Hulk Hogan and the Undertaker perform live.
I thought he was simply a decent wrestler, but Randy Macho Man Savage had the best interviews.
Is it too early to ask: Kirk Picard?
Too soon
If I don't see some Shasta in your hands, I will think that Shasta spot you did was just a big joke..
Out of curiosity, Josh mentioned that one of the changes he would make in s2 (or 1) would be to (of course) keep Dr Beverly which I wouldn't disagree with, but if you could keep Puslaski and Crusher (maybe as the #1 and #2 in the medical department creating friction in their approaches), would you? I think it often gets framed as Beverly or Pulaski, but what about both if the budget and the stories could handle it?
“If the stories could handle it” carries a lot of the weight of that question. If the stories could handle it then yeah I don’t see why not
I think that's terrible. There has to be a single head of medical on a starship. It's like asking to have two captains. And neither character could take a demotion and be subordinate to the other. It HAS to either be Pulaski or Crusher (or an alternate character).
@@trekkiejunk That's... why I said a #1 and a #2. And I never mentioned a demotion so it feels weird you set up a strawman argument. Also, becoming CMO of the flagship of the Federation is probably a promotion which would mean that Crusher and Pulaski were promoted onto the Enterprise, but nothing says they had to be promoted as a CMO.
After all, plenty of people that are aboard the Enterprise aren't the captain, CMO, department heads, etc. In fact, most are not. There are plenty of doctors in our military that are not of the same rank or of the same rank (though titles and responsibilities may differ) and they all exist in the same system.
Riker, Crusher and Pulaski all hold the rank of Commander, but guess who's next in the chain of command if Picard is away or out of commission? Not Crusher or Pulaski. For that matter, if Picard and Riker are out of the equation, guess who's in charge of the ship next? Again, not Crusher or Pulaski. It'd be Data with a rank of Lt Cmdr, a rank below both doctors.
But, let's entertain your notion of a demotion, shall we? Because it does happen, amusingly enough. In s2, it's our understanding that Crusher is gone b/c she's the head of Starfleet Medical. That is a clear promotion for which she comes *back* to the Enterprise which is a demotion. I say it's a promotion b/c being the CMO of a ship, even the flagship of the Federation is less than being the head of all of SF Medical.
Now, I will apply a modern day parallel here, but the superintendent of US military academies tend to be generals and admirals and I didn't look too deeply, but I didn't find if any have been (I suspect at some point, maybe) lower than general/admiral. And, technically, they tend to be lieutenant generals and rear admirals.
Crusher wasn't even a captain. And, even if they had promoted her to captain, she still wouldn't rank high enough. Now, I'm avoiding pointing out another thing in my favor when it comes to this b/c it's a bit of a spoiler for the guys and I want to avoid it in case they read this (and Josh will likely see a notification for someone answering in a thread he responded in). But, if she was promoted to a flag officer rank, coming back to a starship to be CMO and back to being a Commander is a massive demotion I can't see anyone in an organization, military or otherwise, taking.
Anyway, all of this is to say that 1) what you propose doesn't hold water 2) you kinda missed the point of this hypothetical 'fun' exercise in a fictional show which has often bent the rules (any show does this, really) to accommodate stories and characters.
@@Vulcanerd Even if they had the same rank, if there is only one Chief Medical Officer, whichever one of them is the Chief Medical Officer would make the final medical decisions on the ship and the other one would be subordinate since she would have to follow the orders of the Chief Medical Officer even if they had conflicting medical opinions.
Since it would be unworkable to have two CMOs on the ship because neither would have the final decision making authority, if the show had both Pulaski and Crusher, one would be the CMO and the other would be her subordinate even if they held the same rank. It would be unlikely that either would accept the subordinate role. Even if there were no demotion in rank per se, it would be seen as a demotion in one's role or position within the organization to go from being the final decision maker to being subordinate to another who makes the final decisions.
Who said having two CMOs?? People can't be this obtuse. I specified a #1 and a #2. They're in an organization with ranks, if they have a problem being someone's subordinate, they're in the wrong organization. What's more, how did they get to this point in their careers if they couldn't be subordinate to someone? Even Picard is subordinate to other officers and to Starfleet Command. So long as you're in a system with a chain of command, you're subordinate to someone else. If you can't accept that, again, you're in the wrong line of work.
Our military has people with the same rank, but where operational command is clearly delineated. That's why a doctor on a naval ship would never take command if there are other officers with the appropriate expertise still alive/around. You can't seem to wrap your mind around two officers, with equal rank, but in which one is given authority over another. In the same way a captain of a ship doesn't cede his captaincy just b/c another captain or admiral comes aboard.
Your argument relies on suppositions. You assume that being assigned to the Enterprise would be a demotion if one can't be the CMO. People are promoted to various posts w/o being a department head and that would be the case in the hypothetical scenario here. Crusher is assigned to the Enterprise as CMO, Pulaski is assigned to the Enterprise as a second doctor, subordinate to the CMO, both are commanders (naval vessels often have multiple doctors especially if they're as big as the Enterprise D). How is this such hard concept to wrap your mind around? For that matter, they could have made it so that Pulaski is assigned to the Enterprise as a CMO and Crusher as a second doctor under her command. Doesn't matter, so long as there's a clear chain of command. Oh, then there's the little detail that Pulaski *wanted* to be on board the Enterprise.
But, let's entertain your notion that a move like this would be a demotion for someone... Well, Crusher was at Starfleet Medical, normally, our military academies are run by superintendents that are lieutenant generals and rear admirals. If that holds true for Crusher, that means she was promoted to a flag officer *then* came back to the Enterprise demoted at least by 2 ranks (possibly 3) *and* being CMO would certainly be a demotion in responsibilities compared to her previous post. The other option (and b/c there's no mention of Crusher being promoted beyond Commander in the TNG era probably and *precisely* b/c it makes no sense for her to be promoted to head of SF Medical as a flag officer only to come back a season later as just a commander again) is that she assumed the head of SF Medical as a Commander then came back to the Enterprise as a Commander which would, by your logic, still be a demotion b/c of the title and responsibilities involved. Either way, your argument holds no water. In a real military or by the actual story that unfolded for Crusher between s2 and s3.
The whole point of this line of question was meant to be a fun, little hypothetical of having, both, Crusher and Pulaski aboard. If that were the case, you could do anything, really, it's a fictional show. But, there's no reason why you couldn't have Crusher and Pulaski assigned to the ship as the CMO and second in command of the medical department and, for that matter, both with the same rank. Or make them different ranks if you can't wrap your mind around the notion that people with the same rank are serving together in militaries around the world, but with a chain of command in place in which one is superior in authority over another.
At this point, the level of obtuseness and/or stubbornness is just exasperating.
How did Patrick Stewart do the Picard maneuver prior to Season 3? Color me confused....
Does release order mean you will be overlapping TNG with DS9 and DS9 with Voyager? That's how millions of us originally watched it.
lol yes
@@targetaudience -- That's a pretty cool plan. No one's doing that. I've been watching RolyPolyOllie's reactions of DS9, and he keeps having to go back and watch a TNG episode to get context for something on DS9. And then when he does get the context, it doesn't have the same impact, because he was supposed to have seen it a while before the show, not right before it. He also started by watching all the movies first, before he watched any TNG or TOS, so there's a lot of lost appreciation there. I'm so glad you're doing everything in order.
@@targetaudienceI’d rather you finish TNG first.
@@trekkiejunkthat kid is weird
That was a problem for DS9. While it was going through it's usual growing pains in it's first couple of seasons, it was at the same time as TNG in it's prime. DS9's first two seasons were still much better than TNG's first two seasons.
I would pay to see you guys try Tea, Earl Grey, Hot, for the first time. But will it be as good as the Replicators make it? Honestly if you try it, my favorite Earl Grey tea is made by Twinings.
someone gave me a tin of Earl Grey tea while TNG was still on the air for the first time. It's actually very good tea, I recommend it. Nice flavor. It became my favorite tea. I especially like the loose tea in the Twining's brand

A Catch-22 situation is a no-win scenario because it's a circular dilemma. It's basically a chicken or egg situation. If I recall right, in the book, the only way you could get out of military combat was proving you were insane, but not wanting to go into combat proved you were sane. It's the situation Corporal Klinger had in the old M*A*S*H show.
When something is a double-edged sword, it's something that comes with tradeoffs. Therefore, it cuts both ways. For example, technology allows students to learn from home, but now there's no such thing as getting school off for a "snow day" because you can take your classes from home.
16:50 "Deadpool 3 should be fine." Show a little enthusiasm, it will be the greatest movie ever known to humans.
I generally don’t see movies in theatre anymore, and I’m absolutely going to the theatre for that one
Do you think the Enterprise could do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs?
Parsec is a distance, not a time (or is that the joke?)
You guys are great. 29??!! Same age as my firstborn! I guess you guys seem older to me, probably because my son still lives in my goddam basement
Patrick Stewart doesn't like Earl Gray tea, which is made from bergamot (but I'm sure he gets it sent to him allllll the time.)
The TNG producers leaned away from the Riker/Troy relationship, as Riker was to be the Kirk-ian lothario of the series, but Jonathon and Marina both said they kind of kept it going on their own.
Ben Browder and Claudia Black did the same thing on "Farscape" a few years after this. I believe the network wanted the same thing-the male main character having a new love interest every week, kind of like Kirk.
Are you going to watch the final episode of "Webster" starring Emmanuel Lewis? I kid you not, it's an official crossover with Season Two of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
My understanding is that "Catch 22" refers to including everything or applying to all of the above while the phrase "a double edge sword" refers to a thing that both hurts and helps or that both heals and destroys. So these should be very different phrases if you apply them thusly.
"Catch 22" is a legal loophole that prevents a get out clause from being invoked. Originally, "you can only get out of the air force if you're insane, but you'd have to be insane to join, so you can't leave."
An example of a Catch 22 would be, "I can't get a job because I don't have a car. I can't get a car because I don't have a job."
Bruh Pulaski is awesome I love Pulaski

Obviously Star Trek will keep your channel busy for a good while, but here I am hoping for a Stargate Series reaction eventually.
That would be nice. SG1 was great, Atlantis even better (imo) - wish it had lasted longer.
If we had replicators, I have no doubt we would still have to pay licensing fees for the templates we used. Want to replicate a hamburger? Well, you have to pay to use the template for the type you want. Cargill already does that with seeds. When you buy seeds from Cargill, they're genetically designed to produce sterile crops that can't be replanted and grown. You have to go back to the company every time to buy more seeds when you want to plant crops. I'm 100% convinced that designing a template to produce anything would be complicated and you would pay for every use.
Yep, but I’m sure there would also be websites where you could get access to “similar” templates for free if you catch my drift.
Guys, the Ryker maneuver is actually comes in the movies, but yeah, the one over the leg move that shot ranks, cause he has a bad back and that’s the way he sits in a chair so he added that into the show the other thing with Picard pulling the uniform down was a request because Ron being an old Air Force navigator They always gave officers crap in the military for having a wrinkled uniform so that’s one of the reasons why the uniforms are the way they are and next generation because Ron didn’t want any wrinkles in the uniform so Picard pulling down on the uniform is for vent, creases and wrinklesat Rodenberry request

That's where Google comes in. Search paramenters "celebrity name nude". Sometimes you just hit the jackpot. I'm sure Google has other uses.
Two positions missing
1 chief of the boat. By default it is Obrien and it does explain why at times he is manning an officer’s station
If you are at all familiar with naval and starfleet ranks star trek eventually merges senior crewmen (your chiefs and petty officers) with the warrant officers , but not yet….. little is said about non commission ranks …..
The other position is the officer of the watch…. By default the phrase “you have the conn” is the closest approximations….. in a Matter of Honor one could argue that worf is the officer of the watch, hence his irritation when the one exchange officer not communicating with him…..
Much later in the series will be a specific reference of someone being the officer of the watch (but not in those terms) and that character being rather unlikely right now from your point of view….. this is vague enough not to be a spoiler
Teleporters and replicators would put everybody out of work except for the people who make teleporters and replicators.
Double-edged sword means it cuts both ways so be careful. eg: Watching RUclips is entertaining. Watching RUclips also makes me lazy.
Catch 22 is when one thing causes something else to happen and visa versa. eg: watching RUclips makes me more lazy. Being lazy makes me watch more RUclips.
