PATRON TAKES now includes ALL 3 series we are currently reacting to! We respond to our Patron's takes on this past week's episodes of Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, & Star Trek TNG. All of these reactions are on the channel if you haven't watched them yet!
May I please ask, if you guys plan on watching it when it aired in order, ST: Deep Space Nine, when it begins in TNG's sixth season? Like, when you guys get to S6, you guys will start watching DS9? I hope ya'll are going to!
If you are going to do that, could you include chapter markers so we can see where each series is?
@@Musicitaagreed. One time through GOT is enough for my lifetime. 😀
Please set up chapter tabs if possible.
It was the Enterprice C. Not a new D or alternate D.
The Enterprise D is a galaxy class, the Enterprise C is/was an Ambassador Class.
Probably safe to say… if you do a live reaction event to the TNG S3 finale, it will go much better than your S2 event. 😀
Yes
Josh & Alex have said they won't be streaming S3 finale live. I think this is a good decision (for reasons I obviously can't say here). Much better that they have time to process it properly.
@@CaminoAir part of the problem with livestreaming a reaction (on youtube) is because you cant put up in split screen what you are reacting too…. You can ONLY get those who can put whatever you are watching on a seperate device.
AND you are only going to get those who CAN tune in at a specific moment
@@CaminoAir YES.
Plus they already watched it
Frakes, Spiner, Sertis and Dorn were all voices in the cartoon series Gargoyles. They worked well together.
08:15 if you are only interested in the Trek takes
Too late for me, but thanks. (I did watch BSG, but never had any interest in GoT.)
Thanks, saved me a lot of time
trust me, TNG only gets better from here. season 5 is my favorite season overall.
Alex is going to have to burn that T-shirt after Barclay.

TNG is the best Trek. No other show comes close.
@@adamrenfrow Ever heard of the original show?
Having kids is the scariest thing. It's a lot of responsibility and hard work to ensure the child survives and knows enough to make the right decisions and have a happy life. It terrified me, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. As a matter of fact, I wish I had my children earlier in life because of the joy and purpose they brought to my life. The Offspring is an amazing episode.
Yes, it’s the most difficult and most rewarding thing in life.
Fun fact regarding The Offspring, the initial actor who was in the weird sexless body suit was the same actor who played Trent in Angel One from season one who was small and wore a similar outfit as Riker with one nipple out. As he is small it worked to match Lal's figure once she chose her sex and image.
I saw a magazine article back from 1994. Both Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart list 'The Offspring' as their favorite episode of the series.
Alex has resting not-talking-to-you face.
[J/K] lol!
This was a great "patron takes" segment!
Nice to hear the patron comments and those of Alex and Josh.
Also, I am commenting to help with the engagement algorithm.
Season 3 of TNG began something almost unheard of in television, maybe still rare today too...the acceptance of scripts from non-professional writers. Fans could actually submit their scripts to the show. Yesterday's Enterprise was one of those scripts. With some tweaks, a fan-submitted script became one of the most beloved episodes in Star Trek.
It took me way too long to realize you were not talking about Star Trek…
Filler power, here we go!
More than half of this video is about Trek but sure my guy. Your powers of observation are over 9000.
Great discussions as always Alex and Josh. Thanks.
To add to the end discussion, I don’t believe that everyone is called to get married or have children, but I do think it’s good to consider a couple of things: (1) the sacrifice and effort whoever gave birth to us or raised us went through, and consider passing on that gift to someone else (or more), and (2) for those who have regrets about how their father or mother or guardian raised them, this is a chance to do the opposite and give your child what you didn’t have. Anyway, blessings to both of you guys. Children are indeed a huge risk and responsibility, but can also a great reward.
Whoopi Goldberg is actually an incredible dramatic actress when she wants to be. You guys should see The Colour Purple if you haven't already, and definitely have Kleenex ready. She was also fantastic in The Long Walk Home, another movie worth a look.
"Yesterday's Enterprise" is definitely on the Top 10 list for the greatest TNG episodes. And there's more yet to come....
"In this economy?"
I've noticed that a lot of scifi shows don't hit their stride until the 3rd season... they just have to get to that point.
You cannot live in fear of losing something so much that you are not willing to experience the joys that often come with having that thing, because you are then only losing out on that joy!
I really enjoy the comments from the Patrons. On Monday, we get to see you react to a third TTC (True Trek Classic) in a row. Those trifectas are pretty rare. Keep up the great work, guys.
Regarding children…
“I ain't so afraid of losing something that I ain't gonna try to have it.”
-Zoe Washburn, “Firefly”
The caveman genetic memory may be there. "Oh you birth child. Me protect." 2 weeks later: "You protect child. Me go fish with Og".
The sacrifices a parent makes are astronomical. The rewards are few, but they are immense. I have four daughters (Thank you for your sympathy) and they are all grown now, and while I have a tenuous grasp on sanity as a result, I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
So this is what a schizophrenic person sounds like.
Its wild to me that the Tasha Yarr episodes are Yesterdays enterprise and Code of Honor, I don't know if there is a larger divide in quality between those two episodes in the entire series.
I'd say the tropes they mean in this case refer to episodic television GENERALLY having major, massive life-changing events occur... that get forgotten once the episode is over - the reset button being pressed. And that's definitely the case for many parts of TNG. Not all of it, but some events don't get touched on again when they really should and it can be incredibly frustrating.
The unheralded, unprecedented appaearance of badass Capt. Garrett finally dispel'd the lingering stench left by "Turnabout intruder". The TOS movies had played footsie with the idea of women in captain's chairs, but this was the first time for the real deal, and she was at war!
i always loved the saying "if your kids are a bunch of assholes it's because you're an asshole."
helping my wife run a home daycare for the past 10 years i'd say the accuracy of this statement is like 95%
Good idea to combine reactions. Creates curiosity for shows not seen. 👍
Waiting for the next episode. I can't wait! 😊
I'll be interested to see if a future episode makes both Josh and Alex cry. I'm sure everyone knows which episode I mean. Big, strong men came up to me the next day with tears in their eyes and said, "Sir, did you see Star Trek last night?" Okay, they didn't call me "sir," but the rest of that is true. It's the episode that made EVERYBODY cry.
Random person: Says an episode of bad because of a trope. Then refuses to explain why the trope is bad, or even what the trope in question is.
Totally fair.
In "Yesterdays Enterprise" I thought it was over the top when Guinan felt the need to get in Tashas face and yell "you shouldn’t be here at all. Youre supposed to be dead! And i know it was a death without meaning."
Even if she does believe its true that's a cold blooded and rude thing to tell someone!
Even a tragically short life is still worth living.
I personally wouldn't say episode 15 is where Star Trek starts, maybe there is a noticeable improvement and good episodes are more consistently spaced. But who watches the watchers, booby trap, the enemy, and the defector are all fantastic episodes that really do a good job representing what is Star Trek and I would say all are elevated above the previous seasons with exception of perhaps one or two episodes.
I did agree when the one patron said the best was yet to come, and I think these couple of episodes are some of the strongest, but I am really looking forward to the reactions for most of the rest of the season. There is a couple that probably will just be "ok, but still more great ones left. I feel pretty confident you will like the next episode. The one after that I am less confident in. It's a kind of fun episode, but I think it gets a bit of a mixed reception depending on who you ask.
Can't wait for when you start Star Trek DS9. It also only starts getting good in Season 3 ;)
Most people have kids because they WANT kids. When they should be thinking, "am I READY for kids?" With the cost and extra "stuff" that kids have to deal with these days, I tell my kids and I would say this to EVERYONE else, "Don't have kids."
I can literally make myself cry just thinking about Lal
Off topic, but you're probably getting pretty close to the end of the season in Patreon. Any plans to do another finale live stream, like you did with Shades of Grey? I can't be the only person here who would love to do that again with the season 3 finale.
The thing about TNG season three is not necessarily that it's one banger after another, it's that the CRINGE of season one is GONE. They're not all bangers, but there are very, very, very few mediocre or disappointing episodes. That's mostly true going forward, but especially true of season three.
I think the commenter that didn't like the episode was maybe not really pointing out a trope but that they know it's episodic so Lal will just be here for this episode and maybe that was back in their mind the entire time. I don't know what tropes The Offspring would have been emulating aside from a parent losing their child, but I feel it's a very unique and excellent sci-fi premise. Maybe they're referring to the TOS episode "Requiem for Methusela" where Rayna is an android and learns how to feel and dies. But to me that's hardly a trope.
Oh it's both of them posted at the same time. That makes a lot of sense considering I was like. What are they talking about? And then I remember? Oh yeah I haven't seen game of thrones
There's a particular episode this season that, if you don't like it, I'm gonna get upset.
Both of these TNG episodes are good and there are still some great bits of Season 3 yet to go. And then Season 4. And then Season 5. And then (you get the idea).
It's been quite the journey and there's still lots more to explore!
As a Trek fan, as much as I love ToS, I do think NexGen did ensemble cast writing better
That said, any criticism we may have about ToS writing, it is far and away better than most of what was on Television in the 1960's
Likewise, NexGen did a great job of raising the bar for Television writing in the 1980's
I think there was some characters that they fell short with as far as developing them and giving them interesting stuff in terms of TNG. But there is no question they raised the bar. I don't know if we ever got the feeling of a friendship like Kirk, Spock, and McCoy gave off. But Data and Geordi came close. And we got a bit of a different dynamic between Picard towards both Data and Wesley, where he was almost more of a parent to them in many respects.
I pray you watch the whole series, and I will be there to watch your reaction. The coming episodes and seasons are interesting.
If Josh doesn't want children, maybe Alex could wear an IUD.
12:32 - for me, the only "ambivalent" reaction that surprised me was for WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS. It's a very very very highly regarded (and often very highly rated) Trek episode, and one that brings me to tears every time.
But then again I think the philosophically atheistic direction the episode went didn't seem to sit well with Alex and Josh, while for a lot of Trekkies that incredible interaction between Picard and the tribe's matriarch is absolutely what Trek is about.
Their ambivalence for other top tier episodes like DEJA Q or BOOBYTRAP is a bit more understandable and not as shocking (though for me they absolutely blew me away watching them in their original 90's run). But I guess how much they've loved episodes like THE BONDING and THE ROYALE goes to show that Josh and Alex balance it out by showing us appreciation for eps that are really underappreciated by most people!
I agree quite a bit with this. Watchers doesn't bring me to tears, but I think it's one of the stronger episodes of the season. I would completely understand someone putting it into their top 5, though I think that might be a tough choice. But yes, the way religion is addressed did seem to put them off. It does make me all that much more curious to see them start DS9 though.
Yeah Deja Q and Boobytrap are ones I had figured they would enjoy more than they did. Which was a bit disappointing. But I can certainly see where they might not check all the boxes for someone.
I think a longer version with more fleshed out scenes would have hit them better, somehow Picard seeing a regression back into religion as a bad thing got took the wrong way. I was also surprised at them not jumping all over particularly the Picard scenes. His quiet "of that, I have no doubt" always gets me.
@@rhaedas9085
"of that, I have no doubt"
That moment, as a young kid, changed my life. Picard became my role model and my surrogate dad in that moment.
"I hope we can have four, five more episodes as good as this one in this season"
Sorry, you can only get three 😂😂😂
"The Offspring" was good, and I enjoy watching it, but as someone who never had kids not wanted them, I guess I didn't relate strongly to it. The whole prospect of parenthood was something I found terrifying, to be that profoundly responsible for the safety, development, and well-being of a living being you can't just shut off and keep in a vault to keep it safe is insane. I haven't a clue how parents manage to retain their sanity, especially single parents.
I hope you guys aren't looking at upcoming episode titles, BTW -- including the title cards of the episodes you're watching. There's a major spoiler coming before the end of this season that you NEED to avoid.
Next episode, will it be ???? And next episode, will Josh have a new #1 episode???
“Decaf trek ”. LOL. I must admit though I’m a fan, TNG might be my least favorite of this era. But I still love it. Captain Garret was amazing. I’m 64, and well remember original TOS when it first aired. TOS is my ❤️ trek, but as a little girl who wanted to be a captain it was very weak that way. Garrett wasn’t “a woman captain”. She was a captain, with a dash of Kirk leadership, who was a woman. Given the times that was massive.
The Offspring is a good episode but is not among my favorites. It is often describes as Measure of a Man part 2, and that is why it falls short for me. We already covered these philosophical questions in that earlier episode and it, when viewed from the Star Trek universe, is already redundant in itself.
Any question of Data being an independent, sentient being would have been thoroughly examined and settled before he was ever accepted into Starfleet Academy or commissioned as a Starfleet officer. There is no way "property" would be placed in a position of command or allowed to lead troops on any kind of mission. In universe, it just could not happen. Measure of a Man makes no sense. In terms of the Star Trek universe, it was out of place, and The Offspring is just more of the same.
Then we have the tired old use of an arrogant, closed mined Federation or Starfleet official to play the villain. This grew old a long, long time ago.
Having said all that, I will admit that this episode was well presented. The acting and directing were fine and it definitely had a strong emotional impact. I just felt like we had already covered this ground before. Good entry into the series but nothing special/
I could see why you view it that way. They do devote a significant chunk of the episode to both Picard questioning Data's creation of this being and of course the admiral.
But I do think the parental aspect of it, and the bond formed between Data and Lal is really where the spotlight of this episode is intended to be and why it shouldn't just be "measure of a man 2".
You made very GOOD points about Measure of a Man,I too thought about the points you made about Data being accepted into Starfleet Academy and his 26 yr career in Starfleet and then one day outta the blue some guy of Starfleet says I'm gonna take you apart for my experiments and you don't have anything to say about. HUH ???

@@targetaudience for future reference. I know there wasn't one today.
The comment that said "skip GoT and go straight to HotD" is wild. I don't think I've ever seen a more twisted AND narrow view of reality.
Not counting "The Offspring," there are 5 or 6 episodes left in this season that I consider to be top tier. And I'll be really interested to see your reactions to the rest of them because I'm having difficulty predicting what you'll think.
Yeah I am not sure if anything will top Yesterday's Enterprise or The Offspring for them personally. Certainly some great episodes yet to come, including of course the finale.
@@ODSTGeneralYT I can think of one, but we'll see. Predicting their take on things can be difficult, even though we know by now mostly what they're looking for.
Game of Thrones is an excellent show, But it's very recent and even worse Alex has already seen it so we are really watching just one reaction. Every episode of this takes away time from Star Trek, of which I believe you still have a few HUNDRED episodes waiting for you (for us).
I think it’s bc Alex has rbf... 🤣❤️
These two TNG eps are top ten, my favorite episodes of the series get served up in season four. 😀
On a serious note... When I was in my teens and twenties, back in the 80s, marriage and children had to be on the table or you had no hope of getting a girlfriend. Today that is not true. Think long and hard before deciding to have kids, and if you do, take your role model and mentoring job very seriously. And if you don't want kids, I wouldn't get married. Too risky given courts are not friendly to men, and women file the lion's share of divorces.
On GoT I watched all the DVD extras first. I felt much better prepared to get everything the first episode was throwing at us.
HoD, eh I’ve come to really dislike prequels.
And now there's one for A Quiet Place. _Joy...._
It's getting better!
I had anxiety disorder before anxiety disorders were cool (to paraphrase a country song) so I kind of worried if I had a kid I would maybe worsen any fears they could have. Also I have a brittle bone condition called osteogenesis imperfecta. Raising a kid like I was can be exhausting, but I also worried if I had a kid who did not inherit it. That I'd be like "Son, that's some able body man stuff I don't understand maybe ask one of your uncles." Non-disabled daughter I sometimes think might have worked for me, have such by birth or adoption, because if I don't understand being an able-bodied girl I think that's kind of okay. Didn't see an ethical way to make that happen though.
Anyway The Offspring I don't think moved me as much, but it is a pretty moving episode. I might not put it quite as high, but I understand others doing so and figured the reactors might.
I am a little worried s3 and future TNG Is being overhyped. There are some good episodes but I dunno about the extreme hype.
'Family' is always the basic stupid answer to any tv show or movie series which doesn't realise that fans are often trying to escape from the sheer committal repetitive boredom of real family life. TNG writers etc were all in their 30s or 40s etc and tend to preach as parents and losing their kids to college, project their own loss, of their kids and themselves. TNG therefore become second-hand surrogate families for the dispossessed which only really works when it remains subtextual rather than bloomin' obvious.
Imo the next 7 episodes rip for me
GOT i got into right away. i had no idea what was happening but i couldnt stop watching.
oddly enough it was The Wire and Sopranos i had a some false starts with before i finally broke through and got really into it. With the Sopranos - I just don't enjoy the mobster genre. and with The Wire it just wasn't clicking at first for me. and who was the idiot that said HoTD was a waste of time? revoke his comment card.
I'm with you guys... Not watching that "stuff" either....
And you end with an Idiocracy reference.....
there Is something . . on the horizon. Just around the corner. Allll I'm saying. Just wait.
I love TOS, original BSG, TNG, BSG, and GOT. I fully disagree with people that say Star Trek starts now. But they must pick one, for rewatch ability. I would have to pick TNG.
I think a lot of people feel the need to defend the show a bit, because the reactions to several episodes weren't as excited as some people had probably expected them to be. Who watches the Watchers and Deja Q being the first to some to mind.
Villains who aren't thoroughly evil? Are you kidding me? lol.
If you think the episode with Data's daughter is rough with till you get to one of the DS9 episodes. It was so devastating that by the end of it the actors were just filmed having a real life emotion breakdown.
