Cut down on the "unrealistic fairytale superhero autosuccess" stuff though, because coming up with super wild stuff is easy and it will get boring really fast. Phase 2: Ruleslawyering - People are trying to "play the game properly" and sticking to the rules by the letter. Players are a pain in the ass of the DM, when they are trying to argue with him using the letter of the "law" (rules). Players are prone to creating super powerful characters by abusing multi-class options to handpick certain skills that synergize into "super"powerful abilities. Phase 3: actual Roleplaying - Characters and stats become less important and you are more concerned with the personality and probably the looks of the character. At the same time the rules can be overruled more easily by the DM for the sake of a story (creating magical effects that are listed nowhere). In Phase 1 that might be happening too, BUT the players are usually equally stuffed with powers and thus the "level of awesome" isnt that great. This is the phase where player characters are least powerful and this is a good thing, because it increases the risk AND the reward from succeeding. This is also the phase, where "the world" feels most alive, because it is realistic instead of cartoony and characters and monsters have personalities compared to just having stats. Phase 4: Politician - This is actually a bad step in the development after roleplaying (but luckily also rare), because SOME players are trying to manipulate other players (the actual player) for their own benefit. Its not pleasant to play "against" such a player.
Muck006 I really do agree with you on this - for DMing a home game at least. What they're doing here and in the podcast is to provide entertainment for the audience. I think the way Chris is trying to do that is by letting the guys have some nonsense fun with the story because it's fun for the audience; it's cartoonish. (Now, spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen the entire series.) I especially agree with the "uneasy stomach feeling" though, and I wish it was used more in these games. I think it was done well when it appeared the party was going to suffer a TPK in the Temple of Orcus, and again when Aeofel died. There was a sense of gravity among the players, which also influenced the listeners. Now, though, it suffers. It's difficult to get that same feeling because Chris will always deliver a Deus Ex Machina to allow the entire party to continue. It's like watching a cartoon where you know the good guys will always win. What I think Chris needs to do is provide a situation where the party loses, but doesn't necessarily die. They need to lose something that's close to the party without the party suffering a crippling loss that would need to be remedied by DM intervention.

I don't think it was bad blood tho. Aggravating work sure, but not with any maliciousness.
I never said anything that indicated the other's being any less. I am stating this because of all of the people in this comment section that have a problem with him.
+Isaac Self He was brooding, bitchy and extremely desperate seeming for attention. I think being the only professional actor at the table made him feel like he HAD to be over-dramatic, and that also cut into his enjoyment of the game (and maybe even contributed to his decision to permanently quit the group). If only he realized he could be normal, chill out and enjoy the game (and stop screaming about the acid pits and reminding everyone you died, we get it -- you died) I think we'd maybe still be seeing him in these games. Alas, he's basically officially confirmed he's done with Acquisitions Incorporated and is "probably not" coming back.
WTHeskett He was getting terrible luck compared to everyone else. He's done shit like this when losing in his own series, TableTop as well -- throwing the dice out into the audience, or game piece off camera, etc. etc. I'll go find the specific TableTop game if I have to do so, just let me know. He was a good sport about the bad luck up until about 3/4 of the way through. Then he started being, well... brooding and bitchy. As far as desperate for attention, well, he's always insisted he be at the center of it.
Actually that's Uni the Unicorn, from the 1980's Dungeons and Dragons cartoon show, where a group of kids are teleported to the world of D&D unintentionally by a magic roller coaster. Uni is sort of their mascot character. Chris himself is dressed as Dungeon Master from the same show.
Well, you have to realize that Wil is sort of the Odd Man Out here. Mike, Jerry, and Scott are all webcomic makers, used to sitting down and writing something out. Wil has a theater background, he's skilled in working an audience and making things lively and immediate, so it's sort of his job to stir the pot and keep things popping. That means that he grabs the spotlight several times, but some of the crazy things he does make for really good moments. I hope the new guy is up to the task.
It's hard to believe Tom Hank's first hit was Mazes and Monsters, where D&D drives kids insane. D&D helps introverted people like me become social, hopefully parents get to hear this angle. Also, people usually do good things in a game.. unless you're playing a villian game of course. But that's a story for another day.
calm down people! The audio from the croud where suppose to **get louder** so you can hear what they say... I am so glad that the quality of all those podcast's are so damn nice. If you sadly don't have people who like to play pnp but you successfuly managed (like me) to be a dm in few games, you dont care about few ''misses'' of audio or quality from the movie. I am loughing so hard, remindes me on the old days ( not dnd but pnp doesnt matter at all what kind of genere) Chris is friggn awsome!
I sometimes increase the volume so you can hear things said in the audience (or make it possible for someone else to decode what was said, since I didn't always catch the meaning myself)
24:48 is "Watch out for Acid Pits", which prompts the middle finger from Wil. Three seconds before that I can't make it out.. I wasn't able to decode all of the audience shout-outs, but make some louder in case someone else could.
WotC is actually releasing a new Acquisitions Inc episode with the New Guy in audio podcast format, a prelude to this year's PAX Celebrity Game. Check it out!
Wil's jump is even more amazing when you realize that Qubec's premier electro-sythpop band is "Men Without Hats", so he did all that to the tune of "Safety Dance"
A prelude adventure to this years Celebrity Game is being uploaded piece by piece at the Wizards podcast site (see main video desc above for the link), it introduces the New Guy, and explains a few things that happened between then and now. Maybe.
Wait...I just noticed that only Jim and Binwin volunteered to go into the trap... Aeofel and Omin said nothing and Chris PUT them in the trap.... Considering how S3 ended, just having Binwin and Jim in the trap would have been poetic justice... Missed opportunity. Oh well.
Sometime after PAX Prime (which is the event at which these are held/filmed). So, at some time after August 30th and September 2nd (the dates at which PAX Prime is held this year). You can watch the D&D game live on the Penny Arcade live-stream of the event, you just need to wait for the schedule to be posted to find out when to watch.
Patrick Rothfuss wrote "The Name of the Wind" and "A Wise Man's Fear", where a scholar tracks down an infamous hero/rogue in hiding to try and get his story. I've spent three weeks listening to the audiobook of "A Wise Man's Fear" and it's downright amazing. Magic, fae, well explained magical technology that's somewhere between Renaissance Italy and Steampunk, TONS of characterization, mythical human societies built from the ground up.. I'm running out of characters. #ReadIt
@@robertlong1733 As am I! Although, considering that I’ve been researching/building “The Afton Family Horcruxes” for years now, I’m not really in a position to tell PR to hurry.
The gimmick this year is that Scott Kurtz and his friend he does the Blamations with make little cartoons to spice up the action. The WOTC RUclips version only shows the intro, they also had Crit Hit and Crit Miss minis for all four characters, as well as cuts scenes with the Drow, first seeing the Statue, and the Owlbear that shows up later.
Last Wheaton episdoe, right? Thanks for the moments, but glad he left. Not like there were no great Wheaton moments, but his need for attention got worse and worse. Next!
Jared Hendricks idk I really liked his presence there. Most of his "need for attention" was pandering to the audience to make it entertaining. He was really a great asset in terms of D&D knowledge as well. I would have been upset that he left except they replaced him with Patrick Rothfuss. I mean come on, it's Pat Rothfuss.
this is by far the most hillarious of the three live podcasts they've played till now.. :) listened to all of the audio podcasts and watched all the videos of the adventures and it's still an amazing show.. :) wish this would be a more regular show.. like once a month at least :P
I know it's entirely unrelated to why Wil stopped being on the show, but its entirely appropriate that after tge second time almost melting in acid Aofel was like, fuck you guys, I'm outta here!
Was there ever an actual official investigated explanation for why he stopped other than they wanted Patrick Rothfuss to join? I know fans thought that Scott and Will hated each other because of the other live shows where they snarked at each other but I always thought that was them being silly
@@ClericOfPholtus Back in the day Will Wheaton wrote on social media that he won't ever play with Scott again, they had a falling out. I'm not gonna search his entire social media for the post, but fans didn't just made this up, that's what i want to clarify. Truly regrettable, but that's how it went.
Thanks for the moral support :) I'm working on the Robot Chicken adventure now, darn thing is almost 4 hours long. Planning to add clips from the show in ironic places.
So I was watching some vids and people said "dnd" so I wondered what it was and searched it up on youtube and well... this is dnd...... ok.... umm interesting
Its great how at the end of every episode he is in, this loser who has done little but complain and showboat the whole time, Wheaton makes some pointless threat as he is about to leave.
I think this was Wil's last game. I've watched some of his TableTop stuff and he does not take losing at those sort of games well, some of the times. Especially if he is just getting the worst luck all game long, as was the case in this. He's just sort of sensitive I guess, and to add insult to injury after finally climbing out of the statue or whatever's ass, he lands in what? You guessed it, the pool of acid again. All this, with consistently horrible rolls (even, fortunately but humiliatingly enough, against himself later on). He's done similar things on his own show when being completely wrecked by the game in general, and in this case it was no different. Throwing his D20 just randomly off the stage in anger, not even really caring where it landed. I kinda think Wil and all of them sorta had a falling out of sorts after this, not that they are enemies or anything now, more just like "I don't wanna play D&D with you guys anymore" sort of animosity. And then he blames it on his famous Depressive/Anxiety issues. I honestly don't even think he wants to come back, even if they would even let him back at this point, since I think Viari is about to become a full-fledged member of the group (the new session is in like a week, I may have seen something sort of spoilery on the reveal website). Anwyays, I really doubt Wil Wheaton will play with AI regularly ever again. Cameo, maybe, but I really doubt it.
applesoranges Um, what was the point of your comment? If you were trying to look like a sarcastic, condescending little shit, then congratulations, you've succeeded. Sure, yeah man, you could easily counter what I said by saying "that's OK, I will just go back and enjoy what's already been out for a few years now again and again and again" -- I never said you couldn't do that. All I said was _I think this is Wil's last game_. Which means you're not going to be getting any new games with AI, "probably not" ever again according to Wil himself. "Wow, I must be a messiah" -- do you even know what a fucking messiah is? I think you were reaching more for a word like "psychic", even though neither one really makes a whole lot of sense in the context of a response to my comment. Now, whether you go watch the other videos from 2 years ago or do something else altogether, I really don't care. Fuck off.
applesoranges With sentences as horrible as that, you're not even beginning to do a halfway decent job of it. It's OK, sped, keep trying. And failing. It's hilarious.
Rifleman Moore Scott Kurtz has a pattern of mispronoucing everything, throwing in slurs directed at races and sexual orientation, cannot remember the rules on temporary hit points, charging or other aspects from season to season, and is bewildered by basic addition. He also bitches when the audience talks. If other players want to talk strategy, he makes loud snoring noises. If other players are rewarded for ingenuity, he complains. If he doesn't get his way, he whines (check out Season 8/Arc of the Mad Mage and the incident with his precious "beer robot"). Don't look for improvement. He's a 400 lb eight year old in an adult body. My 12 year old daughter has more focus than that moron, and she has ADD.
Mike Gould And he's not doing any of that for comedic effect, because that wouldn't allow you to make your fat joke about him. Congrats on raising the level of RUclips commentary. Oh, wait.
It's not a fat joke. He's easily 400 pounds and he acts like an eight year old. Does being heavy allow him to be an ass to everyone when he doesn't get his way? Not from my perspective. Everyone has problems. You don't get to hide behind them and make life difficult for everyone else.
No, actually--being heavy had absolutely nothing to do with the topic, but you're the one who brought it up. And, since everyone at the table, and the DM, all realize that his antics are an affectation for humorous effect (which you appear to have missed), the fact that you did bring that up says a lot more about you than it does about him. You do realize the guy is a professional humorist, right? You do realize that the DM and the other players actually enjoy this, and enjoy his presence at the table? And have stated as much elsewhere, on multiple other fora? You seem to be the only one disturbed by this. If the other members of the party and the DM are all in on the joke and having fun, what place do you feel you have telling them all that they are wrong and that they should not be?
There is a difference between being funny and trying to be funny. If you listen as I have to every podcast that includes Scott, you'll see a trend. Chris Straub does the same sort of job and he's funny without making a single racial comment. No one else seems permitted to do so...but Scott...it's "an affectation" (you claim). I've watched/listened all the AI videos countless times. The others at the table also pick up on this with subtle comments or looks. You'll also note that they redirect conversations, change topics, and the like. And if I'm the "only one disturbed" by this, why does the audience always seem to grow to dislike Binwin over the course of a performance? Note Scott's statement "They're already pre-against me, so I might as well go with it?" Someone needs to pay more attention. And also note that it makes little sense to be a childish, whiny bitch as an "affectation" as a "professional humorist", which he does within the confines of a audio performance only or on stage. Your argument holds no water, there Fluids. Pun intended.
He's aware ... it was just prophetic given that the guy in the audience didn't actually know it was going to happen again, and his joke happened to luckily hit the nail right on the head.
I don't think he is coming back,. even after the reveal wheaton made a tumblr post saying that him and kurtz will never preform together again. if you type both their names into Google a reddit post will link to the post
I just found out about this. Seen 2015 pax D&D. And i loved it. Now I wanted to see more to know a little history about them. But Will is making it really hard to watch all of them. He just have to say something every time when anything is happening. And I don't think he is funny.
Actually giving respect to the original work was the main reason I made this video. Remember all the Chris Straub animations that played when certain events happened during the episode? The live audience got to see them.. but when Wizards put their own version online, ALL of these were CUT. Not only that, but the original opening animation was redone, with clown noises replacing all the swearing to the point where you literally could not understand what anyone was saying. I made a point of putting ALL the animations back in, in their original gloriously profane form. In fact, I even sat down and spliced both the Twitch stream version and Wizard's RUclips version together chunk by chunk to eliminate all the black-screen pauses that happened on the original showing when the crew was switching the camera to show the animations. That's why I call this version "The Ultimate Version", it takes the very best of both showings of this event. I even added someone's cell phone camera of the Giant Idol getting lowered, so the RUclips viewer would understand why the crew was going NUTS at that point, something both versions missed. And a picture of the AD&D manual cover so new people would get the reference. Ok, so I added the Stan Lee cameos. I already apologized to Wil Wheaton about that in another comment. I was going mildly insane doing all this though, I felt compelled to do something creatively irresponsible.
BlackfootFerret, you have the best version of this on the internet. Everyone that bitches about it really sucks. You're the best. Those annotations killed me.
She never betrayed them.. but she -did- fail to mention the Giant Acid Pit they were all bound to stumble into to get their stuff. -And- never told her spider to use its bungee-web strands to get people out of the acid. And she conveniently left Acq Inc all the monsters to fight, while racing to try and steal the eyes before they were finished mopping up. If all her enemies died trying to kill each other?... well.. it happens sometimes. If you're GOOD ;)
Will Wheaton is insufferable. He's smug and un-funny and everything he did went on for a few seconds too long. He annoyed me every moment of the 2:09:53.
Yeah, it's really irritating how he plays everything up and even the acid jokes are getting fucking stale now. I mean it's been YEARS. I love how Kris took a jab at him in the opening animation. God how I wish Kris were the fourth member of the party.
It's pretty verbatum what the original audio was.. I did boost the audio too much when Mike says "Cookie Crisp", but other than making it easy to hear what the audience says now and then, I didn't alter it.
I just want to say for the record that I like Wil Wheaton. I didn't splice in the Stan Lee footage to be mean, I'd just seen the Stan F-word Rant episode just beforehand and it dropped my jaw.
+voteZDLR He wasn't bitchy he was funny. He got a shit hand and despite losing still made everyone laugh.
Good day y’all. Haven’t been here since ‘17. I wish I could play dnd some time soon. Just no one around me to play it with
Local game stores might have hookups.
@@BlackfootFerret Glooks. Idk if my town has any tho. It’s a small townie town
Alright, but I'm gonna call him Sparklemane.
Wil's reaction to "Watch out for acid pits!" was totally priceless.
It's even funnier in 2010.
Is the episode when he died on RUclips?
I like how they did the animations, they should continue doing that.
Thanks :) I'll try and keep abreast of future episodes and celebrity games when they come out.
Pat Rothfuss has proven himself to be more than capable, the group hit its peak with Jerry, Jim, Scott & Pat. Viari is frikking awesome & hilarious.
Not sure I'd call it theatre training, just more being obnoxious and desperate to be the center of attention.
2 hours of pure bliss, thanks for the upload
Rolls a one
The game hasn't even started yet
OMG the DM's intro Dialog is directly from the D&D cartoon.
How did i miss that the first time :)
32:39 "You take another points of acid damage."
"GOD DAMNIT" - Wil Wheaton 2012
Awesome, this is my favourite part of pax every year.
Thanks so much for the video.
I love Chris' reference, especially with Uni.
Also: @BlackfootFerret, I am so grateful for you uploading all three of the games, and the link to the podcasts. You are wicked awesome.
You guys are amazing! I would love to watch a live game with all of you playing.
Wil "It's a pleasure to open for you sir"
Chris "That's what she said"
Hey guys!! Great Show!! I just recently started watching this PAX gaming show and addicted to it...hope to see many more of these DnD epic adventures!
I sometimes increase the volume so you can hear things said in the audience (or make it possible for someone else to decode what was said, since I didn't always catch the meaning myself)
Given Binwin's history with Dex saves, he's actually one of the more nimble dwarf fighters I've seen in action.
Mike is so unfairly hilarious. XD
Wil's jump is even more amazing when you realize that Qubec's premier electro-sythpop band is "Men Without Hats", so he did all that to the tune of "Safety Dance"
I miss the old crew...
Awesome archiving work!
Thanks 😻
thank you for the upload, but could you use next time subtitles instead of raising the crowds voices?
+Floyd Barber thats a really really good idea
The session where Aeofel fell into the acid pit was not taped. However, you can find the audio-podcast on the Wizards website.
1:31:25 "so I dual wield wands" "Wait what are you holding onto the rope with?" ROFL
A prelude adventure to this years Celebrity Game is being uploaded piece by piece at the Wizards podcast site (see main video desc above for the link), it introduces the New Guy, and explains a few things that happened between then and now. Maybe.
I loooooove acquisitions incorporated 😆
awesome mash up of the 2 different versions man! love it!
Just a comment NOT bashing Wil Wheaton passing through
Wait...I just noticed that only Jim and Binwin volunteered to go into the trap... Aeofel and Omin said nothing and Chris PUT them in the trap.... Considering how S3 ended, just having Binwin and Jim in the trap would have been poetic justice...
Missed opportunity. Oh well.
That firefly reference had me in tears xD
#ReadIt
Still waiting for “Doors of Stone” the supposed third book.....
@@robertlong1733 As am I!
Although, considering that I’ve been researching/building “The Afton Family Horcruxes” for years now, I’m not really in a position to tell PR to hurry.
Best and funniest session I've seen online, I need to see more of these guys!
What happened to Jim's Books of Awesome or whatever from the last episode?
Do you really think this is a "serious" and "balanced" campaign? Just watch the "Pacific Rim in Waterdeep" episode.
+Muck006 and I quote "I'm not even going to make you roll, you just succeed."
They just happened to be in the part of the mansion that got lost into oblivion, like his bedroom.
I've been looking forward to this moment for a full year now
This was very entertaining.
Jerry is such a good sport at the beginning of all this.
Was Lizards and Wizards cancelled?
A humbling reminder that I have begun to optimize my characters and need to seriously stop.
Always just a game, while incredibly wonderful its about the art of Play. Always Play.
Binwin breaks Chris at 1:23:00
The gimmick this year is that Scott Kurtz and his friend he does the Blamations with make little cartoons to spice up the action.
Matthew Brown And seriously, Viari kicks much ass.
Jared Hendricks Why did Wheaton leave?
Kojin MacJorn Wil was dealing with scheduling conflicts and personal issues unrelated to Pax or the guys. He had to bow out to get things sorted out.
Mike Gould Well, now I fell like a jerk. Hope he got it sorted. Anyway, I like him a lot on Table Top. His personality is perfect for that setting.
this is by far the most hillarious of the three live podcasts they've played till now.. :) listened to all of the audio podcasts and watched all the videos of the adventures and it's still an amazing show.. :) wish this would be a more regular show.. like once a month at least :P
It's much better without Will Wheaton. Him saying "NOPE" to the spider.....he's like a walking talking meme machine.
I miss Wil to be honest. Morgan's sense of humor is stilted, and Scott just seems to bitch and whine a lot. Patrick is a good addition to the crew.
Mike Gould he just tries too hard to be the center of attention. gets annoying
hameed That I can agree with. There is a lot of that. Still, he can be very entertaining. I find Scott's constant complaining more of an annoyance.
hameed Ya I noticed that as well, gets old pretty fast.
I like wheaton. I dont know if thats the contrarian in me but Wil keeps the game running
Specifically this is Dnd Next. There is of course many versions. Next being the well, newer of the ones.
Get some friends and a decent DM, and it's fun. Laid back games like this can be fun and funny as hell
Aeoffel is now not only an adventurer but also an assplorer ...
Roll for Ass Spelunking
oh on second thought Wil Wheaton does makes things funnier...
No.
He doesn't.
This is probably my favorite "season" of this! The game and the humor were spot on the whole way through!
Its great how at the end of every episode he is in, this loser who has done little but complain and showboat the whole time, Wheaton makes some pointless threat as he is about to leave.
I rather like Wil Wheaton in this, actually. Aeofel's acid death and metal resurrection were some of the biggest plot points in the early games.
And like a whiny middle schooler he complains non stop about his death.
Get over it, everyone has lost a character.
Watching several years worth for the first time in one sitting = winning.
I love Aoefel!
I hope Chris one day collects them all and makes a DM commentary!
+voteZDLR Wow, you must be a messiah. It's not like I could just watch the other videos from 2 years ago
applesoranges Um, what was the point of your comment? Fuck off.
voteZDLR No, I simply was making you out to seem like dumb shit
applesoranges With sentences as horrible as that, you're not even beginning to do a halfway decent job of it. It's OK, sped, keep trying. And failing. It's hilarious.
voteZDLR I bet it is, I can see how enthused you are about it
If it was me who screamed "Watch out for acid pits!" and Wil flipped me off, after the acid pit was revealed I'd scream "I told you so!"
Seamus, it's pronounced 'shaymus', FFS.
Note Scott's statement "They're already pre-against me, so I might as well go with it?"
Someone needs to pay more attention.
And also note that it makes little sense to be a childish, whiny bitch as an "affectation" as a "professional humorist", which he does within the confines of a audio performance only or on stage.
Your argument holds no water, there Fluids. Pun intended.
He's aware ... it was just prophetic given that the guy in the audience didn't actually know it was going to happen again, and his joke happened to luckily hit the nail right on the head.
will wheaton needs to calm the F down with his name. im hoping they keep calling him Al when he comes back on sunday.
I don't think he is coming back,. even after the reveal wheaton made a tumblr post saying that him and kurtz will never preform together again. if you type both their names into Google a reddit post will link to the post
I'm hoping he wont return, he tries SO HARD for attention and it's just sad. I'm sure he is a nice guy when not on stage...
The only good things he added were the descriptions when it wasn't being filmed yet, and the gag about being a Jim Darkmagic fanboy.
Greg Griswold
Also nice to know people watch that far into the video!
God, I want to enjoy these, but Wills hamming it up every few minutes just kills it for me. The guy just keeps talking... and shouting.
Very nice work, thanks for putting this together.
Wil is such a drama queen. So glad they dropped him.
they didn't drop him. He and Scott had a falling out
I just found out about this. Seen 2015 pax D&D. And i loved it. Now I wanted to see more to know a little history about them. But Will is making it really hard to watch all of them. He just have to say something every time when anything is happening. And I don't think he is funny.
24:45
Not Chris fighting to keep a straight face, knowing very well what is underneath the floor of the map diorama
The Stan Lee stuff was real real dumb. Thanks for the upload, but really. Give some respect to the original work dude.
If you're GOOD ;)
wil wheaton is so cringe
Drow. And Drow, in the lore, are the single most hated subrace of elves ever. They're kill on sight.
God Damn, I HATE WILL WHEATON.
I actually like him quite a bit. I was sad to see him go. I just couldn't resist ribbing him a bit here.
I love Wil
6:38 - Don't worry! We are still flying half a house!
Will Wheaton is insufferable. He's smug and un-funny and everything he did went on for a few seconds too long. He annoyed me every moment of the 2:09:53.
........ Sheldon?
Yeah, it's really irritating how he plays everything up and even the acid jokes are getting fucking stale now. I mean it's been YEARS. I love how Kris took a jab at him in the opening animation.
God how I wish Kris were the fourth member of the party.
It's pretty verbatum what the original audio was.. I did boost the audio too much when Mike says "Cookie Crisp", but other than making it easy to hear what the audience says now and then, I didn't alter it.
