    Besides all the other reasons (prescription glasses, snug fit) already mentioned in the comments for keeping sunglasses under straps, it's required if you want a cap to cover your ears in cold weather (or to cut down on wind noise). There's no way around this: In order to sit on your ears, the glasses have to go under the cap's ear covers which themselves must necessarily be under the straps.

    But my glasses are prescription, and have no need to be advertised to anyone, so they're underneath, to help keep them nicely secured no matter how many bumps I hit! :)

    Here in Florida glasses under straps makes more sense. Boiling hot when you finish your ride and the helmet can come off while leaving the sunglasses in place.

  • @paulflory3532

    The glasses/straps thing is really simple. (A) If you are wearing not-too-expensive sunglasses which have no vision correction, might as well wear them OUTSIDE the straps so you can easily put them up on your helmet while riding if you want to. And look pro. (B) If you have prescription sunglasses, wear them INSIDE the straps so you don't risk destroying them when you remove your helmet! If your vision is as bad as mine, you need them to see where you are going, so you're cooked if you destroy them while taking a break during a ride. You won't be wanting to remove them while riding anyway! Furthermore, people like me need progressive lenses to see both distance and close up (Garmin or smartphone apps) while riding, and transitions lenses to avoid bringing a pair of clear glasses as well in case the light goes. Lenses like that cost hundreds of dollars to replace if they get damaged, and it takes at least a week to have them made. Sorry, but looking pro just isn't worth risking that much, to me anyway.

    Sunglasses over straps is no doubt the way to go with sunny g's but I need a corrective lens (specs) and put them under. For the simple reason I don't take said specs off and don't want to pull them off by accident when I take the helmet off.

    I'm with Sean Kelly in the 'cap backwards' camp. The peak protects the neck from sunburn. Don't have a helmet so that doesn't apply to me.

    Is it really better to wear sunglasses under the helmet straps? In my case sunglasses usually stay on the whole time. But the helmet is taken off while riding uphill or taking a break. My sunglasses nearly fall to the ground every time I take of my helmet because I do not think of it.

    The cap being more aero with the blade down id like to see the test results for that. The cap blade being up like Simon wears it makes more sense from an aerodynamic position As the wind hitting it will direct down and around the head or up and over. But Regardless no hat is far is better then both options.

      I used to wear my sunglasses over the bands, until one incident where I forgot to remove my sunglasses before taking off my helmet . Smack dab they went, face down onto the pavement. When I picked them up, they were all scratched up. I don't like to make the same mistake twice, so now I wear them under.

    The reason you're supposed to wear your sunglasses over the straps of your helmet is so that in case you take a nasty fall, they're more prone to come off your face, rather than them being under the straps, you falling face first, and having shards of plastic and glass pierced into your eyes. I'd much rather deal with cuts on my face rather than potentially going blind in one eye.

    I was wondering if any experienced cyclist could help me with something? I've recently bought a bike and starting cycling (for the first time since I was about 14, I am now 21). It's a hybrid 2015 Marin San Rafael DS1, and I am very pleased with it. I have taken it out a few times on a long cycle trail where I live. There is one part in the trail that goes on to a road with traffic, and it has a little bit of lose gravel on it. It also happens to be on a downhill corner.
    As an inexperience, I have no idea whether to go slow, or keep my speed continuous. My main fear is sliding sideways on the gravel whilst cornering and falling over on my bike into oncoming traffic. Any advice? Thanks.

    • @samwilton897
      @samwilton897 7 лет назад

      Rudi Leandro if your near traffic take no risks and go slow. otherwise, don't brake during the corner. brake before it and roll through as otherwise you could loose traction, lock up, or skid. :)

    • @SlowBoyAthlete
      @SlowBoyAthlete 9 лет назад +2

      +Quinlandis Wallace I very strongly suggest replacing your helmet after a hard fall. If it were a very light crash then perhaps keeping it, but a hard impact on the helmet, yeah, I would replace it. On the plus side, a cheap $30 helmet has the same safety rating as a $400 one, you are just paying more for better fit and lightness. As they say, how much is your head worth?

    The UNDER vs OVER strap suggestion does NOT make sense to me. .. Here's why... Under the straps is far more superior because the straps help hold the glasses down, and the other big reason is that they do not widen and stretch out the frame by going over.

    I have to wholeheartedly disagree with the glasses. As a wearer of glasses, I find putting the glasses over the straps causes many issues:
    1. Straps flap, even relatively taut ones. Unless you're chin strap is TIGHT you're running the risk of flapping straps which can move your glasses/sunglasses around. For us who wear prescription glasses/sunglasses, this is dangerous.
    2. Sweat. If you're a sweaty person having your straps under your glasses and likely tightly against your head (if your glasses fit well) your straps will act like a rain spout for your sweat and it will slide down your straps and all over your glasses. This salt can cause discoloration over time.
    3. Taking your helmet off / accidents. If you have to take your helmet off or are in a crash your glasses will move because the strap moves. Your helmet is likely to slide around on your head with an impact. Having the straps under the arms of your glasses will only increase the chances of dislodging the glasses.
    4. Does it really look cooler? - I've found, no. For the most part, wearing glasses under the straps is better. Glasses just look better against your head than against some vertical line.
    Please, for safety reasons, don't suggest wearing glasses over the straps.

    There you go, another tip on the "Top ten ways to avoid sore ass when cycling" by Matt... just have a pump!!!! Hilarious, but honestly guys, doing that on a ride whilst filming is such an EPIC moment because of the way it looked soo natural! I should even say, it deserves a suspension, clearly worst then riding speedos!!

    One thing that bugs me is, people who ride a climbing bike, but wear an aero road helmet. Just doesn't seem to go together at all. I have people in my cycling team that do that. Oh, well.

    Pulls up at cafe, takes sunglasses off then takes helmet off then puts sunglasses back on and drinks coffee. It really is that simple.
