I have the audio book and just listened to it again. The real "shit my dad says" was a lot more raw than this. He was a very harsh father but loving in his own way. Almost psychotically funny because often times the things he said were ridiculous. But a lot of the harshness and charm... both extremes of that character could not translate into a broadcast sitcom dad. Its really a question of pacing. Because sometime after leveling his son with a quip, he would realize it some minutes later, and then soften up. But you don't have time for several minutes of silence in a sitcom. So the show had difficulty relating the upside of this character. Shatner comes off a little more like an asshole than the real father was. I really did like the show because in many weird ways, Shatner reminded me of my father who passed away a few years before this show came on the air. I think the show is much funnier if you've read the audio book and have a clearer picture of the real character Shatner is playing.
