People hated him because early on the Euro-season he talked shit about Conchita, then she (and in case someone doesn't know, the character is a drag queen) defended him before he said anything, she said she had to talk with him, later there was the Amsterdam pre-party and everyone booed him through the whole performance, then the hosts said "the audience is booing because of what you said in Armenian media about Conchita Wurst", he said "for those who don't know me, I'm a comedian too, it was a joke" *booing intensifies* "Today I talked with Conchita, I'm not an homophobe (tranpshobe, etc; that's what he meant)" *crowd weirdly becomes crazy but in the good way, no booing* "Someone translated really bad my joke and that's it. I'm not an homophobe, really" *more cheering,* then the hosts said "today is his birthday", everyone sang it to him, then everything was good between the eurofans and him and he came 4th. What a story. Deserved top ten but not over other top 10 songs. Anyway, at least he had to be so happy to see that big 4th place! And I'm happy for him. I don't like the joke he made (something about she not knowing if he's a man or what, that kind of thing), but he's not a bad man.
Not choosing sides on this, but it’s kinda funny how people were booing him and he basically sais “I’m sorry”, everyone is “ok” and happy and everything. I don’t know what he said, gonna look it right know. But people tend to forget everything super easily.
You’re right about the comedian part, Aram began his career as a comic in Armenia. He actually has played a lot of female roles, wore wigs and make up etc, so I doubt he had a real problem with any of it. He made a joke which went out of control.
This is one of my all times favorite Eurovision performances. Too bad you made up your mind beforehand because of the misunderstanding that was buried and cleared between Conchita and Aram long time ago. That said, he is one of the rawest talents I have seen on Eurovision stage. Love the structure of the song and how it builds up to explode at the end. His voice is so unique that its always recognizable. He wrote the song and is multitalented comedy show host and tv-personality in his homeland. You should see some of his music videos like " help". Was amazed by the artistic quality of many of his music videos.
This and Iveta Mukuchyan's Love Wave are hands down the best two Armenian entries so far. They did an extremely catchy and funky song named Dashterov together, you might want to check out the kinda weird video. About his comments: The guy is a comedian, so there's no need to be butthurt and take him too serious on that. He later on made some very supporting statements about the LGBTQ community, so think of it what you will.
My favorite Eurovision song of all time :) I just did my top 50 of all time and it was my number one without any questions. Though I agree that he struggles a bit in the first part. I don't know why cause he's really good singer. I mean REALLY good :)
Armenia nevee disappoints me.....this entry was brilliant, and contemporary.......this could have won........and perhaps should have on originality......wasn't aware of any of his dodgy socio/political beliefs.....(wish he had kept them to himself).....however, this track is faboulous with a great vocal!!👍
This was the bookies favorite to win going into the contest. I...don't really get the hype. Dubstep doesn't typically do well in Eurovision, so I'm really happy to see that this song succeeded. The comments he may have made don't really offend me. Admittedly, I didn't dig too deep into the matter. Even if it was a joke, he should've been sensitive to the subject - the community gets a lot of their news from internet sources, and a lot of context is lost through text and translation. On top of that the internet freaks out at every little thing, so comments like that need to be carefully considered. tl;dr - I think the issue was sensationalized and poorly covered by the media.
While I’m not a fan of the song, it was a fan favorite. That’s all I can say. Ah it’s the end of the 2014 series! Looking back, 2014 was a really good year. Lack of counties can also mean quality entries. You should react to EDF’s performance to “Only Teardrops/Rainmaker” and the 12 point song!
I didn’t know he made some comments referring to lgbt+ & Conchita. I like him and his song. A good message that talks, in a way, to the lgbtq+ community. And he looks like a good person, charismatic... I’ll find more about those comments. Ps: did you know that apparently he’s (or at least used to be) a comedian or something similar in Armenia?
I love the instrumental of this song, I'm not sure about the lyrics or his voice but overall I quite enjoy the entry, deserved place imo. That wraps up my favourite year, your reactions were great and I'm looking forward to whatever you're going to do next. If you're doing more instant reactions then please react to "25 Febbraio" by Francesca Michielin.
Interesting to see that his controversial comment (just one) is brought up by some again because this matter was solved way ahead of the contest back in 2014.
Right? In the first third his voice doesn't convinve me either. I think that just the first part of the song is too long, it feels like it doesn't take off when it should. I think the final part is amazing though.
Hey, Jake! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos for us ♥ If you can, please, PLEASE react to Alekseev performing these two songs live; (ruclips.net/video/8jfG4HF1Y-g/видео.html& and ruclips.net/video/pK9lQTH4j-k/видео.html) these two are very different in style, the first one is a new song of his, Sberegu, which is upbeat, and he performs it flawlessly, even after his mike cuts off for a second, it doesn't stop him? The second one is older, slower and just gets to you. You can clearly hear the emotion in his voice, and this is the real him (singing in russian, not stressed out). There seems to be this misconception that he can't sing live based on that one esc song he had, or that his voice isn't good enough, and that needs to go? I just really want you to see them, it'd make my day if you did, please? More people need to acknowledge the talent that guy actually has ♥ Thank you in advance, if you do.
Hi, Jake! I love your videos - really entertaining and uplifting. Just wanted to suggest, if you want to listen to something completely different to the rest, to check out Poland 1995. Greetings from Barcelona.
I love the second part of this song, hits you hard and I love the tough raspy singing. From what I know about the Conchita situation it is my understanding that it was an edgy, silly joke ( he is a comedian by profession) . I believe he also apologized pretty quickly when he found out how it upset people but did put it down to bad translation which I guess could be a factor idk. Most people seemed to accept it and moved on so it didn't cause too big of a drama. If you want some real homophobic Eurovision drama look at the comments made by Croatia's 2017 entrant Jaques Houdek where he called homosexual unions sick and that gay and lesbian people shouldn't be equal to their heterosexual counterparts.
Interesting review Jake... I knew nothing of the controversy and, as a gay man, that would, and should, touch me... However, this song has a great build... the official audio version is much, much better, he flaked a little with the live performance. Putting music first, it was one of my favourites that year, it's still on my regular playlist
I have a Eurovision due that you might be interested in. It's not on a Eurovision stage though but at the Sydney symphonic orchestra. With Conchita Wurst and Guy Sebastian (Eurovision 2015 Australia tonight again). And they're just phenomenal! Greetings from Greece! 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
Jake, please, react to Bosnia 2006! I've seen a lot of similar requests and I have a feeling that you've reacted to Bosnia2005 instead) This a magnificent song and one of the best eurovision entries ever
Hi, Jake. I know he was one of the favorite, but not mine. Good, but still not for that position. P. D. Remember, you must to react to the interval act, and the postcards of this year... You promise that ;)
Still my favourite song of 2014 and should have won. Eurovisions public voters and juries are filled with SJW snowflakes so he didn't stand a chance poor lad.
Half of the song is so dragging that I can’t stand it. Too long. Other half is so much better. Kinda overrated in my opinion. Agree Hungary was better.
i remember him being very cocky back then...but i am not surprised about his comments, unfortunately Armenia is not famous for LGBTI+ inclusivity...and his position...i think there were better entries for top 5, but sadly we could not vote that year at all :(
Ermmm... people talking about 2 songs in one when it comes to Icebreaker (2016) Seriously? Nope! This was not for me... I can't put my finger on what it really is other than the weird shifts.... between the different parts. Nope. It would not have gotten votes from me. Sorry ppl of Armenia.
Next will be 2013 so you will be verry verry suprise about România. Please Take time to react to other Romanian entries like 2005 And 2010. Thank you Jake. I never miss a video
I liked the song, but not as good as Hungary or Switzerland for me. Would love to see you react to Greece 2009 & Greece 2012, both good in their own ways. Also would love to see Azerbaijan 2009, Malta 2005 & 2012, Belgium 2013 and Denmark 2000 (the winner that year)
Not a fan of this one at all. First a very long snooze fest and then raspy incomprehensible screaming. I think it was really hard to hear the lyrics, I thought he sang "You now belong" when it was "You're not alone", "If it was only one kiss" when it was "What if it's all in one kiss" and the rest sounded like made up English and not real words.
The dogs barking in the background as you listened to the start of this song had a better voice. Very weak. Sorry! I normally love the Armenian entry, but this year was such an anticlimax due to the poor vocal.
My absolute favourite that year! That crescendo and the way it explodes...such a masterpiece!
the build-up was just too long

Great song! It sounds like a soundtrack to the good film. Armenia is my winner 2014.
Which film?
Definitely it is!👍

The guy was joking about Conchita, he’s a comedian as a profession. Just like this year Vanja joked about kids with cancer.

Artsvik 2017 was the best armenian performance...
nothing better than Jan Jan :-)
Mosa Aghbaria I didn't like Qele Qele that much, but I love Pre Gomesh!!!
The best song of all of Eurovisions!!!
Generally I don't like dubstep inputs in songs (or dubstep period), but this is an exception because it works so well within its musical context.
