you've seen hundreds of thousands of green and blue screens you didn't know were green or bluescreens. The bad looking ones are usually because the cinematographer didn't light it very well. Because they didn't plan, didn't have an idea of what was going back there, or the Director changed his mind on what to have in the background. I remember one shot that started out as daytime, then was supposed to be sunset. Then the Director wanted it at night. Then they did a reshoot lit for night time. Then the DIrector decided he wanted it to go from day time to night time comically fast even though there was no light changing on the character. Yes! The combos always seem to work the best. Instead of relying heavily or entirely on just 1 method. I always appreciate & like when they use makeup/mask combos (practical effects) combined with cgi to make bizarre characters come to life.

@@kingrobert7246 The new technology is showing to prove more effective than green/blue screening. The actors have more stuff to work with other than just imagining it. They can see the cityscape on the building. They can see the road passing by in the vehicle rigs. What's also important is that the vfx artists don't have as much to work on compared to other cgi-heavy projects. As far as I can tell, the main things they have to do is create the environment in the engine, and live update it for filming. However, it's now easier because they don't have to do a lot of keying and compositing like with green screen. They don't need to worry about the reflections of the green screen because they already have the proper lighting reference in the raw footage. Now, they just have to focus on cleaning up, such as getting rid of wires and other rigs and stuff. It's genuinely really exciting. Sorry for the long ramble btw, this is just really cool to me.

I’m excited to see where this goes, like the technology they used. I honestly thought they filmed in a city the whole time. I imagine you can make all types of virtual sets that’ll stay in studio while looking like the real thing.
I feel like a way forward for DC is to just concentrate on these elseworld films and make them with a good story and make it a great film instead of trying to build up a incomprehensible cinematic universe. I hope we get more of these "DC Black" films like Joker (2019) and The Batman (2022) in the future.
I had no idea that those were screens. So immersive.. The cinematography was really fantastic. Kudos to everyone who put in so much effort to create this masterpiece
Absolutely outstanding. I couldn't put my finger on why everything just seemed so real & gritty. The Batman really does show up how fake the MCU looks. Huge well done to all involved
This Batman Universe that Matt Reeves created is so similar BTAS, it's everything I wanted and more. I just hope Matt Reeves adds fantasy elements and embraces characters like Mr Freeze, Killer croc etc for what they are. And for those saying you dont see how this Batman would work in a JL setting, YOU'RE WRONG. Batman is always meant to be this grounded and human so we can feel the juxtaposition of what he is doing alongside AND against superhumans. Great Movie and i'm excited by the prospect of this Universe 👏👏
This movie is basically everything a Batman movie should be like from action, to detective work, to the portrayal. Not even the Nolan movies captured the vibes and characteristics of Batman. By focusing more on Bruce Wayne instead of the villain, this version of Bruce is much more “alive” and grounded than any of the other versions prior. And it’s about time because Bruce Wayne is a very interesting and deep character in the comics

Robert Pattinson was my fan cast for Batman in 2017, I never thought that years later he'd actually play my favorite version of Batman in live action (been a fan of Rob since 2010)
In my honest opinion I don’t think anything was wrong with the movie I thought the acting was amazing Patterson did amazing as Batman and portrayed him very well
So, you're telling me that the whole chase sequence was done in the volume without actually driving the cars. My gosh, this is unbelievable work. Greig Fraser deserves an Oscar for this work.
No, they shot outside as well, with cameras mounted on the cars. It was a combination of both new tech and practical stunts. There's another video that shows them filming outside. The car jumping through the fire is a practical shot, not VFX.
I love they acknowledged The Mandalorian without outright saying it. "having done this before on another show" and "volume work (previously) done was for desert scapes, not city scapes"
Obsessed with how amazing this movie looked. They way Matt/Greg framed the shots were so interesting. I really liked the mounted camera on the Batmobile when The Penguin's car goes flying through the air and crashes. The cinematography was just beautiful. The way the colors popped in contrast to the blacks suited this atmosphere of the film so well. The world of Gotham they created felt so immersive. I CANNOT WAIT for the sequel.
Didn't expect for the technology used by Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau for the TV show Mandalorian be used for a movie. I'm glad they are using other technology for media instead of relying too much on CGI to create an entire area of a scene which costs a lot of time to edit on a green screen not to mention actors can "feel" they are on the scene as well since they can physically see the scene instead of just imagining it when they act.
for Stagecraft, thsy still have to create an entire area of a scene in CG though. It's just shot live in camera rather than added later.... and then it usually needs lots of artefacts fixing, and often contrast added... which still needs lots of roto to accomplish well. Then Directors decide they didn't like the background and can we change it please? And then the reflections and lighting really don't work (yes this happens).
You are wrong by miles ,The Dark Knight had better writing ,better villain, better side characters, and a much better and powerful message. The batman is a good film ,but had average writing and had anticlimactic ending, Just showing batman giving a hand to rescue a few people in flood and helping that girl in the narration scene doesn’t make batman a symbol of hope, people are saying “WoW,hE beCaMe a SyMBol oF HoPE in the end” but they forget that it it doesn’t have a structure that shows how exactly batman became a symbol of hope, that’s what makes the execution of story poor unlike TDK,in which the execution of the story was way better from start till the end, the quotes in the movie held up with the actions of characters like “You either die a hero…” and Harvey and Batman proved it in the ending when Batman took the guilt upon him, tell me one great thing about to the batman’s story which stayed consistent, what I think batman did better was the cinematography, otherwise cat woman,Alfred was ok ,gordon and penguin were wasted, riddler was good,Patinson was great. The Dark knight had great batman, the best Gordon and Alfred, great TwoFace and simple words can’t describe Heath, Rachel Dawes was although bad but still overall better than the batman. I watched batman twice in theatres and realised a major flaw, the extra long scenes that could have been shown in less than a half the actual duration there was one scene in which Gordon was just walking in a dark room. Talking about the ending , the dark knight ending never fails to give chills and it shows it’s superiority. However the batman is a good film but didn’t beat TDK at all
This was basically the technique first used for the VFX on The Mandalorian. Glad that Hollywood is trying new technologies that was brought first from the small screen :D

@@leikeylosh Wow look. A hateful comment with no real substance....again. This was a REAL Batman. Who's performances were terrible? 😂 Oh please tell me. You let me know how that script was awful too.
So much better than filming everything on a green screen and throwing it all to the VFX companies to put together. It just adds a quality to it that makes it look real and tangible even if it's on a screen in the shot itself
The thing I love most about the Volume is that, much like what motion capture is to rotoscoping, this is the same sort of thing to classic rear projection.
What I love about this is that it has all the advantages of green screen minus the "green aura" and it gives actors reference for where they have to look.

The crew are the real stars of this movie, the entire environment felt organic and real like it was living breathing dark violent city. Most studios create good environments but it doesn't really make you feel like you're actually there.
Honestly, going into this movie I was very content with it being a joker style one off, despite it being my most anticipated movie of the year, but after seeing the movie several times I really am stoked to see a few more outings in this amazing world of Gotham they created. The music and the city feels like characters in their own right. Man this movie was an amazing experience through and through.
One of if not the best movie of this year and DC films, straight masterpiece 💯
Batfleck is smarter, stronger, faster, bigger, taller, better looking, scarier, more skilled, more experienced, more confident and brave, more charismatic, more angry, more brutal, more memorable, more entertaining to watch. FACT. You can respond because you know it's true. MAKE THE SOLO MOVIE
@@kingrobert7246 No one cares about Batfleck anymore. It’s long gone, get over it
@@kingrobert7246 You mean Fatman?
@@kingrobert7246 No one talked about bafleck what is wrong with people nowadays comparing everything they see.
@@kingrobert7246 lol, he was bloated and sluggish. Also the real Batman doesn't kill recklessly and with no remorse. There was nothing smart about him. He let himself be fooled right and left, he wasn't smart at all.lmao charismatic??? It's more interesting to watch Pattinson just stand there for five minutes than see Affleck act like a thug for two hours. You have low standards and wouldn't know a good film if you fell over it.
Snyder is not coming back, it's over, move on.
It is mind-boggling what they achieved here!! I mean damm dude, I had no idea that this was shot on a set, the lighting, and the camera made it look so photo-realistic!! Testament to what technology has achieved and I am loving this
I think one of the most important factors is that they used the volume technology to support the practical amazing sets, the technology is a game changer but knowing how and when to use it is important and it's something they nailed
Not only is it impressive how the movie was made, but that it turned out this good with this relatively new tech.
the movie was horrible lol.
@@kellymulderino7156 how was it horrible?
@@errwhattheflip Kelly has been posting comments like that for weeks. Their a Nolan fanboy in denial at this movie’s success. Lmao
Could never have guessed they were using backdrops. Wow. Perfect example of what CGI and practical effects working together can accomplish.
Yes! The combos always seem to work the best. Instead of relying heavily or entirely on just 1 method.
I always appreciate & like when they use makeup/mask combos (practical effects) combined with cgi to make bizarre characters come to life.
Incredible movie. Can't wait for the sequel
and Ben Affleck solo movie
@@kingrobert7246 too bad it’ll never happen. Cause no one who isn’t a Snyder stan would rather have that than this. Even Ben Affleck doesn’t want anything to do with it. So enjoy his cameo in the Flash movie. That’s the last you’ll see of him.
@@kingrobert7246 no. Just no.
@@exquisitecorpse__ why not? He was the most intimidating, most conflicted and interesting portrayal of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Batman is not some skinny emo who can’t get himself in public
@@kingrobert7246 I wasn't intimidated. He looked bloated and unable to run after a criminal. LOL, Pattinson is 10x the actor Affleck is and Reeves is 100x the director Snyder is. The fact is, if Snyder's films had made the kind of money WB wanted, he'd still be making DC movies. But they didn't, and Affleck has quit, so move on.
1:09 when he mentions doing it for another show, he is referring to the mandelorian since they did the same type of visual effects for the movie.
so incredibly cool, I could watch these bts for hours along with the movie over and over again haha amazing job crew, thank you for creating a gotham that completely pulled us in
That very first statement by Matt Reeves really exemplifies why this movie blows MCU out the water
Because the MCU is not trying to be realist ?
DUDE THE CAR CHASE STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS
Amazing technology thats changing the industry
Why cant we do things the old fashioned way
@@kingrobert7246 I don’t think it matters if things are old or new. What’s more important is if they are the solution for our specified problems.
@@kingrobert7246 because the newer ways are better lol
This behind the scenes video is just amazing, beautiful and cool just like the movie The Batman (2022)🦇 itself. Hats off to the entire team of The Batman (2022)🦇. Thanks a lot for giving DC Fans one of the best comic book movie. 👏🏼

Storyline, Visual everything was perfect. Best movie of this year
Story is crap. Terrible script. What movie do you Warner Bros shills watched??
terrible?? it's way better than most of comic book movies lol
I’m excited to see where this goes, like the technology they used. I honestly thought they filmed in a city the whole time. I imagine you can make all types of virtual sets that’ll stay in studio while looking like the real thing.
This was super interesting to watch. Crazy amount of talent and technology involved in the making of this masterpiece.
that batmobile chase scene will never get old. Such a amazing cinematic scene
Hard work obviously paid off. All these behind the scenes make us realise that all of them did their utmost to give us a great movie.
3:14 -3:25 magic being build for the epic French connection inspired batmobile chase sequence.
Best cinematography, best visuals, colors, background score, acting. Its a masterpiece
That's insane. No idea they did this on movies.
Looks amazing
It shows up how fake the DCEU is too. DC hasn’t had a film look this good since Man of Steel
Lol what?
😂😂
But it's sad to see MCU making all the money
2:31 his face looks pretty similar to Jim Gordon in The Dark Knight trilogy
This Batman Universe that Matt Reeves created is so similar BTAS, it's everything I wanted and more. I just hope Matt Reeves adds fantasy elements and embraces characters like Mr Freeze, Killer croc etc for what they are.
And for those saying you dont see how this Batman would work in a JL setting, YOU'RE WRONG. Batman is always meant to be this grounded and human so we can feel the juxtaposition of what he is doing alongside AND against superhumans.
Great Movie and i'm excited by the prospect of this Universe 👏👏
Batfleck needed to be in this grounded universe, all the dceu content ruined the character
🙏🏿
whole crew are genius hatsoff for your hardwork
Beautiful. Can't wait for the next chapter
1:05 how Batman actually really looks cool in his batcycle.
1:55 perfected shot of Rob looking great as a natural Batman.
Yeah, amazing detective work. Like having to rely on Penguin for basic spanish grammar to solve a riddle. Give me a break. This movie is a joke.
@@leikeylosh Seriously, it was so obviously a URL address instead 😂

Year 2 Batman movie i always wanted.
Thank you Matt Reeves for making this masterpiece.
I'm gonna say it again for those who didn't like the movie.
This is Year 2.
I understand, but why does he already have a batsignal of he’s just starting, to many lame things in this story for me. Cinematography is masterful, but the whole detective part is weak story telling.
@@diethr what did you understand? The comment said it’s year two and you still say he’s “just starting”. What was SO lame about it? Looks to me like you’re just nitpicking to hate on a popular movie. The detective part was not perfect but FAR from weak lmao
So I'm guessing Batman learned basic spanish grammar on Year 3? And learned what a carpet tucker is on Year 4?
The LED tech is like a perfect blend of CGI and old school theatre, it must be great for the actors to not be staring at a blue backdrop all day
Damn I thought the batmobile scene is real
Great tech showcase
I think it's a mix of both, ive seen another bts footage where they actually shot it on the streets.
It mostly is. They really jumped the Batmobile through the fire. There's another video that has Reeves talking about that.
Fun fact, director of photography also shot the Mandalorian and Dune (also using the same tech)
It's awesome to see this technology becoming more and more popular. It's like they've brought back old Hollywood’s painted backdrop technique and modernized it. Hopefully virtual sets can eliminate blue/green screen entirely.
Working like that must be so good for the actors, instead of the barren green screens

No. That's not what they're telling you. It's was most like a combination of both.
No, they shot outside as well, with cameras mounted on the cars. It was a combination of both new tech and practical stunts. There's another video that shows them filming outside. The car jumping through the fire is a practical shot, not VFX.
This is absolutely amazing. Congrats to everyone involved
I love they acknowledged The Mandalorian without outright saying it.
"having done this before on another show" and "volume work (previously) done was for desert scapes, not city scapes"
I love this movie because it really captures the gotham vibes that i was used to in cartoons and games!
The volume really sells those shots that I thought were impossible to capture. This is clearly the way moving forward.
This movie and I am afraid to say this, its miles better than the Dark Knight Trilogy
I would say it's on par or slightly better or worse (depending on ur taste) than the dark knight. Alot better than BB and TDKR tho
@@user-vc8wi7ff1j For you
You are wrong by miles ,The Dark Knight had better writing ,better villain, better side characters, and a much better and powerful message. However the batman is a good film but didn’t beat TDK at all
Better than TDK and TDKR? yes. But better than Batman Begins and Bvs ultimate edition. NO
Lol no
Working on this was so much fun and a huge honour
This was basically the technique first used for the VFX on The Mandalorian. Glad that Hollywood is trying new technologies that was brought first from the small screen :D

That's how you know that haters have NO real complaint and are reaching for something to convince themselves a great movie was bad. *The more praise something gets, the more haters wanna tear it down!*
Being too long is not the only problem. Script is terrible. Batman is a joke is his own movie. Terrible performances. Only blind fanboys refuse to see the flaws.

The thing I love most about the Volume is that, much like what motion capture is to rotoscoping, this is the same sort of thing to classic rear projection.
Definitely one of the best batman movies ever made that doesn't deviate from reality much! ..
What I love about this is that it has all the advantages of green screen minus the "green aura" and it gives actors reference for where they have to look.
