I really like the full price trap reselling, the visual indicators on their cooldown, and their dynamic placement. Having only played Orcs Must Die Unchained, I've been missing the 3D trap placement wave defense genre for a long time. And your point in the intro, while most people seem to really dislike metaprogression in wave defense games, I love it, and it can open so many ways to replay the content.
Thanks as always for a fun time, Splat. Super interesting take on tower defense. I never really thought about how many games are a twist on that. Tower defense, perimeter defense, point defense... ALL good, and add this to the stack.
Excited for this release. I got the game after the first review and it was super fun 9 months ago. Thanks for the all the content and going back to early games.
Some slick/ice tiles, slowing traps, and teleporters would make great environments and/or traps in this game. Maybe hanging cables/vines that force flying enemies to fly around or beneath them. I wonder if you can put traps on ceilings too?
Your scrap bin idea - makes me think of WWZ's XL Horde mode mechanic; every so many waves theres a BIIIIIIIG wave, and you can contribute your currency to power up defenses for that wave.
I always assumed we were robot Sentries, not space marines. The gameplay is right up my alley though, I loved the original Fortnite (Called Save the World I think now?) and this seems to scratch the same itch.
My problem with the game is the weapon accuracy. No rifle should spread like that at that distance, especially a hyper advanced future rifle. That kinda thing bugs the crap out of me.
Carbines are rifles that use pistol cartridges. Since it's in space they are likely plastic casings. So the pressures are going to be much lower. Also a long barrel isn't going to help you in such close quarters. Not to mention you don't want tons of little hull breaches from powerful bullets. Bugs the crap out of me when normies think they know things about ballistics.
@@Dookybootie”carbines are rifles that use pistol cartridges”. Not all of them. Carbines are simply shorter rifles and many are still chambered for rifle rounds. Possibly the most well-known example is the M4 carbine, which uses the same 5.56 mm cartridge as its full-length predecessor, the M16. An older example is the M1 carbine, which uses a type of 7.62 mm round (0.30 carbine to be precise). It is true that there are “pistol caliber carbines” (like the Ruger PC 9mm), but they do not define this category of firearm. It’s the shorter barrel length of the weapon, compared to a rifle, and not its ammunition that is the more important distinction. That being said, I agree that the rounds in this particular rifle would probably be lower powered, to avert overpenetration. And the ship’s bulkheads are probably reinforced.
@wyomingsioux "The typical carbine is the pistol-caliber carbine. These first appeared soon after metallic cartridges became common." Straight from Wikipedia. The rifle caliber Carbines are the exception not the rule. Once again normies claiming they know about firearms. Their base of knowledge being Call of Duty. Not actual field experience.
@@Dookybootie Likely using plastic casing, Why? It's a friggin fictional space ship with a bunch of windows you're supposed to destroy that have auto sealing bulkheads. You also deploy offensive traps all over the ship that are extremely dangerous. And all that said even if the pressure was lower and it was a 9-16 inch barrel it wouldn't make projectiles spread like that at 20 feet. If you couldn't handle the recoil it might but this is a space gun handled by a super soldier. We also don't know how heavy the weapon is, it might be heavy enough that it has like zero tangible recoil. What also bugs me is when people use mental gymnastics to over explain why a dev made a weapon function less effectively for gameplay balance reasons and arrogantly insults people over it 🙄
@KevanWalter Plastic casings, because it's space and resources are limited. Therefore are 3d printed. I don't know if you know this, but metal is heavy and hard to come by in space. Auto sealing bulkheads? OK, if that were true what does that help when you make a 22 to 30 caliber hole in a space where there isn't such a system. Even if that were true, it would make the station to heavy to be feasible. The amount of assumptions you're making is all I need to know. However you know everything, and are never wrong about anything. Mental gymnastics, you mean actual facts a figures. Physics isn't mental gymnastics by the way.
Wave defense with traps and weapons are always a good time. Reminds me of portions of Natural Selection (an old Half-Life/Counter-Strike mod) and also reminds me of a mode in Warframe as well as 7 Days to Die! Looks fun, added it to WL!
What did people think of Genesis Alpha One? It's one of my favorites and reminds me of this game, but I think Genesis Alpha One still has it beat by a mile.
Bought this after Splatt’s first video on it. Good game but I did thumb it down on steam. Needed more time in the oven as the devs released it as single player even though they clearly wanted coop. So some levels, like Core Processing, were kinda BS to play on your own. As despite what it may look like aka. Orcs Must Die but in space. It really aint. Cos that game you can complete levels with traps only. Not so in Sentry. You as the player must defend or else you’ll never ace a level let alone finish a run. And that’s fine as the devs want a more hard earned victory/you are the last hope for humanity kinda vibe but just a heads up if you are thinking of grabbing it. I enjoy both titles but I do wish the devs of this one would keep balance for SP and Coop in mind when making levels, progression etc. Finally I will say the guns positively slap. Good N chunky sounding and satisfying to use. That SMG is possibly one of the best SMGs put in a game and I absolutely advise upgrading it to have double ammo the moment you start a run and it’s part of initial equipment. You can take on any foe with that bad boy if you know the enemies foibles.
I bet it would be a lot easier to defend the ship if someone wasn't throwing away all your trap-making materials every time you stop paying attention for even a second =P
I really want this game to succeed but it still feels like its missing that something to make it a great game. The ammo mechanics, the lack of divergent upgrade paths, the rng on both drops and in what enemies you face on each encounter, it feels close yet not quite there. Up the ammo counts a bit more so it doesnt feel like such a chore, spice up the upgrades, and at least give us a display of what enemy types you'll face during the encounter these things would make for much more interesting and fun gameplay. Then the big hook could be the roguelike elements that you mentioned with permanent in between run upgrades to taylor the game to your favored playstyle, like adding a scope or overcharging a weapon or trap, something along those lines. Still the Orcs Must Die genre is far from oversaturated so this game remains very high up on my radar, but I need that one more shove before being sold on this title.
At least some semblance of a challenge is left. It's a shame there are more and more sniveling babies like you in the industry. No wonder all the "games" are interactive movies nowadays.
i hate that Splatt says "i want a unbalanced game that need metaprogression to be playable" because either it will be basically impossible before you got the type of meta progression he talk about or it will make the map be so easy that it's no challange what so ever.
You can always listen to the first one, wait for the 2nd one to appear. Close the video after 2nd one starts, open it again and you shouldn't get an ad. I usually relaunch the vid on the smartphone until I get a 5 second 1st ad.

Oh, I saw it. 🙃
typical splat character/company name lol
Takes away some of the mystery behind his name... /gag lol.
So this is basically "Orcs Must Die" in space.
That sounds like a solid sales pitch.

Sentry is an awesome game, one of my favorites. Highly recommended. Thanks for covering it!
Can't wait till it gets multiplayer

You should try the Sanctum games. When you build stuff before the wave starts and then you shoot your own weapons, it really reminds me of those games

This one has been on my watch list for a bit (thanks to a next fest demo). I'm glad to see it's had some good changes.
Pretty dangerous to assume that people will use their brains...

Usually split waves have some convergance point if you pullback further.
Basically Orcs Must Die with a Halo-Skin?
This looks cool, thanks for the video.
Small tip: let your traps kill/damage enemies first. Then shoot. Not the other way around!
That way you could save ammo ;-)
