@@gerardjansens1748 I think the arp thing still followed 8/8 / 4/4, you can see it in his midi that follows the chord prog, it shifts by one note every time so if you solo'd that it'd just sound like your everyday 4/4 prog. He had a nice drop tho, yes it mainly had a tuplet thing going on but otherwise the edm feel quickly falls apart a bit.

I love genres that tend to use changing and weird time signatures, like Math Rock or IDM. Hits some deep hidden dopamine receptor in the recesses of my slowly smoothing and aging brain.

Time signatures like 7/16 become a lot easier if you think of it as a measure of 3/16 + a measure of 4/16

a way easier way to write wacky time signatures (for me at least) is to write in compound time, so like breaking it down into smaller bits. been writing a song in 13/4 for a little bit and I basically broke it down into a measure of 5/4, then two of 4/4 (obviously there's other ways to break it down that's were the fun part is). basically makes it feel like you have an extra beat every three bars
100% agree. I'm a guitarist and that's usually the easiest way to break down songs with goofy timing for a solo or something

the hack for weird time signatures is just breaking up the pulse into smaller more manageable ones, I have a song I made where the pulse is essentially *7/4 6/4 7/4 8/4 - repeat* but it still feels surprisingly followable, it’s just very fluid and has different melodies overlapping across time signatures
