Great clip demonstrating some MOW work. Less glamorous side of the hobby.
Thank you for the Saturday morning run! Again you remind me why Vermont is my favorite New England state!
I really need to get one of those weed torch attachments :) Perhaps a small water tank on the other side of the flat car would be helpful for spot fires ;)
Is it a bird ? Is it a plane ? No it's flat car man !
I think the weed burner is the way to go. Chemicals will just leave dead weeds along the ROW.
I like the low angle camera views.
The burner leaves dead weeds, too.
Texas is going through a drought and multi-county Burn Ban.. It’s fun to watch! I miss the rain.. Nice video! Have a blessed Saturday y’all!
I am also from Texas because of the drought on the Fourth of July all of the big firework shows were canceled is in certain counties fireworks have been banned but yesterday Weatherford Texas in Parker County got a thunderstorm that went through
@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan Hico and Evant farther south got 103+ highs 80 degree lows, for about 45 straight days/nights, as Gatesville water transmission supply line broke again and had cut off Hamilton and Bosque counties. McGregor, TX has water.. No long rain showers since January-Feb-March or last year.
Great way to get rid of weeds on the track, but can you please have a fire extinguisher with you next time? A simple water extinguisher or even a bucket of water. A foot isn't the best for putting out fires! haha I wouldn't recommend dry chemical extinguishers either, they make a horrible mess. Love the videos!
Bucket of water... simple yet effective 🙂
Had to use one of those powder extinguishers once, it did a great job, but oy what a mess!
in the northeast the forest is always wet, you can throw lit matches into the woods all day long, they all go out......if the leaves actually start to burn, a foot or a shovel is very effective....
@@billbwks you are right in most cases, but all it takes is for 1 little fire to get out of control and next thing you know, you made it to the local news. I live in Upstate NY, we have dry times and burn bans for this reason. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it! 😁
Great vid! Man, time flies. Seems like just the other day you were plowing snow.
Friend of mine has a road that is pretty big. he used the vinegar-soap-acid mixture to keep the weeds gone. he made a tanker car that has an arm that is 4 feet long and 1/2 of it is to the left and the other 1/2 is to the right. He has enough spray nozzles to cover a 4 foot wide area. He uses the compressor that the engine has for the breaks to pressurize the tank. It works very nicely... The solution is so cheep that he can use it every month as needed.
Tell me more of the mixture of which you speak, for I am interested in trying it on our killer Australian weeds.
I assume it is 99% sulfuric acid ;)
@@martythemartian99 I'm not sure. All I know is that he uses it. He is up in Michigan and I will not see him for some time... Sorry...
Thanks
I have to say you did a pretty good job on restoring your box cab electric engine she runs good as new
Thanks! Overall, she's doing great! I still have one issue with it. I'll have to do a video when I fix it.
Oh sorry forgot that the rails are Aluminum, they would powder away with
acid , but on the other side a lye { basic } might work, also some petroleum
based solvents do kill weeds & grass VMP naptha does it in 3 days.
By adding the dish soap decreases surface tension and wets out the solution on the plants.
So that is why there was so many propane tanks near the one building. burning is better
then chemical applications, so often you do not know the extended effects will be on the land.
Acetic acid , vinegar with a bit higher concentration used as a weed killer. without side effects.
yes adding soap will help with the vinegar kill the weeds. great video, nice to see the day to day
operations of the Mill Brook RR. take care and be safe out there.barry
Acetic acid erodes aluminum, so I have to be careful for that.
Also, love your videos.🍻
Thanks!
Nice video and thanks. I use the permanent Roundup weed killer. Sometimes I'll mix 24D with it, get double the effect, and add a drop of soap. I suggest you add a couple if drops of dish detergent to your spray concoction. It'll stick better. Secret is to shower after using any spray.
I'm a Vietnam vet sprayed over with Agent Orange. We drank and bathed in the stuff. It killed everything. I liked that stuff being out in the in jungles. Eaglegards...
First of all, thank you for your service to our country in a most difficult time.
Secondly, this method of weed control isn't perfect. Roundup does work better and showering is definitely recommended even after burning them.
@@MillBrookRailroad You're welcome. Always like the videos and laugh at some comments which are funny. The kicker is Monsanto made Agent Orange and invented Roundup. Monsanto now Bayer, the company that made the nerve gas in WW II. Thanks for the reply.
Lol never a dull moment on your RR 🤣😎👍
...until I get the chainsaw out. Then there are plenty of dull moments.
The real railroads did the same way of weed control many eons ago, they fitted a tube the width of the roadbed with burners, and attached it to a flatcar or engine pilot, lit it, and moved at a workable pace, they usually had a tanker car with water behind the burner flat or engine, to put out small fires if they started.
I've seen film of a speeder with a weed burner trailer and another speeder following some distance behind with a water tank and a pumper.
@@MillBrookRailroad others have suggested you use a homemade liquid weed killer, the one ive see most often uses vinegar, liquid dish detergent, and salt. Its cheaper than commercial weed killers, and safer than burning, but you know whats best for your use. Hmmmmmm, was that fellow trying to use the flatcar for a surfboard??
Great work guys! I use the same burner for my garden here in Germany.
Thanks!
The newest loco on Mill Brook roster:
Jonathan !
He doesn´t even run on 24V Juice...
Is the Mill Brook Railroad logo by chance inspired by the Milwaukee Road logo?
It is.
I would have a tanker car filled with Roundup and just hook it to the engine and spray spray spray as you go around the track.👍
I have a weed sprayer car. If i ever finish it, I'll spray weed control solution along the track. These things take time to build.
This is the old way they stunted weeds in crop feilds... they killed or wilted the weeds before the 1950s to stun the weeds and grasses before chemicals came just regular use of this during summer and spring should make it tough for weeds to get a hold
You need an Indian tank like we use on the forest fire detail.
Not a bad idea.
How is that suspension working out?
On the 70? It's not installed yet. Springs are on order and I still need to sand blast the chassis.
I just 'reported' 3 comments promoting Russian Porn. WHY can't these "Idiots" leave clean and educational videos alone? FYI - The largest scale I'm into is "G" or Garden Railroad. Smallest is "N" Scale 🙂
well, those idiots are generally automated scripts that just post links indiscriminately. But I don't see them, so great job!
Is a constant battle. Thankfully, the spam bots only strike when the video is first put up. They're getting more numerous, though. I reported two more.
Well it’s been a while sence a derailment 😁👍
Shhhh! Don't say that so loud! :-)
i thougt they where going to use the tank car
I still haven't finished the tank car sprayer.
What happened? Did youtube decide it was to show weed burning?
I took a risk. It didn't get demonitized this time and I have no idea.
@@MillBrookRailroad Gary beat me to it! I was going to comment on the dreadful display of flagrant herbicide! Someone needs to call the Weed Police! 👮 😉
@@tommanion5504 They stopped working at 4:20.
You had a Rachel strap and the tank fell off.hhhhmmmmmmm
The strap only holds things on if you use it.
Use herbicide
Fire is faster and I had a reporter from the local paper coming the next day.
Why do you work with special needs helpers?
One of the helpers is his son......
