If ever a work could be said to sum-up the French tradition of timbre, lyricism, poise, elegance and charm (with a little insouciance & melancholie thrown in) it would be this... with just a hint of Stravinsky to further spice the mix. Bravo M. Poulenc!
A little jewel of a work, both deeply profane and profoundly sacred. The shimmering calm of the ending is a uplifting and comforting experience. I think that the soloist felt this, as I fancy those are tears that I see on her face and that she wipes away after the highly charged moment of silence when the work fades a niente. I think the audience felt it too: the auditorium is completely silent.
Omagoodness, as we say in West Virginia (USA)... I've never heard the final bars of this Mass-movement cantata received with so much reverent silence. This is the most tastefully accompanied performance I've heard in a while, and the avoidance of over-playing (particularly in the winds and brass) makes the balance work perfectly; for once, I don't think OPRF's spiffy sound engineering is the primary reason. Maestro Franck's tempos are blessedly un-draggy and prove that you don't need glacial tempos in the slow movements. Lauren Michelle's un-showy solos are utterly perfect, and yes, she makes them look deceptively easy. The chorus stays in perfect time throughout, and I've never heard a live performance of the Laudamus Te, with its insistent back-beats, come off so cleanly. God bless you all!

Heavenly Poulenc treasure! No one in the composing world like Poulenc. "Gloria" is one of his best! Beautiful combination of lyric beauty, humor and outright satire! Poulenc is adverse to deep tragedy, but in his earthy way he bounces his way from heaven to hell and and back to earth in such an entrancing way. He captures what great choral music should be!
Poulenc wrote two great operas, DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES and LA VOIX HUMAINE, that arguably show that he was hardly "averse to deep tragedy," in the world both of the spirit and of the ego. And what about his STABAT MATER?
A good rule of thumb with the Poulenc Gloria: you should have twice as many choir singers as you do orchestra players. It's a big piece and they're working hard to sing over the orchestra and fill the hall. They did well considering they aren't on risers and are kind of shoved in the back in the dark. This is why choirs need unions too.
A secular flat for conclusion though.
Marvellous! On a trivial note, it seems a bit unfair that the singer had to stand all the time, while the conductor gets a seat. I suspect that the spectacular cut of her dress would have been spoilt if she had sat down.
Also I don't think she would have sat even if she was given the opportunity to, as singing while on a chair is very suboptimal for breath control unless you're very upright.
Everybody has a bad day now and then. I'm studying this piece for a performance in about a month, and as the principal trumpet, I'm sweating some of these intervals already.
¡Bellísima interpretación, muchas gracias!
Ce Gloria est suffoquant de beauté. Lauren Michelle est très convaincante.
Lauren Michelle has a lovely voice and her interpretation of the Poulenc Gloria is excellent.
there are few moments in music as rapturously beautiful in sound as the last few minutes of this piece!
what a GLORIOUS performance... and HOW I adore this work!!!! Poulenc FOREVER!

Exquisite singing this early morning in the sacred space between the end of the old year and 2022. Thank you, from my heart, Martha in Maine USA

@@treesny Oops, you are absolutely right and I am wrong!
merveilleuse interprétation et très belle voix solo.
Soliste : Lauren Michelle, soprano.
What a sparkling gem! Wonderful piece, performed gorgeously! Bravo à tutti!
MAGNIFIQUE !!!
the chords at the end of the laudamus te blow my mind every time. "LAUDA- LAUDA- LAUDAMUS TE!"
Quelle merveilleuse interprétation !

Very moving - superb musicianship by all - Bravissimo!!!
lovely
This performance is CURTIS material.
A revisit for me on vocal study...absolutely exquisite.

It's perfectly.
If they don't play 21:13 and on at my funeral, I'm waking up.
Fantastique
Yes! Stunning!
Perfect

they couldn't have gotten a chair for this poor lady?
Admirable.
who is a female violinist sitting next to concertmaster?
her name??
Virginie Buscail

Trumpet 1 missing notes like in all orchestra

@@guyjclark That's fair but youd think with an ego like most trumpet players have they wouldnt miss so many notes all the time
Is it just me or does this composition sound like sour milk?
It's absolutely just you

Domine Deus the HARMONIES! Poulenc saw GOD
If he didn't see God he surely heard the music of heaven.
Magnifique!
She made me sob!
