    "Granted, we are huge."
The emission figures were per capita. Why does the size of your country matter?

Yes, okay, maybe you do need cars to survive in the US, but why does everyone have to put their ass in a 2-ton vehicle? The rest of the world gets by with small cars!

Hi from Switzerland! No, there isn’t a divide about climate change: everyone believes it. The point of contention is if humans had a hand in it or not (and that’s a minority of people debating that)!

Same in the Netherlands, although there are few nutjobs that might deny it. How can you deny climate change when looking at the all the natural disasters in the past decade alone, all those fires, heavy storms, flooding, record setting temperatures?

    The core of the problem imo is that the USA has the $ in place of a brain;
    - the American mindset is immediateness (devil-may-care attitude), and, most of all PROFITS;
    - selfishness (I won't change MY way of life/comfort one single iota if I don't feel directly concerned, and tough tit for the future generations since I'll be long dead when they'll have to cope with the consequences),
    - ignorance of/contempt for the rest of the world.
I think, Bryan, that, contrary to what you said, the relentless "it's our gvt's fault" doesn't hold because that gvt is elected by people who show that they are the ones who don't care much, otherwise they'd never cease to petition, demonstrate, boycott, etc. until they were heard. And look at how quickly his vile successor undid most of what Obama had done in that domain!
Also to blame are the almighty lobbies, of course.
Look at what the city of Paris is implementing here: "Paris's plan to ditch ACs and expand urban cooling system • FRANCE 24 English". USA, take notes!
But the rest of the world could do all the efforts possible, as long as our (huge) "neighbour" will continue to massively eff-up the entire Planet (as you may know, pollution knows no borders!)!...
India and China have "the excuse" of still being developing countries whilst the Western world hasn't.
Another video you might find interesting about the USA's obsession with huge trucks in lieu of sensible cars: "These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us" - Not Just Bikes, and "Why Americans love big cars" - Vox
Also, Lynda, you're right to point out that in the USA, nothing can be done without a car. It's all due to your ridiculous "zoning regulations". That too should be tackled but ...
Here's another interesting video by the excellent Not Just Bikes channel: "Why City Design is Important (and why I hate Houston)"
    Enjoy!

In sweden we accept the climate change as a reality. It's not a debate. What we debate is how much we should sacrifice in the name of climate change. Some people want to go back to the stone age and some want to rush to another planet. A middle road is hopefully found instead.

    • @Lewtable
      @Lewtable 3 дня назад

As a fellow Swede imo the only really correct answer is to try and serve as a good model for what countries should achieve and perhaps develop methods that would help others achieve the same results more efficiently while focusing on just meeting our own climate goals. I do feel like we've had a bit of a superhero syndrome the past two decades about our international impact and need to accept that to a certain degree universal change is needed for many of the worlds problems. There is absolutely nothing Sweden or Scandinavia can do on its own to achieve the necessary results and hamstringing our own nations to a massive degree is just asinine. The concept of being a martyr can only exist as an individual choice and should never be made a reasonable expectation of others and as such countries as a larger meta-organism shouldn't adopt it.

The discussion about if to what degree humans causes climate change in most of northern europe is (when the discussion happens at all, it is rare to discuss it these days) is on the scale of "are we responsible for all of it or 'only' the vast majority of it" (the fact that we are responsible for most of it (above "steady state") is considered settled (with caveats for if research turns up something new)).

A lot of things were mixed up in the video. Plastic bags and recycling are not primarily about global warming. It's about plastic in the oceans. When it comes to energy consumption, it's not just cars but also things like air conditioning systems etc. (Most of it comes from industry anyway.) And even if Europe emits less CO² than America, it's still far too much.
However, the argument that the USA is so big is quite nonsense. Europe is not really smaller. The distance from Lisbon to Moscow is about the same as from Los Angeles to New York City.

    • @klarasee806
      @klarasee806 10 дней назад

I would like to add something: The plastic in the oceans is a major contributor to climate change. When it decomposes (as well as in every phase of the plastic's life cycle), large amounts of greenhouse gases are released.
Of course, plastic production also contributes significantly to climate change!

Just a comment about the start of the video and the gun chat. Guns are not for defence, they're for attack they're designed to kill the idea that they're good for defence is just propaganda from the gun lobby. If you want defence spend the thousands you would have spent on a gun on proper locks for doors and windows, a loud ass alarm will scare more thieves then a gun will, hell a sign in window saying alarmed that costs $5 will offer more defence in 99% or cases. There are statistically more people shot accidentally every year then are shot as an act of defence, a gun increases your danger it does not make you safer.
And yes killing an intruder should be illegal, self defence should be proportionate, stealing a TV and being shot dead are not proportionate, if people don't want the punished for killing people even intruders then they should put the gun away and call the police. Stuff is insured if your life isn't threatened you don't get to kill someone because it's not defence of self it's defence of stuff and stuff isn't worth a life.

Ok, enough f*ing around. I believe it is a fundamentally embedded perception in the US that it is ok just the way it is, so nothing really needs to change. It is hard to change an entire society‘s opinion, particularly if politics is divided about it or just misuses it as a mean of distinction in shallow political arguments.

You can drive between 110 and over 300 miles on a single charge, depending on the car. In Sweden we also have sort of car pools. companies with several electric cars, all from very small to a smaller truck size in which you can rent by the hour/s or days. You just book them by your self and then pick them up and leave them back when done.
Also forgot to add that i don't think i heard any other country deny climate changes the way America do. But i also belive it have to do with the press in America. The news in your country seem to be able to just poor out flat out lies and tell you what ever they can come up with. Some of your news channels are somewhere around aliens took my wife and i married a pig news, rather the feeling like something you can rely on.
In Europe most new channels are politics and religiouse independent so they just give us the news and it is up to us to decide what we feel about it. I mean obviously if there is something effecting the enviroment badly they will give us the facts about that and then it is up to us to react and act. But the facts are rarely lies and if there is, at least in Sweden they will have to correct it the day after or the like because the govement smacked them.
WIth that in mind i think it is easier for America to feed lies to their people then it is in other countries.

the usa has an infrastructure made for JUST cars. you have to take the car when you go shopping, for example. you would need small grocery stores with basic goods in residential areas 10-15 minutes walking distance. cycle 5 minutes. yes, I believe that it is us humans who are responsible for climate change. it costs to make a change, of course you want an electric car, but if you are on a low salary you cannot afford it.

I have to disagree with the last lady. It is not the USA that can or should lead. Nor is it the EU, which is currently obstructing e-car imports from Asia, even though European manufacturers are not capable of producing such vehicles cheaply for a mass market. It is China that is leading the way when it comes to green energy.
By the way, the size of a country is an excuse for using diesel or gasoline-powered cars, but not a good one. China is also very big, look at what is happening there. Public transportation and e-mobility in the city, high-speed connections nationwide. And - even with an electric vehicle you can drive longer distances if you allow time for recharging in between. One thing is clear, without giving up some conveniences, everything will get worse. I read the day before yesterday that Phoenix had over 38°C for a hundred days in a row this summer. I would have died there already.
One more thing - it's a bit sad that you're no longer sitting on the couch.

and it doesent help their EV´s are exploding all over china
i agree we cant keep up with the cheap prices.but just like we saw tested today temu have pfas in 9 out of 10 disposable kitchen items
when we look at the green energy china used compared to what they use when it comes to coal.
they are still far behind eu for example, and they wont get infront with production methods like that
its also about the markeds, china need the orders for the big projects to win anything
and they are pretty much left with africa and russia when it comes to wind for example then its hard to be in front of anything

IDK, Electric cars can go around 500 km without being charged, maybe longer now, it's been a while since I checked it up, and for me, I don't really want to drive farther, so it's time to check into a hotel/hostel or whatever after that distance, and then the car can be recharged.
Granted, if you're a couple, or a group of people, you can take turns driving so it's possible to drive 24/7, but that's not my thing.
Here, travelling by train takes maybe half the time it takes to drive, and you can get some work done on the train.
We started recycling in the late 1800s so it's amusing to me to hear people saying that this or that country is so good at it, seriously, you don't have shit on Sweden.
It's a bit funny that some people say something like "China is contributing to more climate change that the rest of the world combined", while it's probably true it's no excuse to do nothing, and perhaps one of many reasons to stop buying Chinese goods, I mean it doesn't really matter if your country stops polluting but buys almost everything from China where everything is powered by gas, oil, or coal, and then shipping on top.

Im 47 from the UK, we know the climate is changing, it always has, ice ages were a thing , we were once a desert, a rain forest and a tundra , we are currently in a warming up period although its hard to believe as summers in the 80s and 90s were months long, we had hose pipe bans through drought, now it just rains all the time and theres floods, maybe thats why it went from global warming to "climate change" to continue the narrative, on one day of the year it might hit a new high like 101° but be raining a week either side of that day and the news will all pump out the usual nonsense about climate change to get you to buy electric cars because everybody in government has shares in the new electric narrative despite the mining and manufacturing of batteries will be another narrative to fine us for in the decades to come saying that electric cars are bad and we have to pay a green tax AGAIN, because thats how government works. Smog is now heavily reduced in the uk especially in city's so yes humans played a part in that but with volcanoes going off all round the planet you could ban cars for a decade and one volcano could fart out twice the omissions in a day, so do we play a big part in global climate change? I dont know , but what i do know is mother nature can make that decision in the blink of an eye. As for recycling absolutely yes , reduce one time use plastics absolutely yes. Recycle paper and glass 👍 i have a car but use a bicycle to commute daily and get my power from solar panels on my house its not much but if climate change is made by humans i must be helping a bit👍

Adapting to climate change and trying to slow it down takes money, long term strategy, change in our current way of life and (global) commitment. Things the US is not great at. “Why should I pay for something that might become catastrophic after my lifetime?”
Even if (big big if) the current acceleration of climate change wasn’t caused by human activity we can still try and slow it down. We did it with acid rain and the ozone layer.

    Bonjour !
In France, climate denialism is not progressing. Those who purely and simply deny the reality of climate change were only 8% in 2019, and there are still 8% in 2022. This is more than half as much as in the United States, Australia or Sweden.
    BUT!
lRevisionism regarding the responsibility of human activities in climate change is experiencing, at the worst time, a worrying progression.
Indeed, where 70% of respondents accepted in 2019 the fact that “there is climate change of human origin”, this will only be 63% in 2022.
If the belief in a natural origin of climate change seems at first sight less outrageous than the position consisting of denying its very reality altogether, it is in fact just as harmful for the future of the planet: by denying the problem as well that our collective capacity to resolve it, both allow us to take refuge in the deceptive and dangerous comfort of fatalism and inaction.
    Where are the climate skeptics?
    Rather among the working classes
Those among whom skepticism has increased the most in recent years are the popular categories: if asked if “there is climate change of human origin”, “low incomes” go from more than 70% of positive answers to 2019 (year of the “yellow vest” movement) to 58% in 2022. This trajectory is all the more notable since, conversely, “high incomes” are moving in the right direction (+4 points), and average incomes are stable.
This is bad news: whether it is thermal renovation, renewal of the automobile fleet or the increase in costs caused by the relocation and decarbonization of consumer goods production, “low wages” will be the first impacted by the financial efforts that will accompany the energy transition. The latter cannot be accomplished without their consent, and the development observed here is worrying: who would accept sacrifices that they consider useless?
    Mostly among young people
Incarnated by the figure of Greta Thunberg and mobilized in the “student strikes for the climate”, the young generation would be more sensitive, more trained, even more anxious than the others about climate change. By hinting at the emergence of an age group aware of environmental issues and ready to adopt more sustainable lifestyles, this generational “great greening” appears to be a source of hope for the future.
The ObsCOP figures put this assessment into perspective. Far from the ambient media and activist discourse, the youngest are in reality the age group most affected by a form of climate denialism: 42% of 16-24 year olds fall into the category of climate skeptics, a figure which only declines until age 44 before rising to an almost similar level (40%) beyond age 55.
Mostly among right-wing and far-right voters
Beyond these socio-economic variables, support for climate skepticism also depends on political and partisan factors. This is what ObsCOP shows by filtering the results according to the vote of respondents during the first round of the 2022 presidential election: it is among the voters of Nicolas Dupont-Aignan (64%), Eric Zemmour (58%) and Jean Lassalle (45%) that we find the highest proportion of skeptics. A high proportion of skeptics are found among abstainers (48%), as well as among the voters of Valérie Pécresse (41%) and those of Marine le Pen (40%).
Rather among those who are currently still sheltered from climate change
The ObsCOP figures show this: the positioning of the French in relation to the scientific consensus on the climate is therefore a matter of socio-economic profile and partisan affiliation. But, beyond these sociological and political criteria, the results of the survey show that it also depends on the personal experience lived by each person.
We note that while 80% of climate believers have already noticed the effects of climate change in their region, this figure drops to 60% of climate skeptics.
In detail, climate skeptics are overall twice as likely as climate believers to declare that they have not suffered the consequences of a climatic disorder in recent years, whether a heatwave (66 % versus 35%), a drought (52% versus 27%), a flood (18% versus 9%) or the drying up of a river or lake (44% versus 19%).
On the climate, many French people are therefore still clearly clinging to the idea that they only believe what they see - a denial which, with the multiplication of extreme climatic events, is unlikely to be able to hold for very long under this form.
I will stop there, because the analysis of the facts would require many other paragraphs, on the causes, the culprits of this negative trend.
I would simply say that I took the above from a study by the left-leaning Jean Jaurès Foundation, sourced from a 2022 polling survey from the International Observatory on Climate and Public Opinions, and conducted by Ipsos in 29 countries on five continents, comprising two-thirds of the world's population and including the largest emitters of CO₂.
Well, to make a long story short, it’s not a win! 😆

That your country is so huge is a BS reason not to go electric for cars.
We in Europe do also roadtrips from country to country. North to South and East to West and vice versa, Denmark/The Netherlands to France/Spain/Italy/Croatia for example.
It is the willingness to invest in electric charge stations and go electric and explain to me why the big cars when you can do it with a relatively small hatchback.
Those GMC trucks are way to big to drive here in Europe in old city centers on our smaller roads and they gulp gasoline.
In the most countries in the rest of the world it isn't a discussion anymore if climate change is happening but how to reduce our emissions.
It is the willingness to change something and even if it costs money.

No, I do not know of any "debate" that climate change is real. What the heck? Debate?
Perhaps my government is not in the pocket of oil companies

    • @Lewtable

iirc Didn't Florida fairly recently approve of books literally written by publishers funded by oil companies being sent to elementary schools to teach kids about how good and important oil is? Nvm, it was videos by Prager*. But it is true that Florida legislatives approved it.
"Videos that compare climate activists to Nazis, portray solar and wind energy as environmentally ruinous and claim that current global heating is part of natural long-term cycles will be made available to young schoolchildren in Florida, after the state approved their use in its public school curriculum.
Slickly-made animations by the Prager University Foundation, a conservative group that produces materials on science, history, gender and other topics widely criticized as distorting the truth, will be allowed to be shown to children in kindergarten to fifth grade after being adopted by Florida’s department of education."
Source is a Guardian article, but who-ever reading can copy "Florida approves of movies about oil elementary schools" into google to find it, youtube usually don't like URLs in the comments.
*"Despite its name, Prager is not an academic institution and does not confer degrees. It is a rightwing advocacy group founded in 2009 that produces various materials, including magazines and videos, that have been criticized by experts for inaccurate portrayals of slavery and racism in the US."

there isn’t a divide about climate change, even the most conservative parties accept that there i problem.
What people get wrong is, the planet is fine, the planet is millions of years old and had many climate changes, we as humans and all species living now have a problem, we as humans will not survive a mass extinction.

I think it is fair to say that people understand that the planet itself will go on, but as a species we have a built in response to value self-preservation. Nihilism simply isn't a very produce argument to whether the current situation is a humanitarian crisis or not.

Neither in Spain nor in Switzerland are there debates about climate change. Maybe some individual person, but not in general.

I'm an old fart ( 55 ) from UK and think climate change is a real threat.. i do look at the facts and science behind any claims so can see there is a genuine reason to believe it's real.
The sad part is the planet is thriving environment that supports us, what we do should have an affect on it as it has no way to adjust to our population growth and pollution levels. ( other than asking a local meteor for a nudge )
We react badly and are weakened when ill , so a living planet would be out of balance too.. i have seen some hot summers and cold winters here in the UK , but in last 10 years it seems to be so unpredictable and erratic lately.
Luckily i'm on the last half of my lifespan so i got to enjoy the 70's/80's/90's so if it has to end i'm good :).

what is 115° F? You just mentioned that most of your viewers are non-US viewers, so nobody uses Fahrenheit. Only the Micronesia island, Marshall islands, Bahamas and Cayman islands use Fahrenheit aside the US. Even all other american countries around the US use Celsius. UK and Canada uses both, I guess.

@4:05 That's how it works in most of the civilized world AFAIK. Unless you did it in self defense to save your own life.
@6:25 Clearly an old video. So far in 2024 EVs account for like 89% of new cars sold. In August it was like 94% or something, which is a new monthly record.
Plenty of EVs that can do 250-300 miles on a charge. But I guess Americans are in a rush and can't take a break for 30 minutes to charge.

That last part was BS. Why should the US lead the way? How about looking in the mirror and do your own part.

The USA wants too lead the world and tell it what too do , until it may cost them ,if you want too be the leader of the free world lead don't cherry pick and say we want too lead the world here because it benefits us and we don't want too lead here because it will affect profits , it's not the normal citizen that doesn't want too help it's political parties bought and paid for by corporations who brainwash their supports to believe that climate change doesn't exist as soon as a big usa corporation can make big profits from helping climate change watch them buy a politician and change the stance of what ever party.
