  • Jeff will visit San Juan Bautista near Monterey, California, where the largest collection of graves of Donner Party survivors are located. Patrick Breen, who wrote the diary during the ordeal in 1846-47, and his family members are buried here.
He will also visit the historic Plaza in town where the Mission is located as well as buildings used by Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak for filming of the Alfred Hitchcock film, "Vertigo."

Thank you Jeff for the great story as usual and the Donner party was always one of my interests as a boy. I met Jimmy Stewart as a teenage boy in the 1980s when I lived in Dearborn Michigan. He had donated a replica plane of Charles Lindbergh's that was used in the movie he protrayed Lindbergh. Mr. Stewart used to come to the Henry Ford Museum to sit with his wife and look at the plane. I was 16 in 1984 and sat down next to him to say "Hi". He was a very nice person and his wife was very sweet.

Another great video. You definitely have a knack for coming up with content that is of interest to me personally. Back in the mid 80's I was fascinated with "Vertigo" and I went with my then girlfriend on a two day trip checking out all the filming locations, you know, Fort Point, Mission Dolores, assorted other SF sites, and San Juan Bautista. I remember being seriously disappointed that the mission tower from the movie didn't actually exist. In retrospect, I should have known, as it is pretty obvious in the film that the tower was just a matt painting....but I didn't realize it until we got there. But in all other ways, the mission and surrounding buildings are pretty timeless, and look exactly the same now as they did in 1986 and in 1958.

Thank you! So much of California has changed since I was a boy. I guess with more people means less intimacy and more streamlined everything. What you could do in 1960 you can’t do today. More people, more wrongdoing and more rules. At times it feels like we are devolving not progressing. Fortunately some spots look the same, like this town. May it stay that way!

@@jbenziggy Exactly. California used to be a paradise. But now there are places I loved as a kid that I simply will no longer visit for any reason....like the entire city of San Francisco. Without delving into politics, I will say that only part of the negative change is due to increasing population. But the state doesn't "have" to have changed for the worse anywhere near as much as it has.

Another especially interesting episode for me. An ancestor on my mother's side of the family, Laura S. (Lenhart) Breen was the wife of Peter Breen, grandson of Patrick and Margaret. I've never been to San Juan Bautista, but this episode has definitely piqued my interest - thanks for doing what you do!

So much of California's history is just left to rot and run into the ground. It's just a shame and I've never understood why its history matters to so few... after all buildings that date to the the 1700s are rare, especially out here, and should be treated with much more respect...
    ...sigh...

The Donner Party was part of the 100-plus wagon train that left Independence, MO in May of 1846. One group out of the train that they sometimes traveled with was the Dickinson-Gordon party led by Capt. Gallant Duncan Dickinson. The groups would change leads and positions in the train as each group's ability to travel also changed. Dickinson would not take the Hastings Cutoff while the Donners were ahead at that time. The Dickinson group arrived first near present-day Truckee and were preparing for the ascent of the Sierras when the Donners showed up weary and exhausted.
Storm clouds were beginning to form over the summit and Capt. Dickinson tried to convince the Donners that waiting to make the climb to rest would be unwise. The Donners chose to rest several days, and we know the outcome. The Dickinson Party was the last group to make the climb ahead of the Donners and dealt with snow over the summit. They, too, had to be rescued on the western side of the Sierras because of lack of food. They had sent one member of their group ahead for help from Johnson's Ranch on the Bear River, and they suffered no loss of life.
Once in the valley and in the midst of a war, they were directed to the Santa Clara mission and participated in the Battle of Santa Clara(Battle of the Mustard Stalks). This had been brought on by Capt. Chas. Weber who was rustling horses from the Californio ranches for use by the California Battalion. Eventually, many members of the group drifted down to Monterey and began several early businesses. Dickinson learned the brick-making trade from his grandfather and commenced building the first brick house in California. It still stands and is part of the state park in old town Monterey.
The gold rush hits. Monterey becomes a ghost town with everyone leaving for Coloma. Dickinson girls were scooping nuggets out of the river with tablespoons. Soon they drifted down to Placerville(Dry Diggings), Mokelumne Hill(Dickinson Gulch), and Stockton(Weberville). Dickinson set up Stockton's first lodging establishment(the Dickinson House) that was burned in one of Stockton's early fires in May 1851. This changed Dickinson's financial fortunes even though he was appointed as the first Prefect for the San Joaquin Judicial District and was a signer for the city of Stockton's incorporation.
To make a long story short, taxes were coming due on Dickinson's brick house in Monterey, and a Sheriff's sale was set on the property that Dickinson had paid $29 for. So, in 1851, Patrick Breen of San Juan Bautista bought the house, property, & 60,000 bricks for $1091. No doubt the Breens remembered their former traveler from that wagon train!
A good story would be on the history of the members of the Dickinson-Gordon party.
