- Forgotten Project 1976 Chevy El Camino SS Junkyard Find. Could this long since abandoned 76 elky project actually be a real Super Sport? Well I'm just gonna roll with it and say it is unless someone in the comments proves it to not be so. Well regardless of whether it is or not, it was mostly all there minus some interior parts. The body wasn't in bad shape outside of dings here and there. The hood was also kinked. This one appeared to have a 400 small block with a four barrel carburetor. I would have loved for it have had a set of swivel bucket Seats but she came with a bench instead. She was also rocking some cragars but I really wasn't feeling that style of wheels. The bed looked solid as well as the tailgate. Overall, this one could have been saved in my opinion. Alas her fate is sealed now.
Its a shame it sat neglected all those years. Solid and everything in place it would make a good project
400 Chevy's are torque monster's!!!
Absolutely great engine!
I'm *pretty* sure the SS option continued thru 77, but like you said just a trim and badge deal 73-77, love your videos man!!!
👍
Actually the ss models had the option for the small block 400 or the big block 454 so it was definitely more than just a trim package
Mr. B. Here ! that is a SS with a 400 CID, I have a GMC Sprint same year and engine , You would pay more for the Sprint and add packages same vehicle as El Camino . Sprint only make 5,000 that year. So that vehicle will need a lot of skill and love to bring it back. My Sprint hell of a ride !
If only the previous owner pursued that restoration. It still looks saveable to me as it stands!
Love your videos on things that are neglected, abused and then junked. Just too bad, as with a little care they'd still.be on the road. Case in point, I have 2 71 Datsun 521 trucks still licensed on the road.
It's really a shame how many that could be saved are ultimately sent to the yard
New subscriber. El Caminos brought me. Keep em coming.
Its always amazing to me that some people
Settle for scrap price when it seems they could sell it for more. This seems pretty solid.🤔
You're right ✅ some people don't know any better! The parts for the El Camino body are very, very hard to find!
That would make a great restoration project
Another one worth fixing up. It’d take a lot of work, but could be done. Hopefully someone will rescue it. I used to have a white 84.
well worth saving in that shape
one day away from being street worthy. would love to find one of these
Benny. My heart breaks with every video you send! I had a 77 el Camino SS. Nothing but trim and stripes on the package. That grille emblem looks correct and hard to find! Thanks for sharing!
I had a burgundy 76 gmc version of this ..fun truck
I think everyone at one time or another had some of those wooden handle screwdrivers.
❤️ el Camino's🤩 she must have bin a great car, al black with red interieur😎cool wheels👍🏼
Grab it. It's a nice late 70's car that had yet to see it's full potential... Nice looking car that suffered from fuel embargo times...
Whoa Nelley, it looks like an "SS", I guess..... The SS package for 1976 was available on any V8 model and gave you 15x7 Rally wheels with white letter tires, sport mirrors, SS badging on the grille, fenders and tailgate. You also got body side striping. Some of that appears to be gone on this one. Probably is an SS, but the build sheet is what determines it at this point.
We got the VIN, we win: 1 for Chevrolet, D for Malibu Classic/El Camino Classic, 80 for pickup delivery body style, U for 400 V8 with four barrel, 6 for 1976 model year, R for Arlington, TX assembly and the rest is the production sequence. Nope, air shocks were standard on an El Camino in 1976.
Yup, we got the tag, we can brag: ST76 for 1976 model year, 1AD80 for Chevrolet El Camino, R for Arlington, TX assembly, 74N for Mahogany interior trim, A65 for bench seat with armrest, 19U and 19L for Black upper and lower exterior paint (so you were correct, it was originally black), 05D for the fourth week of May 1976 production.
Whoa Nelley, it's an SS and it's a mess. 4-0-0 with a Holley and for that I'm not jolly (junk). Should have a Q-Jet? You bet. Not many horses in 1976, they all up and quit. Off the road since 2009, not so fine. Was good in '76, now it hit the bricks. Going to be flat, that's that. Was nice back in the day, now it's going away. Going to be squished, and we're a little bit pissed.
Chrome valve covers with wing studs, might be a hopped-up rebuilt SS350 or 400 engine, has 650-800 Holley spreadbore, which is pretty scarce. Good carburetor.
Every 400 died of cooling issues..on to the next one!
Not every 400 had overheating issues. That's a myth that they all overheat, usually if it ran hot you had other issues like a plugged radiator or too small or a cooling system or a block full of rust and debris. I have ran numerous 400s over the years and know alot of other people running 400s some even pushing close to 1,000hp with boost and none of them have overheating issues. Use a good headgasket like a cometic MLS and have the block cleaned really good and make sure the cooling system is clean with a proper fan and you will be good to go.
Quick way to ID a 400 is it will have a notched harmonic balancer, a weighted flywheel/flexplate, the side of the block will have 3 freeze plugs or 2 plugs and a raised casting in the center, and of course you can run the rear casting number. Its always worth checking for. Where I live I could never dream of finding a 400sbc or 6.0ls because the junkyard owners pull those before they put them out on the lot. I really want a 400 for my c10 build but a useable core is like find a needle in a haystack.
IT'S SACRILEGIOUS FOR THIS CAR TO ROT 🤬
Like all of your videos. I love GM A bodies but never had any use for El Caminos. Also don't like the stacked square lights that only the Chevs had.
wonderful car
My brother bought a brand new 77 el Camino, it was a 350 auto on the column, a month later his girlfriend totalled it in wytheville Virginia
Wytheville not far from me..shame about the el camino.
@@buckster2575 yeah, nice area , I grew up in draper Virginia
in early 80's could get set of wooden screw driver set for 4 dollar at discount place still have them somewhere
Only the ss had that cross hatch grill. Painted flat black. I would still buy that grill if its cheep enough. Somebody will pay a hundred for it I bet still. If its a 20 buck deal. 👍
Awesome video!
It's a non SS car. Auto on the column, no bucket seats and non SS steering wheel. Nice Elco for resto.
That is not correct. Buckets were an option, not mandatory on that year SS.
@@googleusergp The car has no SS options. That's my point!
@@jaylongton An SS could come without bucket seats in 1976. The sales brochure does not state that the SS package includes buckets. They were optional on any El Camino.
@@googleusergp I know that.
@@jaylongton Now ya do since I told ya. LOL. You can't say this isn't an SS just like we can't say it is. It has some evidence of being an SS, the only way to confirm is a window sticker (long gone), original dealer paperwork/order form (long gone) or the build sheet (possible). No SS sales code, not an SS. But without that, it's a guess at best.
Last true Super Sport was 1970. After that it was just a trim package. If the forklift drivers would quit denting everything . Those go for good money up here in the rust belt.
Woow if only that 76 Elcamino was near east coast would jump on it real quick probably been nice restoration project finish yes luv Cragers but not what's on their now.
At pick a part they charge 45 for a wheel and 90 for the tire and wheel ... They charge extra for the tire if you don't have them take the tire off the wheel ....
Cool car, this would be a definite fixer upper for myself. Get them mechanics right, roadworthy and leave it ratty for a little while. I wonder if those rims would fit your Pontiac formula, if they did it look cool 😎
In 76 SS is "Super Swaybar" :)
Snag the locks and the key pocket deal discount. 👍
It looks to me like that car would look really cool if those headlights or one solid piece of glass. MR WELSH
Oh man.....
Forget the wheels grab that 400sbc brother 🤙🏼
What the NSS have had bucket seats with a console shift Lower shift
The cross hatch grille was on all of these, man, I could've used the whole thing too! Did someone take it out of there? 🙄 I sure hope so 🙏
It was stripped and the rest they crushed
I'm sorry, I'm just now seeing this, and I just wanted to know if the car is still there and if they are willing to sell or are they going to keep it and part it out.
The power steering you can turn with A pinky finger
Can they be bought? I'd like to have it as a project. I love elcaminos
They won't sell.it now that it's being parted out. They have already turned the title over to the state. It can only be parted out then crushed
@@ClassicRideSociety Why didn't they try to sell that one? They would have made more money off of it by selling it whole than they will parting it out. That car could easily sell for $800.00 or more. You should get those wheels and the engine.
I think this was the 1st year GM put square headlights on everything. I mean just because you could didn't mean you had to.
Close-'75 Caddy's had squares,all of them.Full size Olds/Buicks/Toros and Rivs too.
It is an SS. You always could order the super sports with bench seats and auto on the column. I’ve ordered them and owned one when I sold for tommy Thomas chev. In Panama City Florida
Also that’s an aftermarket steering wheel
True, although many “SS” vehicles left dealerships rather than the GM factories. At this point the build sheet would be the determining factor on that.
Count the freeze plugs I think a 400 has 3 on each side .
2 freeze plugs
@@terrencegiordan9812 not many know that there was 3 frost plugs on 400 SBC
Seems like it’s definitely savable. I hope somebody pulls it out of the yard
I always wanted to take one of these and put it together as a Grand Am or LeMans. They're just non-existent up here though.
I mean if I were selling it here I'd put a little time into dolling it up and try and get it to run and see if I couldn't get two grand out of it.
I dont see why it wouldn't fetch that if we're just made roadworthy. Shame how some people can't see that they could easily get more if they didn't sell to the yard.
Even if it doesn't go down the road, just making it look presentable goes a long ways. Straighten it up inside and a new coat of primer outside.
Life gets in the way, and the thought of a few bucks here and now is appealing to many folks. Some run out of places to store them. Fortunately, I own both properties where I have my cars.
165 hp 400 😂 to move around 4300lbs lol.
Throw a new hood on it and fix it up..good project car..needs some work but fixable.i don't really like the older look I like the 80's ones tho but it is a Elco SS.man
Pretty straight body do they let you buy the whole car out of that junkyard
73 was the last year of the SS package
Nope, '77 in the mid-size Elco, then there was the small "G" body Elco, '78-80. All were SS optional.
Oh well another project somebody got tired of and it is flop. Was a nice muscle car just getting harder and harder to find.
There's another one you should save did u find out about the Rambler??
must be uncomfortable laying on those rocks 😮😬🥴
It sure is
Great video. Its nice to see people taking about these 73-77 A Body cars. I've been playing with them for over 30 years. This appears to be a true SS. It shows signs of the SS stripes under the primer, it has the round gauge instrument cluster, the SS dash emblem, rear stabilizer bar etc. Although the only way to verify a true SS these years is with the build sheet. Here's a link to the 76 SS El Camino I owned a few years back. It's fully optioned with the swivel buck seats.

Another great resource on these cars is g3gm.com. Keep the videos coming!
I'd love to see that BMW
No rust!
Will they sell that car as a whole, the whole car?
Unlikely, once it's out to be picked the VIN has been reported as junked
Do you know if this el camino is still there?
They crushed what was left of it a good while back
Take it home with u and fix it up
ahh it has the SS badge😖🤨🧐
Do they sell these cars u find whole or just parts
Depends on the yard. This yard can sell whole cars but they most of the time they chose to part them out instead
@@ClassicRideSociety thank u boy I had a 72 f 250 years ago
