- Adding African cichlids to your tank can be very difficult, especially if you have an established aquarium with other cichlids already in the tank. I will take you through the steps that I take to lessen the aggression amongst the African cichlids and make it easier for you to add new fish your tank.

i dont mean to be offtopic but does anybody know of a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost the password. I love any tips you can give me.
@Houston Rowan Instablaster ;)
I don't understand how people who watch RUclips, will not give a thumbs up? These people work hard to film and edit the shows we watch, it is the least we can do.
I always forget to and move onto the next video. It's not intentional. It just happens.
@@caewalker9276 I catch myself doing that at times but you can actually go back to the previous video by using either an icon on your screen or the arrow you use on your remote, to backup a movie or show for 15 seconds.
I hope I don't sound like I'm giving anyone heck because it is not my intention. Most of these folks will also answer posted questions. Zenzo (sp?) Is very good about it.
I hope I didn't screw up his name too badly.
I watch RUclips on my TV through my Roku stick....there's no option to like or read comments or leave a comment when your watching that way
Interesting Melissa. I didn’t know that.
@@Bloodhoundfostermom you could be right. Even on my smart tv it is not immediately obvious. To leave comments I have to use my phone, though I suppose using a TV remote would be annoying anyway. Would take a half hour to say anything.
I will check my stepsons Roku, if a person is able to use RUclips it would be good to participate as well. Thanks for this I hadn't thought of this system😃
I always add at least 5 fish at a time. Thanks for the video 👍
I'm learning so much about African cichlids lately. Thanks for sharing this info.
Good explanation and info! I havent added new cichlids to my tank in over a year, despite losing 2, all because i dont want to mess with the balance!
Love this video cause you really hit this subject the right way! I have cichlids and the plant 🌱 in the corner really helps when you got aggression issues in the tank 👍🏻 I seen that less rocks sometimes helps cause there not enough Territory to be claimed and the fish keep moving
Franks Tanks 'fewer' rocks. 😉😊
Never thought about the blue light trick. Cool video zeno. Thanks for the great tips!
That's really cool. The hole blue light concept 💙
I’m excited to do my peacock tank I’m planning and doing lots of research and your African cichlid playlist has really helped!
I like the night club comparison. 🤣
Lol!
Hey Zenzo I was able to re introduce my big hongi using your method worked great Thanks again..
Thanks Kenzo for the tips been following these steps now that i have cichlids water babies and it helps a lot!
Awesome tanks and Great content! You are a well spoken Fishtuber. One of my fav channels on the site. Whenever you get time i would love to see an update on the new lake tang tank you recently scaped. Happy fish keeping my brother 💯
Thank you! Tanganyikan update is coming soon!
As usual, lots of good info on the rift lake cichlids.
So many great ideas in this video! I will start trying all of these when I stock my new tank! Thanks Zenzo!
Hi! Your videos are really great! So well presented and very clear. So enjoyable. Thanks. I have an Mbuna cichlid tank set up 1 week ago. I just added more rocks last night, and plan to buy more Mbunas on the weekend. New rocks only been in for 48 hours by the time new fish come in. Do I need to change the rocks again when adding my new fish on Sunday?
I shared your vedio with one of my service client that has a 180 African tank .. 👍🏼
Love their colors and size but I don't enjoy moving furnishings to accommodate the aggression. It's a different way of thinking like and being the fish. You obviously know how to manage their issues. Thanks!
Great video! And just in time too. Adding some African Cichlids next week.
Another awesome video!
Great video Zenzo keep up the great work mate. hope you have a great day.
Thank you. Same to you!
What’s up chuck Norris ..thanks for another great vedio.. lol 😂 the fish sayin your in my hood fool ...sounds like when I was trying to go to school ..lol
Thx bro..I just lost one new blue dalphin because I did not respect that steps! Next time I will buy more then two at time..
Hey Zenzo, great tip and great video! That particular technique definitely works, as I have done something similar before. I think I saw John do something like this before in one of his old videos. Anyways, you did a great job explaining this technique and rationalizing this method. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Very informative. I learned so much here.
I can't get anymore fish because the boss said no (aka the wife). Lol
Great video. Could you do an update video on your 75g mbuna tank?
Coming soon!
@@TazawaTanks yes plz
Adding 3 or more at a time really helps, too, I've found.
Awesome bro. Great vid!
This is a great video! very good info!
Thanks for sharing!
Hey Zenzo, you should re-make your shirt to sport a "Z" in the middle.
very knowledgeable info sir nice
Thank you for this. The problem is i dont have a blue light.but i am gonna try this. Tyey are picking on the beautiful peacock i just bought and now He is hiding all day and not eating with the group.
Great video brother.
Great information
Great video!!
I found that my fish
Get more rest if I do not have the lights on at night. I can see where they have Settled to the bottom of the tank .
That is just me of what I do.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I found it very informative and a lot of useful info. These same practices can be used on lots of other aggressive fish besides chiclids as well. ☺️ I've had to put a gourami in "time out" for a day or two because he was so mean to the other fish. And surprisingly, it worked!!! HaHa
I've been contemplating on starting my own African Chiclid tank but I've been afraid to because it's hard to find a lot of chiclids at one time to add. I've been worried about adding more fish later because of the aggression. I certainly feel more confident now. Maybe I'll move my Angels out of the 46 gallon to make room for them. LOL
How many African chiclids would you recommend for a 46 gallon bow front with one or two HOB filters? And since this specific tank has been running since 1998, should I leave the existing Amazon Sword in there or change all of the substrate to sand? I've had ram chiclids in there in the past and didn't have any problems with them and the Eco Complete. I'm not well versed in African Chiclids but I'm excited to learn.
Thank you again for all the great videos. I've shared them with my family and some friends' children who are getting into the hobby. One girl, who is 14 y/o was so excited to show me her tank. She had three Oscars in a 10 gallon!!! 🙉🙈 That's not the case anymore though. LOL
I'm sorry this was so long. Again, I appreciate everything. I especially appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experiences as well.
I hope you have a great day! ☀️🌴
I would only recommend Mbuna in a 46, and I would do around 8 with two HOBs. Lots of rock work and caves for hiding. They will destroy your plants though.
Getting ready to put some clowns into my cichlid tank to help me with the snail problem. Good timing for this video. Do mostly the same stuff
Suggestion at the end your videos... end off giving tips on how to get huge biceps like those Lol
Hey Zenzo any advice on introducing females into a male established tank?
same as adding other cichlids, but also pull the males out before introducing the females back.
What kind of light in your top left tank? Crazy bright 💪🏼 need one of those on my 300
Fluval Marine LED (for saltwater/reef).
How many fish in your 75g love the videos by the way I just set up 75g myself I have 30 juveniles in won’t be putting in anymore
I think I have around 20-21
Hello. Great video. I have some African cichlid since last 6 months in a tank. I have brought new African cichlid today. Now I want to add my old and new cichlid into a new bigger tank. How can I do it? New cichlid is around 2inches and older ones are around 5inches.
Set up the new tank with the filter and equipment from the old tank so that RUclips beneficial bacteria in the new tank. Add the new fish and let them be in there for an hour or so. Then, add the older fish. Leave the lights off for the first day or so…even cover the tank with a towel to keep it dark.
@@TazawaTanks Thank you soo much. I am running the new tank without fishes since last 1 month. I have done water changes and also added some filter media from older tank into it. I did this to built enough beneficial bacteria population.
One more question, can I keep Nerite snails in African cichlid tank ?
@@WeLoveGardening. It depends on the cichlids. Larger ones may try to eat the snails. I’ve done well with keeping them with my dwarf mbuna.
@@TazawaTanks I have peacock cichlid , banana cichlid and rest of their names I dont know as in my city there are called by some local names .But all of them are African cichlid for sure.
Great video. What kind of filters you use for your Peacocks Aquarium? Also the black pump inside your tank what does it do keeps the water clean?
I have a sump, a canister and an HOB for filtration. The water mover on the glass is just for circulation.
@@TazawaTanks Okay. Question I have 2 Hang on the back filters I feel like I need to add something else would you prefer a Sponge filter or UV Sterilizer?
I would choose a sponge over the UV.
@@TazawaTanks Okay thank you
@@TazawaTanks What sponge is great for my 75 Gallon Aquarium?
Great video! What light bar do you have and what would you recommend for a 72" long tank?
I have a Fluval Marine LED on this tank. For a 72” tank, I would choose two 36” lights. That way, if one breaks, you only have to replace a smaller light.
Thanks for this video. Would you recommend to use the same strategy if adding new, young cichlids into a group of already established young cichlids? Less than 6 months old.
Wondering three same? Did you ever get an answer to your question?
i cant find a fake hanging plant. i don’t think i’ve seen it in stores
Great advice. One thing to remember fish can't think like humans. Matter of fact , no animal can. They never think hey this and hey that or question this or that. it's just instinct.
is it a good idea to purchase a "family" pack of 12 or 25 assorted African cichlids and put them in the tank all at once?...I lost about 6 fish over the weekend, they big 4 inch ones...only 1 left, my water levels were fine, I added 3 new ones, 1 inch each on Friday and when I woke up Saturday one of my big albino and the bumblebee were dead, took them out and removed the other 2 albino and orange zebra to a smaller tank...2 hours later checked the smaller tank...they were dead too...don't know if too much stress ..they all had been fighting each other since I had put those little cichlids in...I currently have 1 cobalt blue zebra barely hanging in there, 2 electric blues and I think 1 bumblebee left....im debating weather to move them or take them back to the store and just start with all little ones from the same tank and same species..like maybe 6 mbuna yellow electric or should I go with the assorted family pack? this has been a lot harder than I thought...mostly because I have no idea what I am doing...thanks
There are a couple of issues. One issue is that when you add fish one at a time, it makes the new one a target. Try adding 5 at one time, and do it after rearranging the tank and doing a water change. Also, some of your mbuna are very aggressive and may always attack newcomers.
I went from taking care of something simple to a damn Oscar
I have no regrets about it
Except the prices for a bigger tank
This could be a little more challenging depending on your scape but taking out menace fish then putting back in after introducing new fish sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. Cichlids are pretty smart like that. No matter what you do they seem to know. I have some that I move from tank to tank and immediately take over.
Can I add 2.5 inch fishes to an established tank with 3.5 inch ones ?
Should be okay if you follow the guidelines.
Great info. I have a question though, I thought with the majority of cihclids you want to stay away from ones that look similar to each other. You have a lot of blue ones that look pretty close to each other is that not a problem?
It has not been a problem for me. They all equally get picked on! Haha!
Tazawa Tanks 😂
The black one is getting the most.. he is a nice fish tho..
Good video. Mine get stirred up like the footage of what you showed as your refilling almost every time I do a water change. Nothing gets moved or anything, just a water change. What would be the reason for this?
Temperature changes, even if just a degree or two, can get them fired up.
@@TazawaTanks Ok. Thanks. I keep my tank at 80 and usually add water that's at 78 on the backfill.
Cooler water sometimes makes them think that it just rained. This triggers spawning behavior. The males will sometimes fight when this happens.
Do u find u need to change the environment on a regular basis even if u haven’t added any new fish?
No. Only when I’m adding fish into the tank. Once they have an established hierarchy, they are okay.
Definitely GOTTA ask if anyone's got time to help??? So quickly.... I have two Canister Filters Fluval 407's two sponge filters and two wave maker's.... Trying to make SURE that I have my intake and outakes pointing right way?? Does ANYONE have them both on ONE side or left and right but pointing which way? Right now I have mine both of each side with wave maker's one up top for surface agitation and other on other side 90 degree angle pointing at other one but I'm more focused on getting these intake and outake pointing the riiight way?? Get that circular motion!! Thanks in advance for anyone watching and willing to reply!
It sounds like what you have is just fine as far as water movement. I wouldn't stress about the direction of the flow based on what you shared. As long as fish are fighting against a current or getting bushed around by the water, it should be fine.
@@TazawaTanks Only thing that worries me is now in finding my Lemon Jake, Z-Rock, Red Empress etc all finding there way up top left corner and trying to avoid the current (which makes them nip a little bit at each other) so not sure if that's stressing them out and should only have ONE wave maker on for surface agitation 🤔
I’m guessing that they may be up there due to a tank bully. If it’s current, that’s easy to fix.
@@TazawaTanks Well I think both things.... I have a bully yes..... A Orange/Sunshine Peacock Hybrid CAN'T figure out what he is etc.... I've just moved around the outakes from pushing against each other and moved the wave maker at the bottom to more of a straight position instead of having the one for surface agitation and other one 90 degree angle pointing at the top and we shall see.... Any other suggestions? SHOULD I truly have both the intake and outakes on each side, since I have wave maker's and it's only a 60 with two 407's? I'm over filtering on purpose to upgrade my tank but also calm down that aggression I had prior to the wave maker's? I'm not sure where you keep all of yours at?
Hey mate would love to see a video on how to sex African cichlids and peacocks in particular. Ive been filming the progress of a single female peacock holding, spitting and developing the fry week by week and have to say I've got the cichlid bug now Haha. Cheers mate.
I notice some are you fish are “flashing” is this common behavior in cichlids??
Yes, it is common. Mine have done this for years. Often it’s after a water change.
My pink convict cichlids started doing after my water change Sunday which is when I do it every week and I thought maybe I had got a parasite :/
Tazawa Tanks thank you for your reply I follow and like many of your videos very good info
What about when first stocking your tank? Can you buy them at separate times or should you save up and buy them all at once?
I would add 5-6 at a time over a period of a few weeks.
Tazawa Tanks awesome thanks for the advice!
Well I’m trying this.. but they are almost killing each other as fast as I am putting them in. Any advice?
boostdrifts It’s never easy. Try taking them all out, moving the decor around, and adding in the new fish first. Do this every time you add a group. Make sure they are the same size as well. Even with this, it can be tough. Good luck!
It worked. Thanks to you I have a beautiful happy tank. Thanks so much Enzo!
👌
What do you do with a aggressive male that’s is beating up his females in a breeding setup
I’ll pull him out and try a different male.
Tazawa Tanks I only had one breeding size male
Great tips, thanks man. My fish freak out with the blue light.
