    Great tip to stay on the hop-on bus if you like your guide! We stayed the entire loop with Stan in NYC, and Stan was not having a good day, but he was SO FUNNY and so positive about it, his humour was awesome! We had some very rude tourists on our trip, and they could have ruined the whole day, but Stan not only wrangled them, but at the end, he encouraged us that if we were unhappy with the tour, to make sure we aimed our complaints to Blond Stan, because he'd hate brown haired Stan to get fired over anything he had said in the heat of the moment! Hilarious! I stayed on that bus the whole loop, past every fountain in NYC no matter how much I needed to get off to pee lol. A good tour guide will make your day!

    My husband and I have never gone on a big group Europe tour. We go on our own and do what we want when we want. We have been to Europe 3 times now and just love it. If we want to see something special that is farther away then we go on single day small group tours. From Paris in 2017 we did a full day tour to Mont Ste. Michel, absolutely amazing! There were only 8 tourist plus the guide. It was fantastic!
    I do most of the planning for our trips, with hubby's input, and I find that doing all the research, finding that our of the way hotel, restaurants, unique hopping shops etc. is just as fun as going on the trip itself!! We are now planning a 3 month Eurail trip in Europe for the start of our retirement. We have never travelled fully by train before so it will be fun. And no we are not taking big suitcases, we are light travellers, we each now have a 36 litre rolling backpack and a good sized sling bag, we pack for 1 week. :)

I am hoping all people to have a chance to travel to at least 2 countries (one traditional and one a unconventional destination) before their 30s, in order to understand what is going on in the world and not get fooled by Media! Traveling is most important weapon against any sort of hate!

      One of our great authors said the same thing:
      “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely in these accounts.” - Mark Twain
      I like your point about unconventional destinations. Rick alludes to this now and then, but the reason he promotes Europe is because for most of us USAers it’s the easiest form of travel abroad. Once you’ve done a couple trips to England and Germany, maybe you’ll feel more comfortable with the idea of visiting Singapore or Costa Rica.

  • @GlobetrotterGranny

    I agree with Rick about not worrying about the cost of gas when renting a car in Europe. We were in the UK in August 2022 and the price of gas was pretty high compared to what I was used to in the States and the fuel efficiency of the car made driving a pleasure. Super economical and distances were nothing compared to being in the States. Loved driving in the UK and Iceland.

    I had the nice honour of meeting Rick Steves twice in another tourist city (San Francisco) no, not in Europe proper, and used to watch his programmes on PBS until I decided to quit watching American TV altogether in general. He really KNOWS his stuff! Actually I am from Europe, Switzerland living in the City by the Bay for the moment. I have even suggested to many tourists to who I have encountered here of nice interesting places off the beaten path as an alternative to visit, to visit that are cheap and even free! A walk under the Golden Gate Bridge at the old Spanish Fort as well of course walking across the bridge as well. The observation tower at M H DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park is also free (44 m high) and worth it.

      Have you been to the Musée Mécanique yet? It used to be at the Cliff House but now it is in Fisherman's Wharf (near Boudin Bakery). Admission is free but if you play with the old arcade games, you're going to need quarters. Very fascinating and nostalgic for the old days. I think most of the collection is from the old Playland at the Beach that closed in the 1960s. I always recommend this site to anyone who comes to visit SF.

    In Europe, we have 5-8 weeks of paid vacation per year. Everyone who can afford it will go on vacation. People with children have no choice but to go on vacation during school breaks. Exactly those weeks are the most expensive times of the year. Like Rick says: Avoid southern Europe in summer. That's the time when the sun-starved norther Europeans all queue on the highways to get to Italy, Croatia, Greece, Spain, France ... you name it.

      So when is the best time to go? Winter? Fall?

    • @Magic_beans_
      @Magic_beans_ Год назад +1

      @@jtlegionnaire6310Depends on what you want, like if you want sunny beaches, summer is it. If you want to see German Christmas markets then of course you’re going in November-December. Also depends on your constraints; if you have kids in school, you’re limited to the same breaks as everyone else with kids.
      If you don’t have any particular preference, the “shoulder seasons” (May-June and September-October) are a good value. Basically everything is open and it won’t be as crowded or expensive as it is when the kids get out of school.
      Winter travel is generally cheapest and the crowds are way smaller, but there may be fewer flights to choose from and tourist services may be closed or working reduced hours*. Depending on where you’re from and where you go, the weather may be just as cold there as it is back home.
      * Likewise, in Germany I’ve found that from May to October you can easily get day tours in German or English, but in the off-season those same tours were only available in German.

    While my traveling days are over, I find pleasure in following your deeply knowledgeable tours on my I-phone.
    Much has changed, but the need to be prepared through learning something about a place on your bucket list has grown greater.
    I remember in Venice a friend had recommended-instead of the Gritti Palace or the Danieli- a little hotel on a square. Italians are the world’s best hosts, and we probably paid for the trip with our savings.
    Our worst gyp was the Woods Hole ferry to Nantucket. Whenever the Clintons or Obamas are there, you have to leave your car in a lot on the mainland. not cheap. On the island you have to hire taxis for everything.
    The #1 place not to visit in my estimation is Cannes.

    1:40:00 (Converting from metric) - I find it also helps to have a couple of benchmarks. For example, 5 km is about an hour’s brisk walking and 100 km/h is freeway speed. At least for me, under 10°C is bit chilly and over 30° is pretty hot. That allows me to make casual estimates without doing the math.

    Does anyone know if Rick Steves prefers Pompeii or Herculatum if he could only pick one?

    • @lynnyfee
      @lynnyfee 6 лет назад +9

      I don't know sorry. But in my experience it depends on what you're interests are.
      Herculaneum is much smaller (they can't excavate more because there's a modern town build on top of a big part of the city). Therefore it's cheaper and it can be visited in half a day. The architecture and statues are conserved better. There's even wood that has been conserved all this time.
      Pompeii on the other hand is more touristy and therefore more expensive and crowded. There's enough to see for two whole days.
      The frescos are beautiful, you don't have that in Herculaneum. But most frescos and mosaics have been taken down. The ones you see in Pompeii are all copies.
      In my opinion the best solution is visiting Herculaneum in half a day and the other half you could spend in the city of Naples (just half an hour away by train). There you have the museum of archeology with the original frescos and mosaics of Pompeii.
      And have a delicious pizza aftewards; Naples is the place where pizzas originate from ;).
      Hope that helps!

    hi rick! you should tell your audiences about the eurail train ticket for europe! it's a really great deal :-)

    • @tubularap
      @tubularap 4 года назад +3

      Rick did address the eurorail ticket. He said that that ticket used to be a good value, because valid for all trains. Nowadays there is more variety in types of train (ordinary, bullit, etc) with their own pricing, and more restrictions for the general ticket. Rick said to study the options for each different itinerary.
      If you have updated info on eurorail, please share here.

    Good talk, but I wouldn’t consider what he is talking about as vacations. If I am going on a real holiday (sorry vacation) I pack what I need to enjoy myself. Smart clothes for the restaurants, swim gear and beach towel for the beach/pool, etc. And I’m a man! For me a vacation isn’t a vacation if you are stressing about packing like an SAS soldier! I guess you gotta decide. “am I wanting to be a true (rough around the edges) traveller”, or “am I wanting a nice holiday/vacation. I think you can often get a good balance between the two. But for me, being in the military, I get sick of packing protocols! A vacation is supposed to be stress free. I will pack what I bloody well want in order to have a good time! 😃

    The one thing that I hope it comes through for tourists is that one needs to be curious and research the culture of the destination and respect it. Do not go somewhere and eat/act/expect the same thing as in USA. Learn & respect the way of the land and you will have way better time.

      In Canada, when we switched to the metric system, there were some good jingles in tv ads: 20 gives you 30, 30 gives you 50, 50 gives you 80, etc. The whole world is on metric and it is very straightforward. Even the English have given up on the old Imperial measures.

    Worried about foreign ATMs eating your card, or charging thousands? Get and use a DEBIT card ... it has on it only the money that you pre-load it with, and if you do internet banking you can re-load it as you go. P.S., your cards will work only in ATMs that participate in your group of cards, so check to see which group your card belongs to.
